NICKOLAY RADCHENKO, 48 Accidentally crushed to death by truck in Brooklyn Friday, September 23, 2005 By HEIDI J. SHRAGER ADVANCE STAFF WRITER A Sunnyside man who emigrated here from Russia was accidentally crushed to death by a truck in front of his former Brooklyn workplace on Tuesday. Nickolay K. Radchenko was a 48-year-old father who held jobs as an engineer, computer network specialist and shipping manager. Born in a large city nestled in the Ural Mountains of eastern Russia, he was brought to the Ukrainian capital of Kiev as a boy. Advertisement In 1980, Mr. Radchenko married the former Lidia S. Volochay, whose best friend had been dating -- and eventually married -- Mr. Radchenko's best friend. After earning a degree from Kiev Polytechnic Institute, Mr. Radchenko worked as an engineer in Russia. In 1986, he brought his wife and children to Jersey City, N.J. The family relocated to the Canarsie section of Brooklyn in 1990. In 2002, he bought a home in Sunnyside, passing a milestone he had strived for his entire adult life. "He worked his whole life to buy a house," said his daughter, Halina N. Radchenko. "It was the happiest day of his life." Once in New York, Mr. Radchenko briefly indulged his entrepreneurial spirit. He opened an auto repair shop in Queens and sold it a few years later. Then he bought a share of a leather fashion business his friends started, and soon sold that as well. In 1989, he became a manager for the former Perma-Steel, a Brooklyn shipping company. About 10 years later, he earned a computer degree from the Manhattan campus of the Chubb Institute. He then became a network specialist for Time Warner Cable on Staten Island. In 2001, he was laid off, and spent the next few years doing freelance construction work. Six months ago, Mr. Radchenko began delivering tile for Merola Co., a Brooklyn-based tile manufacturing and shipping company. He was killed Tuesday when a company truck driver accidentally ran him over. Police issued no summonses or arrests. Although he had stopped working, his daughter said he was there to talk about returning to work. Calling her father an "incredibly well-rounded man," Ms. Radchenko said he cultivated an array of passions and skills, from literature to cooking to carpentry. Mr. Radchenko spent days renovating his Sunnyside house, retiling rooms, finishing the basement and garage, laying a stone patio and growing a lush garden in the backyard. "He did everything by hand," his daughter said. "That's what made him happy." Surrounding himself with family and friends was another of his favorite pastimes, she added. An amateur gourmet chef who loved to prepare seafood feasts, Mr. Radchenko hosted countless dinner parties, whiling away the evening hours talking about art and books with friends and family. Ms. Radchenko said her well-read father was always trying to get her to read the classics -- Mark Twain, Ernest Hemingway or "some very famous Russian author." "He knew so much poetry right off the top of his head," she said. "He was an amazing man. Everything I have become is because of my father." Ms. Radchenko was speaking literally. Her father sent her to college, making the 24-year-old the first in the family to graduate from college in America. Then he sent her to law school -- she is now in her second year at the School of Law at St. Mary's University in San Antonio, Texas. "I only have my father to thank," she said. "It's so empty without him. He brought so much life into our house." In addition to his daughter, Halina, and his wife, Lidia, Mr. Radchenko is survived by his son, Steven N.; his brother, Andrew, and his parents, Maria and Konstantin Radchenko. The funeral will be tomorrow from the Meislohn-Silvie Funeral Home, Port Richmond, with a mass at 10 a.m. in St. Andrew Ukrainian Orthodox Memorial Church, South Bound Brook, N.J. Burial will follow in St. Andrew Ukrainian Orthodox Memorial Cemetery, also South Bound Brook. MICHAEL BORGOGNONI, 81 Apparel industry worker sewed coats for daughters Friday, September 23, 2005 Michael Borgognoni, a World War II veteran and former garment manufacturer, died Wednesday at his Westerleigh home. He was 81. A native of Manhattan, he was brought to Brooklyn as a child and was a member of the first graduating class of the former Central Needle Trades High School, Manhattan. After graduating, Mr. Borgognoni corresponded with his mentor there, Ben Coppersmith, for more than six decades. Mr. Borgognoni