WILLIAM O'KEEFE, 76 Firefighter for more than 30 years was a craftsman and the 'family handyman' Friday, September 30, 2005 William O'Keefe, 76, of Great Kills, a retired firefighter, died yesterday in Staten Island University Hospital, Ocean Breeze. Born in the Bronx, he worked as a plumber there before moving to Staten Island 2005 around the age of 23 -- living in New Dorp before settling in Great Kills when he married the former Anne Deignan in 1960. In 1952, Mr. O'Keefe joined the U.S. Air Force and served as an air traffic controller in Japan. He was discharged in 1956. For more than 30 years, Mr. O'Keefe was a member of the city Fire Department. He served at Engine Co. 73, the Bronx, and Engine Co. 151, Tottenville, until retiring in 1989. He then worked as a real estate appraiser for the former TRW on Long Island and the former Westside Federal in Dongan Hills. Mr. O'Keefe was a craftsman and woodsmith, and his family will treasure the creations he made for them, including baby cradles, chests and outdoor furniture, they said. He loved to spend time with his family -- often helping members as the family handyman with projects around their homes. The proud grandfather of 11, was also anxiously awaiting the birth of his 12th grandchild in two weeks. Our 'Pop' was a wonderful, talented, kind, generous and loving man, said his daughter, Helen DeBiase. We were the lucky ones to have him for our dad. In addition to his 11 grandchildren, his daughter, Helen, and his wife of 44 years, Anne, surviving are his daughter, Anne Brunetti; his two sons, Daniel and John; two brothers, John and James, and a sister, Helen Niederhauser. The funeral will be Monday from the Casey-McCallum-Rice South Shore Funeral Home, with a mass at 11 a.m. in St. Clare's R.C. Church, both Great Kills. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery, Pleasant Plains. SOPHIE DeBIASE, 88 Taught her children to love Italian and Polish food Friday, September 30, 2005 Lifelong Staten Islander Sophie DeBiase, 88, of Rosebank, a homemaker and a retired luncheonette supervisor, died Wednesday in St. Luke's Hospital, Cornwall, N.Y., while visiting her daughter's home. A native of Travis, the former Sophie Tokarzewski attended Port Richmond High 1985 School, but left in order to find work to help her family during the Depression. In 1937, she and Angelo DeBiase were married, and the couple settled in Rosebank. "Her family was the main interest in her life. She loved to be with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren," said Mrs. DeBiase's daughter, Carol Russo -- who added that the family often went to her mother's house for Sunday dinners. A great cook, Mrs. DeBiase expertly prepared both Polish and Italian dishes, noting both sides of her family heritage. "She was 100 percent Polish, but she married my father, who was Italian, and she learned to cook all the Italian foods and became excellent at it. She handed all the recipes down to the kids," said her daughter. Mrs. DeBiase worked for 20 years as the luncheonette supervisor at the former Woolworth's store in Stapleton. She retired in 1984. An avid reader, Mrs. DeBiase also enjoyed listening to the radio -- especially AM radio talk shows. A big New York Yankees fan, she occasionally went to games, but enjoyed watching her favorite team on TV more. "She saw it better and heard it better," said Mrs. Russo. "She used to yell at the TV." Mrs. DeBiase was a parishioner of St. Joseph R.C. Church, Rosebank. Her husband of 34 years, Angelo, died in 1971. In addition to her daughter, surviving are her two sons, Angelo Jr. and Michael; her daughter, Sharon Everson; a brother, Henry Tokarzewski; two sisters, Jean Watson and Helen Sleap; nine grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren. Mrs. DeBiase's son, Anthony, died in June. The funeral will be tomorrow from the Virginia Funeral Chapel, Dongan Hills, with a mass at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph's Church. Burial will be in St. Peter's Cemetery, West Brighton. MICHAEL O'SHEA, 78 World War II veteran was a devoted coin collector Friday, September 30, 2005 Michael P. O'Shea, 78, of Mariners Harbor, a retired foreman for the city Transportation Department, died Wednesday in St. Vincent's Hospital, West Brighton. Mr. O'Shea was born in Brooklyn. In 1944, he joined 1958 the U.S. Navy, becoming a Seabee during World War II. He served in both the Pacific and Atlantic, before being discharged in 1946. Back in Brooklyn, he soon met the former Phyllis R. Yannone. She was a teller at a bank in Manhattan where he worked as an armed guard. The couple married in 1958 and settled in Mariners Harbor. In 1959, Mr. O'Shea began working as a laborer for the city Highway Department, now the Department of Transportation. He climbed the ranks to foreman before retiring in 1978. A devoted coin collector, he