Former Meiers Corners man gunned down in California Construction worker enjoyed rap music, dancing Sunday, September 25, 2005 By DOUG AUER and SALLY GOLDENBERG ADVANCE STAFF WRITER A former Staten Islander has been killed in a shooting in Southern California, police said. Jose Murillo, 28, of North Hollywood, Calif., once a resident of Meiers Corners, was pronounced dead at 3:20 a.m. last Sunday in the San Gabriel Valley (Calif.) Medical Center, police said. Murillo was hanging out on the front steps of a friend's San Gabriel residence at approximately 2:07 a.m. on Sept. 18, when an unknown assailant shot him, said Sgt. Kevin Butler, investigation supervisor for the San Gabriel Police Department. Friends rushed him to the hospital in a private vehicle, Butler continued. "It was either a mistaken shooting of the wrong person, a gang shooting or a personal problem," said Butler, adding that the death was ruled a homicide. "We're exploring several theories, but have nothing concrete." The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department is aiding in the investigation, Butler added. Born in Manhattan, Mr. Murillo relocated to North Hollywood, Calif., to live with his grandfather when he was a child, said his aunt, Flora Dufour of Meiers Corners. Mr. Murillo lived sporadically in Meiers Corners with relatives for four years and was a parishioner of St. Rita's R.C. Church, she added. In the week following his death, friends shared stories of Mr. Murillo's protective side, Ms. Dufour said. "We had a lot of friends of his calling regarding his life, how good of a person he was. He used to advise kids to go against the gangs," she said. "Four or five kids calling mentioning that he was always behind them, telling them to go in a straight line (and) don't deviate. "He was such a kind person," she added. Several weeks before being killed, Mr. Murillo started a job at a local construction company, Ms. Dufour said. He also was looking for his own apartment. "It was like, 'Hooray! Not living with Grandpa anymore,'" she joked. "Everything was going well for him." A sports enthusiast, Murillo rooted for New York teams. He also listened to rap music, partied in night clubs and wrote poetry, his aunt said. He is survived by his parents, Maggie Rivero and Jose Murillo Sr.; a brother, Mauricio Cruz; his paternal grandfather, Julio G. Murillo, and his maternal grandfather, Joaquin Rivero. The funeral will be tomorrow from the Meislohn Silvie Funeral Home, Port Richmond, with a mass at 11 a.m. in St. Rita's Church. Burial will follow in St. Peter's Cemetery, West Brighton.