served as a staff sergeant in China with the U.S. Marine Corps from 1943 to 1946. In 1947, he married the former Frances Marsala, whom he had met in Bensonhurst as a teen-ager. The couple moved to Meiers Corners in 1971 and settled in Westerleigh in 1980. For 55 years, Mr. Borgognoni was a garment manufacturer for various apparel companies. He was vice president of manufacturing at the former C.D. Sportswear in Scranton, Pa., for 20 years, and most recently was a consultant to garment companies in Manhattan. His work fashioning fine men's suits took him to Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, France and Italy, often for months at a time. He retired last year. As a young man, Mr. Borgognoni was a member of a bowling team in Brooklyn. While living on Staten Island, he was a parishioner of St. Rita's R.C. Church, Meiers Corners. Mr. Borgognoni enjoyed sewing -- You name it, he could make it, said his daughter, Michele Salemi. He made curtains and upholstered furniture, and sewed coats and dresses for his daughters. When his daughters were young, he enjoyed family trips to parks or the beach at Coney Island, Brooklyn. More recently, he enjoyed dining and attending the theater in Manhattan. My father taught me patience and perseverance, said Mrs. Salemi. He also attended all of his grandchildren's sporting events -- he watched his granddaughter, Meghan, play softball, and his grandsons, Michael and Christopher, play basketball. I'll remember my father for his strength, his spirit and his grace, said Mrs. Salemi. He always smiled and always found a reason for laughter -- even during his illness. He really was quite remarkable. In addition to his wife of 58 years, Frances; his daughter Michele, and his three grandchildren, Mr. Borgognoni is survived by his daughter, Lorraine Griffin, and a sister, Julia Sollazzi. The funeral will be Monday from the Matthew Funeral Home, Willowbrook, with a mass at 10 a.m. in St. Rita's Church. Burial will follow in Moravian Cemetery, New Dorp. JOSEPH TREMBONE, 36 NYPD officer cherished time with his 4 daughters Friday, September 23, 2005 Lifelong West Brighton resident Joseph Trembone, 36, a retired police officer, died yesterday in Staten Island University Hospital, Ocean Breeze, after battling esophageal cancer for almost two years. "He was just full of life," said his wife of 11 years, the 2004 former Maria Tritto. "He cherished life and his family. He will be deeply missed." Last December, friends and family gathered at the Renaissance in Grant City to raise money for Mr. Trembone's medical bills, and a total of $45,000 was realized. He graduated from Susan Wagner High School and attended John Jay College of Criminal Justice, Manhattan, for a year. He joined the NYPD in 1989, working at the 122nd Precinct in New Dorp for eight years. A former boxer with the Patrolmen's Benevolent Association, Mr. Trembone was a Golden Gloves champ in New Jersey. He also loved the New York Yankees and making trips to Atlantic City. When he retired from the police force, Mr. Trembone spent almost every waking minute with his children. He was a parishioner of Sacred Heart R.C. Church, West Brighton. In addition to his wife, Maria, Mr. Trembone is survived by his four daughters, Arianna, Alexa, Sabrina and Isabella Trembone; his parents, Patricia and Joseph Trembone; a brother, Michael; a sister, Allyson Trembone, and his paternal grandmother, Anna Trembone. The funeral will be Monday from the Casey Funeral Home, Castleton Corners, with a mass at 10 a.m. in Sacred Heart Church. Burial will follow in Resurrection Cemetery, Pleasant Plains. DIANA CHIN, 44 H&R Block tax preparer had a passion for teaching Friday, September 23, 2005 Diana Rosemarie Chin, 44, of Elm Park, a homemaker and former tax preparer, died Sept. 14. in St. Vincent's Hospital, West Brighton. The former Diana Rosemarie Lyne was born and reared in Trelawny, Jamaica, and immigrated to Soundview, the Bronx, in 1995. She moved to Elm Park six years ago. While in Jamaica, Mrs. Chin graduated from Westwood High School in St. Ann, and later earned her bachelor's degree in management studies from the University of the West Indies at Mona. Mrs. Chin worked as a tax preparer for H&R Block both on Staten Island and in the Bronx. She stopped working in 2001, when she took up the role of homemaker. She was a member of the International Christian Center in Graniteville, and with a passion for teaching