O'Donnell, 91, of West Brighton, a former chemical analyst, active 2002 church member and longtime Mariners Harbor resident, died Thursday in St. Vincent's Hospital, West Brighton. Mr. O'Donnell was the son of Marion Christopher O'Donnell, a descendant of Joseph Christopher, a farmer who lived on Staten Island during the American Revolution. Christopher's 18th-century home, known now as the Christopher House and located in Historic Richmond Town, was the meeting place for the Island's Committee of Safety, the local policing agency. Born and reared in Mariners Harbor, Mr. O'Donnell graduated from PS 23 in Richmond at the young age of 11, receiving a medal to commemorate the accomplishment. He graduated from Curtis High School at age 15, earning a place on the school's permanent honor roll, according to his family. Mr. O'Donnell's first job was in the foreign currency department of Chase Bank, Manhattan, where he was employed for five years. He then went to work in the office of the former Bethlehem Steel Shipyard in Mariners Harbor, where his father was a gate guard. Three years later, he began a 38-year career as a chemical analyst with Procter & Gamble at its former Port Ivory plant. He rose to the position of senior chemical analyst before retiring in 1976. He and Dorathy Walter were married on Oct. 15, 1938, in Summerfield United Methodist Church, Mariners Harbor, where the couple met. Mr. O'Donnell was a very dedicated member of the church for more than 50 years -- serving as its longtime treasurer, as a lay speaker and as a Sunday school teacher and superintendent. "If there was something to do at the church, he did it," said his daughter-in-law, Donna O'Donnell. "The church was his life." The couple briefly lived in Westerleigh upon their marriage before moving to Mariners Harbor. They relocated to Jamesburg, N.J., in 1996, before moving in with their youngest son, Daniel, and his wife, Donna, in West Brighton this July. "He was a gentleman's gentleman," said Mrs. O'Donnell of her father-in-law. "He held doors open and never said a bad word about anyone. He was a true Christian." A diehard supporter of the New York Yankees, Mr. O'Donnell was also an avid reader and a fan of the TV game show "Jeopardy!" In addition to his wife of 66 years, Dorathy, and his son Daniel, he is survived by his son Kenneth C.; a sister, Janet Corson; three grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. The funeral service will be Monday at 10 a.m. in the Harmon Home for Funerals, West Brighton. The Rev. Donald Goodson, pastor of Summerfield United Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will follow in Moravian Cemetery, New Dorp. LOUIS DeMARCO, 86 WW II veteran operated a stable in New Springville Saturday, September 24, 2005 Native Staten Islander Louis J.
