ROBERT MacFARLANE, 73 Labor Department inspector enjoyed woodworking Wednesday, September 28, 2005 Robert MacFarlane of Monroe, N.Y., a former Staten Islander and retired safety inspector, died Monday in Orange Regional Medical Center, Goshen, N.Y. He was 73. Born in Scotland, he immigrated with his family to the U.S. in 1947 -- moving to Yonkers, N.Y. In 1953, Mr. MacFarlane became a corporal in the U.S Army's 2nd Armored Division, stationed in Germany. In 1954, he moved to Port Richmond, where he met Gail Tedesco, who would become his wife. The couple moved to Dongan Hills in 1957. A carpenter for many years, Mr. MacFarlane became a safety inspector with the New York State Department of Labor in Manhattan in 1962. He worked his way up to program manager in 1978, and helped to set up a testing program to qualify state crane operators. On the licensing board for operators, Mr. MacFarlane was responsible for compressed air tunnels and amusement park safety. After 30 years with the department, he retired in 1988. Mr. MacFarlane and his wife relocated to Monroe in 1995. He was a member of the Diamond Thistle Masonic Lodge in Yonkers and the Island's Kells-Grennie Post, American Legion. An avid gardener, Mr. MacFarlane enjoyed woodworking -- often making furniture for his home. He was a parishioner of Sacred Heart R.C. Church, Monroe. In addition to his wife of 48 years, Gail, surviving Mr. MacFarlane are his two daughters, Donna Minicucci and Susan D'Apuzzo; two sisters, Roseann Johnson and Nan Brooke, and five grandchildren. Vislocky, 53, of Dongan Hills, superintendent of historic Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn, died Sunday in St. Vincent's Hospital, West Brighton. Born in Manhattan, he was brought to Brooklyn as a child. Mr. Vislocky began working at Green-Wood Cemetery 2004 35 years ago, making his way through the ranks to become superintendent of the expansive 478-acre cemetery with four lakes and an inventory of famous and infamous dead. Horace Greeley, the New York Tribune editor who railed against corruption, was buried there in 1872, and Tammany Hall Boss William Tweed was buried in the family plot in 1878, not long after he was released from prison. Mr. Vislocky's family said he knew everything about the scenic burial grounds, and in recent years was involved in the movement to invite the public to Green-Wood for tours, films and even concerts. It's an historic place with lots of magic and monuments. He knew everything about that cemetery, inside and out, said Mr. Vislocky's daughter, Lisa. She said her father, who was constantly exposed to death, loved life and his friends, especially a second family of neighbors on Slater Boulevard in Dongan Hills -- the community to which he moved in 1981. His motto was, Why do tomorrow what you can do today?' My dad had a heart of gold, she added. Mr. Vislocky coached with the Staten Island Little League for several years while his son, Nicholas, played baseball. He also enjoyed golfing, fishing and spending time with friends. In addition to his daughter, Lisa, and son, Nicholas, Mr. Vislocky is survived by his wife of 30 years, the former Marie Hunt. The funeral is scheduled for today from the Colonial Funeral Home, New Dorp, with a mass at 10 a.m. in St. Nicholas Carpatho-Russian Orthodox Greek Catholic Church, Manhattan. Burial will be in Green-Wood Cemetery. JOSEPH McKEON, 46 Island bartender had a passion for music, singing Wednesday, September 28, 2005 Lifelong Staten Islander Joseph McKeon, 46, of Port Richmond, a bartender, died yesterday in St. Vincent's Hospital, West Brighton. Born in New Brighton, Mr. McKeon lived in Westerleigh for 17 years before recently moving to Port Richmond. The graduate of St. Peter's Boys High School attended Pace University in Manhattan. He then began his career as an underwriter for American International Group and the Fireman's Fund, both Manhattan. Mr. McKeon later became a bartender -- beginning at Blaine & Noone's, which later became Forest Avenue's well-known Afternoone's in West Brighton. He then worked at the former Victory Lanes in Castleton Corners. Much loved behind the bar, Mr. McKeon was known as "Joey Cocktails" to his friends and loyal customers. An avid golfer, frequenting all the borough's courses, he was also a diehard New York Yankees fan. Mr. McKeon cultivated his passion for music and was known to "get up and sing" for family and friends. It wasn't unusual for him to belt out "Danny Boy" or tunes by Earth, Wind & Fire, Elton John or Stevie Wonder. "He was just a fun person to be around, quick-witted, happy and always full of life," said his sisters, Kathleen DiMauro and Noreen Brosnan. Mr. McKeon also is survived by his son, James, and his parents, Bridget and Joseph McKeon. The funeral will be Friday from the Harmon Home for Funerals, West Brighton, with a mass at 9:45 a.m. in St. Peter's R.C. Church, New Brighton. Burial will be in