children, she volunteered in the center's nursery -- where she read stories and taught songs about the Bible. Mrs. Chin was an avid reader and educator who enjoyed studying languages, dancing, singing, cooking, in-line skating and listening to music. Surviving are her husband of 14 years, Neville; her parents, Wesley and Doris Lyne; four sons, Paul-Anthony, Matthew, Stephen and John-Michael; two brothers, Windell and Leroy Lyne, and four sisters, Barbara and Yvonne Lyne, Pauline Liman and Veronica Lumsden. The funeral will be tomorrow from the Stradford Funeral Home, Tompkinsville, with a service at 10.30 a.m. in International Christian Center. Burial will be in Silver Mount Cemetery, Silver Lake. BARTOLOMEO TARANTO, 83 Life of Navy veteran, builder centered on his family Friday, September 23, 2005 Bartolomeo V. Taranto, 83, of Tottenville, a builder and contractor on Staten Island for more than a half-century, died of kidney failure yesterday in Staten Island University Hospital, Prince's Bay. In 1953, he founded Taranto Construction Co. Since then, his family estimates he has been responsible for the construction of more than 2,000 homes on Staten Island. Mr. Taranto's wife, Irene, recalled how her husband started his firm with just $800. "He always worked very hard at building homes that people could afford, and still enjoyed keeping a low profile," she said. "Barney," as he was affectionately known, was responsible for such buildings as Congregation B'nai Israel in Bay Terrace, St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Tottenville, Young Israel of Eltingville, Holy Rosary R.C. Church in South Beach, Gateway Family Life Center in Richmond Valley and St. Thomas the Apostle R.C. Church in Pleasant Plains -- to name a few. In 1994, Mr. Taranto was honored at the third annual Carillon Ball -- a fund-raiser hosted by the St. Joseph-St. Thomas R.C. Parish in Pleasant Plains -- for his construction of so many churches, synagogues, parish schools and child-care facilities around the Island. "It's almost impossible to go into any Staten Island community and not find a home or building constructed by Dad," said his four sons -- Dana, Cris, Brian and Zane -- who now operate the company in Eltingville. "He had a strong interest in Staten Island and its people, and not just in building but in providing jobs as well," said his daughter, Fay McManus. While Mr. Taranto reportedly retired five years ago, leaving the company to his sons, Brian said, "He never really got out of the business, because he was out looking at jobs with me as recently as last week." A native of Red Hook, Brooklyn, Mr. Taranto was brought to Sunnyside at age 8 and attended PS 29 in Castleton Corners and Curtis High School. The family moved to Oakwood in 1955, then lived in Grant City before settling in Tottenville. Mr. Taranto, who always loved carpentry, joined the U.S. Navy in 1943 and soon was assigned to the Seabees, the Navy's construction wing. After World War II, he joined the FDNY, but soon decided to forgo fighting fires in favor of his first love, building. Everything in Mr. Taranto's life centered on his family, and it was rare that the couple could go out for dinner without soon being joined by some or all of his children -- including his daughters, Ann Giordano, Eve Taranto and Gina Afflitto. Mr. Taranto also is survived by 22 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. The Taranto family lives on the last block before the Raritan Bay off Amboy Road, and the patriarch not only built his own home there overlooking the bay, but homes for five of his children, as well. "He enjoyed the view of the harbor from his living room as much as he enjoyed having the family gather in the swimming pool," said his daughter, Eve. In addition to the enjoyment he got from his family and business, Mr. Taranto liked to take an occasional jaunt to the Atlantic City casinos or sojourn at his home in North Miami Beach, Fla. He was also an avid New York Jets football fan and liked nothing better than taking his sons to a game. Mr. Taranto was a member of an Island Veterans of Foreign Wars Post, the Staten Island Elks Club and the Richmond County Country Club. He also is survived by a sister, Theresa Miro. The funeral service will be Monday at 10 a.m. in the Colonial Funeral Home, New Dorp. The Rev. Dr. Gard Rowe, pastor of Oakwood Heights Community Church, will officiate. Burial will follow in Moravian Cemetery, New Dorp.
