JOHN MOLLOY, 85 Tractor-trailer operator for U.S. Postal Service Tuesday, September 20, 2005 By ANDREA BOYARSKY ADVANCE STAFF WRITER John J. Molloy Sr., 85, of Dongan Hills, a U.S. Army veteran and retired postal worker, died yesterday in the Carmel Richmond Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center, Dongan Hills, where he lived for the past year. Born on Jan. 27, 1920, in Manhattan, Mr. Molloy was reared in the Mission of the Immaculate Virgin, Mount Loretto, orphanage in Pleasant Plains. He lived there until he was 17 and had fond memories of his childhood, including working on the farm and milking cows, his family said. He was an excellent athlete who excelled in baseball and football growing up, they said. After graduating from high school at Mount Loretto, Mr. Molloy served in the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in California and Nevada. During the Great Depression, the program provided work and vocational training for unemployed, single young men through conserving and developing the country's natural resources. When he was about 19 years old, Mr. Molloy joined the U.S. Army and served almost five years as a private first class during World War II. He was a part of many battles, including those at Anzio Beach in Italy, Central Europe, the Rhineland and Tunisia. He was also part of the Army's occupation of Germany. WAR HERO Mr. Molloy earned many medals and commendations during the war, including two Bronze Stars. "My father was extremely humble and never discussed his World War II experiences," said his daughter, Dianne M. Powers. In fact, she said, it was only when he could not travel to Washington, D.C., for the World War II Memorial dedication in 2004 because of ill health that he told his family of the letters and citations he received from various generals during the war. Mr. Molloy also received a commendation from Rep. Vito Fossella (R-Staten Island/Brooklyn), recognizing his contributions to the war and to his country. "He truly was the epitome of the 'greatest generation,'" added his son-in-law, Frank H. Powers. After the war ended, Mr. Molloy married his childhood sweetheart, the former Josephine Zarba, on Nov. 11, 1945. The couple resided in Queens for about five years before moving to Manhattan. In 1968, they moved to New Springville, followed by Graniteville, Huguenot and Concord, before settling in Dongan Hills 10 years ago. "He was a truly devoted husband for over 60 years," said his wife. For about 20 years, Mr. Molloy worked as a tractor-trailer operator for the Postal Service, driving throughout New York state. After leaving the Postal Service, he continued to drive a tractor-trailer for various companies, retiring around 1975. DRIVING TALENT His family and co-workers said the contrast between the 5-foot-7-inch Mr. Molloy and the enormous rigs he so ably drove, dispatched and parked was striking. A family man with a great sense of humor, Mr. Molloy enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. "My dad and I always had a unique bond," said his son Stephen. "He always called me Butch, which he said means, 'I love you.'" Mr. Molloy also enjoyed playing handball and billiards, watching television and listening to music. According to his family, he also holds the record for watching "The Godfather" movie for 737 consecutive days. Mr. Molloy enjoyed the movie because it featured his former orphanage. LOVED TO DANCE He was well known on Staten Island for his dancing skills and was nicknamed Twinkle Toes by his friends and family. Mr. Molloy also loved animals, especially his dogs, and would keep pictures of them in his wallet. He always kept a dog as a companion since his Army days, the family said. Mr. Molloy was well-known to his neighbors for his daily routine of taking long walks with his Portuguese Water Dog , Boot, tipping his hat like a gentleman to passersby and buying lottery tickets. According to his grandchildren, Doug, Brian and J., he used to tell them that "you're not here for a long time, but we're all here for a good time," and he always proved the truth of that remark. Mr. Molloy and his wife volunteered at Staten Island Academy, the Staten Island Institute of Arts and Sciences and the auxiliary of St. Vincent's Hospital. In addition to his wife, Josephine, his son Stephen, his daughter, Dianne, and three grandchildren, Mr. Molloy is survived by his son John Jr.; a brother, James Conroy; six more grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