St. Peter's Cemetery, West Brighton. She is survived by her two sons, Frank Jr. and Anthony; her daughter, Rosa Migliorini; nine grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. ENRICO ZERILLI, 90 Ironworker enjoyed fishing, bowling and gardening Wednesday, September 28, 2005 Former Staten Islander Enrico (Andy) Zerilli, 90, a retired ironworker, died Monday at his home in Toms River, N.J. Mr. Zerilli was born in Mariners Harbor and lived there most of his life. A graduate of McKee High School, he married Queens native Joan DiFalco in August 1941. The couple briefly lived in South Beach and Port Richmond before moving to Mariners Harbor, where they resided until relocating to Toms River last year. Mr. Zerilli was an ironworker for the former Bethlehem Steel Co. in Mariners Harbor for about 20 years. He was especially proud of working there during World War II and the job he and his fellow co-workers did for the war effort, his family said. He later worked in Manhattan for Local 79, Construction and General Building Laborers union, for another 24 years before retiring in 1977. He was an avid fisherman and bowler, becoming interested in the sport as a youngster working as a pinsetter at Madalone's, the former bowling alley in Tompkinsville. He competed in several men's leagues on the Island, including at the former Colonial Lanes in Clifton and the former Knotty Pine Lanes in Mariners Harbor. Mr. Zerilli also enjoyed playing cards, especially pinochle, and tending his backyard garden. He loved giving away the tomatoes he grew to family and friends in the neighborhood, said his son, Fred, noting that his father was also a terrific cook, mainly Italian food. Mr. Zerilli was a parishioner of St. Maximilian Kolbe R.C. Church in Toms River. In addition to his wife of 64 years, Joan, and his son, Fred, he is survived by his daughter, Joanne Zerilli; three brothers, Salvatore, Frank and Albert; two sisters, Agnes Glorioso and Louise Fanning, and two grandchildren. The funeral will be Saturday from the Quinn-Hopping Funeral Home, Toms River, with a mass at 10:30 a.m. in St. Maximilian Kolbe Church. DR. ROBERT O'CONNOR, 85 World War II veteran was active in the community Wednesday, September 28, 2005 ADVANCE STAFF REPORT Dr. Robert J. O'Connor's passion for science and people turned into a 28-year career as a physician, philanthropist and advocate for patients. On Saturday, the 85-year-old native Staten Islander died in Suburban Mercy Hospital, Norristown, Pa. Born in Stapleton, he lived in Randall Manor for 50 years. In May, he became a resident of Normandy Farms, Blue Bell, Pa. As a freshman at Curtis High School, Dr. O'Connor was encouraged to satisfy his scientific curiosity at the Staten Island Institute of Arts and Sciences (SIIAS) in St. George. The museum attic was the laboratory and meeting place for some of the Island's most well-known scientists and naturalists -- including William T. Davis, Howard Cleaves, Mathilde Weingartner, Charles Leng and Joseph Burke. There, Dr. O'Connor's love of the natural world was given free rein, and he developed a collection of 86 species of mycetozoa, a microscopic mold. Dr. O'Connor went on to serve five terms as chairman of the museum's board of trustees. A 1938 Curtis graduate, he was named to the school's permanent honor roll. He earned his bachelor of science degree cum laude from Wagner College, Grymes Hill, in 1941. WW II VETERAN Dr. O'Connor met his future wife, Olive Errington, when they were children attending Sunday school at First Presbyterian Church of Staten Island in Stapleton. They began dating while he was a Wagner student, and wed before he shipped out with the U.S. Navy in 1942. During World War II, Dr. O'Connor served as a communications officer in the Navy, stationed in the South Pacific aboard the USS Oakland. He later was sent to serve on two British warships in the Pacific before being discharged in 1946 as a lieutenant. In a 2003 Advance profile, he vividly recalled a night during World War II when the Oakland, off the coast of the Philippines, came under a kamikaze attack. He was standing at the stern when a Japanese bomber broke through anti-aircraft fire and dropped a torpedo. He remembered watching the torpedo speed directly at the ship's stern, run under its propellers ... and pass harmlessly out to sea. After the war, Dr. O'Connor returned to school and, in 1947, received his master's degree from Columbia University, Manhattan. He received his medical degree from SUNY Downstate Medical Center, Brooklyn, in 1951. Dr. O'Connor did his internship and residency at the former Staten Island Hospital, Tompkinsville. During his career, he served as its chief of staff and acting director of the obstetrics and gynecology department. He also served as a member of the medical staff's credentials committee and as the credentials liaison between the medical staff and the board of trustees. STATEN ISLAND