VIVIAN PATTERSON, 87 Lived in the same South Beach home since she was 3 Thursday, September 22, 2005 Vivian Patterson, 87, of South Beach, a homemaker, bank employee and hospital volunteer who loved to travel, died Monday in St. Vincent's Hospital, West Brighton. Born Vivian Scelza in Manhattan's Greenwich Village, she moved with her family to a house on McClean Avenue in South Beach when she was 3 years old -- and resided there for the rest of her life. "She lived on McClean Avenue when it was a dirt road," noted her daughter, Lynne Kramer. A graduate of Curtis High School, she met U.S. Army infantryman John W. Patterson while he was stationed in nearby Fort Wadsworth, and the couple married in October 1940. Mr. Patterson, who served in World War II and became a house painter upon his return home, died in 1973, after 32 years of marriage. A homemaker who helped rear three children, Mrs. Patterson also worked for the former First Boston Corp. investment bank from 1971 to 1988 in an office located at the World Trade Center, Manhattan. She was in charge of posting the daily NASDAQ stock market figures for the company. Prior to last year, Mrs. Patterson was a 17-year member of the Ladies Auxiliary of St. Vincent's Hospital. She also belonged to the Walking Society, whose members have strolled through dozens of Staten Island neighborhoods, along with parts of the other boroughs. Mrs. Patterson also was a member of the "Over the Hill Gang," a local senior citizens group. Aside from her family, her greatest loves were traveling and her garden. Her destinations included China, Japan, Tahiti, Europe and Alaska. And, in August 2001, she took about eight family members on a two-week Mediterranean cruise. "We went to France, Italy, Turkey and Greece. It was great," said Ms. Kramer. "My mother loved traveling ... she loved to see all the different places, eat all the different foods and meet all the different people. She found it exciting." When she did stay home, Mrs. Patterson often could be found tending her backyard garden. "My mother got more vegetables out of her garden than you can imagine," chuckled her daughter, noting that her mother grew zucchini, peppers, corn and grapes, along with flowers -- such as roses. She was also a longtime reader of the Staten Island Advance. In addition to her daughter Lynne, Mrs. Patterson is survived by her daughter, Hollace Malinchak; her son, Wesley; four grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. The funeral will be Saturday from the A. Azzara Funeral Home with a mass at 9:30 a.m. in Holy Rosary R.C. Church, both South Beach. Burial will follow in Ocean View Cemetery, Oakwood. ROSE ANN RUSSO, 79 Greatest talent was being the anchor of her family Thursday, September 22, 2005 Longtime Staten Islander Rose Ann (Tootsie) Russo, 79, of Rosebank, a homemaker and community volunteer who won an award for her baking, died of cancer yesterday in Staten Island University Hospital, Ocean Breeze. Mrs. Russo took second prize in the 1988 Richmond County Fair baking competition, according to her family -- who said her specialties included Italian cheesecake and zeppoles. While her skill in the kitchen was great, Mrs. Russo's children and grandchildren said her greatest talent lay in being the family's anchor. She lived in Rosebank for over 50 years and was the center of the family, said her granddaughter, Roxann Fox. She was always bringing the family together for the holidays and Sunday dinners. The former Rose Ann Randazzo was born in Upper Manhattan and worked as a seamstress in a glove factory in her native borough. In 1949, she and Frank Russo were married and the couple moved to South Beach. They settled in Rosebank the following year. Mrs. Russo was active with the PS 13 PTA, when her children attended the school, and was a longtime member of the Mount Carmel Society -- each year working as a volunteer for the society's feast. Many never got the chance to know her more mischievous side, but her grandchildren will never forget it, said her granddaughter, Nicole Russo. The family knows they will not be able to convey what she meant and will continue to mean to them but wanted to share part of her life anyway. Mrs. Russo was a parishioner of St. Joseph's R.C. Church, Rosebank. Her husband of 35 years, Frank Sr., died in 1984. In addition to her two granddaughters, surviving are her son, Frank Jr.; her three daughters, Rosann Fox, Joann Koncelik and Barbara Russo; a brother, Sonny Randazzo; two more grandchildren, and a great-grandson. Mrs. Russo's son, John, died in 1964. The funeral will be Saturday from the A. Azzara Funeral Home, South Beach, with a mass at 9:30 a.m. in St. Joseph's Church. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Grasmere. ROBERT STRUTHERS, 95 Was supervisor, director at Brooklyn Navy Yard Thursday, September 22, 2005 Robert L. Struthers, 95, a longtime Staten Islander and former shipyard director and Realtor, died Tuesday at his home in Sunnyside. The native of Union, N.J., graduated from a New Jersey high school before serving with the U.S. Navy in the late 1920s. He moved to West Brighton in 1946, to New Dorp in 1960 and relocated Fort Lauderdale, Fla., in 1981 before returning to the Island, settling in Sunnyside 10 years ago. During his 35-year career at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, Mr. Struthers was a personnel supervisor and a director of the shipyard's pipe-fitting department. After retiring from the Brooklyn Navy Yard, he worked for nine years for the city Department of Environmental Protection in Queens, performing chemical analyses to check for water contamination. While living in Fort Lauderdale, Mr. Struthers worked as a Realtor with Abcco Realty, along with his wife. He stopped working at the age of 85. Mr. Struthers met his wife-to-be, the former Margaret Hayes, on a midnight New York City harbor cruise in the mid-1940s. The couple wed 57 years ago. A "life member" of the Beacon Light Masonic Lodge, Mr. Struthers was proud of his 60 years of service as a Mason, his family said. He enjoyed reading, especially biographies and the poetry of Walt Whitman, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and fellow Scotsman Robert Burns. He also loved nature -- especially the ocean, and liked to swim in Fort Lauderdale. But Mr. Struthers most loved spending time with his family, said his daughter, Fern Nicolaisen. The Strutherses were early members of the Great Kills Swim Club, and often went camping together. Mrs. Nicolaisen remembers walking with her father to the New Dorp Public Library, where they picked out books together, and said her father passed a spiritual sensibility along to his children. "He was a mentor and a true hero to his children," she added. "His positive attitude and sense of humor would ease the strain of everyday conflicts. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him -- he was a wonderful, kind, terrific man with a tremendous spirit for life." In addition to his wife, Margaret, and his daughter Fern, Mr. Struthers is survived by his son, Bruce W.; his daughter, Margaret P. Boje; six grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. The funeral service will be Saturday at 10 a.m. in the Matthew Funeral Home, Willowbrook. The Rev. Richard Lohmeyer, pastor of St. John's Lutheran Church in Port Richmond, will officiate. Burial will follow in Moravian Cemetery, New Dorp.