then pursued a lifelong ambition to have a coin shop, opening Shamrock Coins in Port Richmond, but, overwhelmed by the pressures of running a store, closed it about two years later. Mr. O'Shea continued, however, to attend coin shows and expand his collection, with the help of his three sons. He also spent hours each day on the computer, reading and surfing the Internet. Describing his father as a well-liked family man, his son, Patrick, said, He was a good father. He always worried about his kids, even as we got older. When his eldest son, Michael Jr., moved to Pennsylvania, Mr. O'Shea always commented that he belonged back on Staten Island with his brothers and father. Mr. O'Shea's wife, Phyllis, died in 2001. Also surviving, in addition to his sons, Patrick and Michael Jr., is his son, Shaun. The funeral service will be Monday at 11 a.m. in the Meislohn-Silvie Funeral Home, Port Richmond. Monsignor Nicholas Soares, pastor of St. Clement/St. Michael R.C. Parish, Mariners Harbor, will officiate. Burial will be in St. Peter's Cemetery, West Brighton. MARGARET PROSCIA, 81 St. Vincent's Hospital volunteer enjoyed theater Friday, September 30, 2005 Margaret Proscia, 81, a retired bank administrator, died Wednesday at her Mariners Harbor home. Born Margaret Torissi in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, she 2005 settled in Mariners Harbor in 1964. For 25 years, Mrs. Proscia worked in the money exchange and other departments of Chase Bank in Lower Manhattan. She retired in 1985. Mrs. Proscia was the newly elected vice president of the Mariners Harbor Senior Center and a member of an Island AARP chapter. She also donated her time at St. Vincent's Hospital in West Brighton, volunteering in various hospital labs and delivering books to patients -- an avid reader herself, she enjoyed discussing books with them. Mrs. Proscia also enjoyed sewing, cooking, playing cards and Scrabble and attending the theater. Her children said she was the "heart of our family who bore a shining light amongst her loved ones. We were blessed to have her as part of our lives." Mrs. Proscia and her sister, Gloria, married two brothers -- Vito and Steven Proscia, respectively. Mrs. Proscia's husband of 43 years, Vito, died in 1987. She was a very active parishioner of St. Clement/St. Michael R.C. parish, Mariners Harbor. In addition to her sister, Gloria, Mrs. Proscia is survived by her son, William N.; her three daughters, Angela Syre, Eleanor Gladkowski and Janet Gerra; a brother, Joseph Torissi; her sister, Lena Schrippa; 11 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren. Burial will follow in Moravian Cemetery, New Dorp. JOHN LEWIS, 46 Animal lover was Island veterinary technician Friday, September 30, 2005 Lifelong Staten Islander John Joseph Lewis, 46, of Port Richmond, a door and cabinetmaker and former veterinary technician, died yesterday of cancer in St. Vincent's Hospital, West Brighton. The kindhearted man who loved animals grew up in 1985 West Brighton, and graduated from Curtis High School in 1976, where he enjoyed theater and singing. As a youngster, he was active in a Boy Scout troop based at Assumption R.C. School in New Brighton. Mr. Lewis met his wife, the former Alison Bakal, while he worked in the mailroom of First Investors in Manhattan. Theirs was a love that was magical, said his mother, Genevieve Lewis. It was love at first sight, she said. They used to walk to the store hand-in-hand. Even now. They were still so in love. The couple moved to Dongan Hills after marrying, and settled in Port Richmond in 1984. For many years, Mr. Lewis worked as a veterinary technician at a number of different Island practices, including the practice of Dr. Frank Borzio at Northside Animal Hospital in West Brighton. Five years ago, he took a job making cabinets and windows for Enjo Architectural Millwork in Port Richmond. Mr. Lewis had cats, birds, fish and a boa constrictor at his home. But he kept the house immaculate, his mother said. He also enjoyed taking long walks and fishing. He loved people; he never hurt anybody in his life, said his mother. Even if it was the most rotten person, he would see the good in them. I used to marvel at how he did things. Mr. Lewis was a parishioner of Sacred Heart R.C. Church, West Brighton. In addition to his wife of 26 years, Alison, and his mother, Genevieve, surviving are his brother, Edward, and his four sisters, Donnalynn Lawton, Karen Malone, and Audrey and Theresa Lewis. For about five years, Mrs. Martin worked as a nurse's aide for New Vanderbilt Rehabilitation and Care Center, Clifton. She enjoyed dressing up, going out and dancing. Mrs. Martin was also very family-oriented. "She was a great mother. Her kids were everything to her," said her daughter, Latifa Martin. "She had a warm heart and would do anything for anyone to help them." Mrs. Martin was a