HOSPITAL Dr. O'Connor completed his residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Women's Hospital Division of St. Luke's Hospital, Manhattan, in 1958. That year, he was appointed a full attending physician in his specialty at Staten Island Hospital, now Staten Island University Hospital, Ocean Breeze. During his time with the hospital, he maintained offices in St. George and later in New Dorp with Dr. Robert Marks as his partner -- performing surgery as well as deliveries. He was board-certified in obstetrics and gynecology in 1968. As a doctor, you gain something from practicing quality care and medicine, he said in the 2003 profile. That's what I always tried to do. In the 2003 profile, Fred Volk, a longtime friend and fellow trustee of University Hospital, called Dr. O'Connor a doctor's doctor who was always on call, always on station. Dr. O'Connor is a strong advocate of patient care, regardless of stature or ability to pay. ... He was always for the patient, he said. In addition to his family, Dr. O'Connor considered his most important accomplishment to be the delivery of 4,000 babies over his 28-year career. He retired in 1979 and went on to serve an additional 10 years with the New York State Medical Society. He retired from that post as deputy executive vice president. MANY ACHIEVEMENTS Among his other achievements is SIIAS's prestigious Leng and Davis Award, which he received in 1990. A former president of the Staten Island Kiwanis Club, he was awarded the Staten Island Rotary Club's Paul Harris Fellow Award in 1992. Dr. O'Connor also received the Staten Island YMCA and Salvation Army community service awards, and was selected for Assemblyman Robert Straniere's Community Heroes and Heroines award in 1990. He was a member of the Wagner College Inner Circle, where he served on the board of trustees. In addition, he is listed in Who's Who in America and Who's Who in the East. Dr. O'Connor was a member of the board of trustees of the American Red Cross, the Staten Island Chamber of Commerce, the Salvation Army, University Hospital, and Calvary Presbyterian Church in West Brighton -- where he and his wife were both ordained elders. He was a member of the New York State Medical Society; Richmond County Medical Society; Richmond Forest, Tall Cedars of Lebanon; Five Star Post, American Legion, and Richmond County Country Club. Intrigued by genealogy, Dr. O'Connor filled cabinets in his basement with family histories he amassed during decades of research. Though he was only able to trace his roots to the mid-19th century on his mother's side, he was able to track his wife's ancestors to 1060 England. He also enjoyed coin, stamp and mineral collecting, playing golf, traveling and spending time with his family. In addition to his wife of 62 years, Olive, surviving are his two sons, Robert W. and Richard C.; his daughter, Carol McCaffrey; a brother, Dick Schlaefer; six grandchildren, and a great-grandson. The funeral service will be Saturday at 10 a.m. in Calvary Presbyterian Church. Burial will follow in Moravian Cemetery, New Dorp. The arrangements are being handled by the Huff & Lakjer Funeral Home, Lansdale, Pa. ANN MARIE AGNELLO, 57 Matriarch reserved her greatest love for her family Wednesday, September 28, 2005 Native Staten Islander Ann Marie Agnello, 57, of Howell, N.J., a homemaker, died Monday in Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Howell, where she had been receiving treatment for leukemia. Born Ann Marie Svegliato in West Brighton, she graduated from Curtis High School. A few years later, she was employed by United Airlines as a ticket salesclerk at Newark (N.J.) International Airport, a position she held for about 10 years. She married Rosebank native Vincent Agnello in August 1970, and the couple resided in Great Kills. In 1990, the family, including three sons, relocated to Howell. Mrs. Agnello enjoyed playing bingo, taking trips to Atlantic City and being the family photographer. But her greatest love was reserved for her family. Family gatherings and being with her grandkids were her big thing, said her brother-in-law, Anthony Agnello. She was a devoted mother and grandmother who held the family together. She was a candidate for stem cell research [for her leukemia], but pushed it off because of the holidays...first, Labor Day, then, looking down the road, to Thanksgiving. She never thought of herself. On Staten Island, Mrs. Agnello was a parishioner of St. Clare's R.C. Church, Great Kills. In Howell, she attended St. Veronica's R.C. Church. In addition to her husband of 35 years, Vincent, Mrs. Agnello is survived by her three sons, Vincent, James and Joseph; her mother, Ida Svegliato; her brother, Richard Svegliato, and three grandchildren. The funeral will be Friday from the Lakewood (N.J.) Funeral Home with a mass at 9:30 a.m. in St. Veronica's Church. Burial will follow in St. Mary of the Lake Cemetery, Lakewood.
