WALTER MULLIGAN, 54 Lifelong Islander loved the outdoors and gardening Thursday, September 29, 2005 Lifelong Staten Islander Walter (Mickey) Mulligan, 54, of Eltingville, died of cancer Tuesday in Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, Manhattan. My husband was an amazing man, said his wife of 32 years, the former Carol Cooper. He fought a brave and valiant fight in his ordeal with cancer. He always stayed positive and never complained. He continued to amaze me until his last minute. Born in Westerleigh, Mr. Mulligan moved to Mariners Harbor in 1973 and settled in Eltingville in 1977. He graduated from Port Richmond High School and attended Wagner College, Grymes Hill. For 34 years, Mr. Mulligan worked as an emergency service representative for Consolidated Edison, in Brooklyn. He retired in April due to his illness. A history buff and outdoorsman, he took particular pleasure in hiking and exploring many areas of the East Coast. Also a gardener, he was known for his varied crops of vegetables, fruits and flowers. Mr. Mulligan spent many hours watching sports, especially games involving the New York Yankees, the New York Jets and the New York Giants. He served in the National Guard from 1970 to 1971, stationed in Fort Knox, Ky. Mr. Mulligan was a member of Christ Lutheran Church, Great Kills. While growing up, though, he had been a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Willowbrook. In addition to his wife, Carol, surviving are his son, Walter (Jay) Mulligan IV; his two daughters, Kristin and Heather Mulligan; his mother, Ethel Mulligan, and a brother, John. The funeral will be Saturday from the Harmon Home for Funerals, West Brighton, with a service at 10 a.m. in Christ Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Moravian Cemetery, New Dorp. THOMAS MULDERRIG, 67 Often hosted gatherings for his family and friends Thursday, September 29, 2005 Thomas W. Mulderrig, 67, of Huguenot, a retired investigator with the Queens district attorney's office, died Tuesday at home, after a three-month battle with cancer. He graduated from high school in his native borough of the Bronx in 1955, then shipped off to Germany, where he was stationed with the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He served as a private until 1957. When Mr. Mulderrig returned home, he fell in love with the former Gloria Maguire. The couple married in 1961 and settled in the Throgs Neck section of the Bronx. He worked for two years as an officer with the city Department of Correction before deciding to attend John Jay College of Criminal Justice, Manhattan, where he earned a degree in criminal justice. After graduation, he began working for the Queens district attorney, gradually ascending to supervisor of detectives in its Homicide Department. In that role, Mr. Mulderrig's family said he made the newspapers repeatedly for cracking tough, and sometimes strange, cases. In 1980, he ensnared a Queens man for practicing medicine without a license by going to the emergency room where he worked and complaining of abdominal pain. When the impostor prescribed something for the pain, Mr. Mulderrig arrested him. ACCOLADES FOR WORK The detective was also in the book, The Ultimate Evil, by Maury Terry, for his role in helping solve the Son of Sam serial-killer case, said his daughter, Gloria Panattieri. Mr. Mulderrig's work earned him many awards, including the New York State Police Academy Award, the International Police Association Award and the Eugene J. Kelly Jr. Award. His whole life was his job, said his daughter. He talked about it all the time, because he had cracked so many big cases. He was so interested in the criminal justice system. In 2000, Mr. Mulderrig retired after a 31-year career. He did not go quietly. Friends threw him a retirement party with 500 guests. Recalled Gloria Panattieri, The judges and lawyers got up and gave speeches about him and one was funnier than the next. In 2001, Mr. Mulderrig and his wife moved to Huguenot, into a two-family home they shared with their daughter, Lisa Panattieri. An Irishman with a quick wit and a warm disposition, Mr. Mulderrig had many friends and hosted impromptu gatherings at his home nearly every weekend, said Gloria Panattieri. LOVED TO COOK They wanted everyone there 24 hours, she said. Her father loved to cook for his visitors, too, especially his children and grandchildren. He was particularly proud of his pasta fagioli, which, she added, My daughter misses. One of Mr. Mulderrig's most defining traits was his sharp sense of humor. He would think of things so quickly that were so funny, everyone would fall on the floor laughing, said Gloria Panattieri. She recalled the time her mother discarded her father's old, soiled detective's raincoat. He pulled it out of the trash, ketchup stains and all, and said, This is my whole career in the garbage! Mr. Mulderrig never failed to see the comedy in the fact that his three daughters married three cousins -- all Panattieri boys -- and ended up with the same surnames again. He really cared about his sons-in-law and his three girls, said Gloria Panattieri. He loved taking road trips with his family, and spent many weekends in Atlantic City with his wife. Mr. Mulderrig also loved horse races and the conviviality of Irish bars and music. In addition to his wife, Gloria, and his daughters, Gloria and Lisa, surviving are his daughter, Patricia Panattieri; a sister, Anne Doyle, and four grandchildren. The funeral will be Saturday from the Colonial Funeral Home, New Dorp, with a mass at 9:45 a.m. in Our Lady Star of the Sea R.C. Church, Huguenot. Burial will follow in Resurrection Cemetery, Pleasant Plains.