member of the Church of Christ-North Shore in Port Richmond. In addition to her daughter, Latifa, surviving are her son, Isa; her daughter, Lakeisha Martin; her father, Freddy Haynes; her companion, Stanley Johnson; three brothers, Gregory, Victor and Bernard Josey; two sisters, Diane and Judy Josey; her ex-husband, Wayne Martin Jr., and four grandchildren. WALTER ROHRS, 87 Owned a grocery business before changing careers Friday, September 30, 2005 By CLAIRE REGAN Dr. Walter F. Rohrs, 87, of Silver Lake, a retired professor of business at Wagner College who taught thousands of students the trade secrets he learned himself as a successful businessman, died Wednesday in St. Vincent's Hospital, West Brighton. Born July 25, 1918, on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, Dr. Rohrs graduated from the former Lincoln School. He subsequently lived in every borough before settling on Staten Island in 1966. He earned a bachelor of science degree in commerce and finance in 1939 from Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pa., where he was accepted into honor societies for business, journalism, economics and German and received the economics prize at commencement. The following year, at just 21, Dr. Rohrs received a master's degree in business administration from the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School. His thesis focused on wholesaling, a topic he knew well as proprietor, with his father, of Middendorf & Rohrs, a Manhattan wholesale grocery business. After his father's death, the business was sold and Dr. Rohrs embarked on a second career as a college professor. He was hired by Wagner in 1965, and taught undergraduate and graduate courses in economics, marketing and management. He received his doctorate in business administration from New York University in 1976. He always appreciated his position at Wagner because, at almost 50, he was hired with no teaching experience but plenty of practical experience, said his only son, Richard, a history professor at Oklahoma State University. MENTORED STUDENTS Dr. Rohrs retired from Wagner in 1988, but continued to serve the college on a part-time basis, teaching an occasional course in business and working in the Center for Career Development and Experiential Learning, where he mentored students and helped place them in internships. Throughout retirement, Dr. Rohrs spent time on campus nearly every day, attending sports events and faculty forums. Students and colleagues recalled his dignified style and gentle manner. He was kind to students, said Camille Cook, who works in the Career Development Office and took several business classes with Dr. Rohrs. He was never intimidating and always made time for students. He was a wealth of information, said Elena Anarumo Gallo, who graduated from Wagner in 1990 with a degree in business administration and now works for Wachovia Bank. Dr. Rohrs put a human touch on the cold world of business with stories about his family and his experiences. It was like being taught by your grandfather. Dr. Rohrs held many professional memberships and authored or co-authored a half-dozen marketing and business-related books. He also wrote numerous journal articles and a business advice column for the Advance. WROTE WITH HUMOR But he liked to write about other topics as well, and wasn't afraid to display some of his characteristically dry sense of humor in his writing. In spring 2004, he contributed an essay to Nimbus, Wagner's literary arts magazine, titled Zucchini, Anyone? In it, he confessed his recent discovery of, and newfound fascination with, the vegetable. Being someone who primarily relies on commercially prepared meals, and knowing next to nothing about cooking, he wrote, I was recently involved in a discussion about whether or not I enjoyed eating zucchini. Although I had not eaten any for a considerable length of time, it seemed like a good idea to add it to my limited repertoire of cooking achievements. Dr. Rohrs was a parishioner of Trinity Lutheran Church in Stapleton, and enjoyed collecting stamps and model trains, especially trains manufactured in Germany by Marklin. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served from 1943 to 1945 as a sergeant in the Manhattan and Governors Island offices of the Adjutant General's Department. Dr. Rohrs enjoyed traveling with his wife of nearly 60 years, Helen, until her death five years ago. Together they toured Greenland, Iceland, Scandinavia, Thailand, Alaska, Japan, the Panama Canal and most of Europe. Favorite destinations were London and the Swiss town of Zermatt. The two of them adored one another, said the Rev. Lyle Guttu, Wagner's longtime chaplain. They always had something to talk about and entertained each other endlessly. In addition to his son, Dr. Rohrs is survived by two grandchildren. The funeral service will be Monday at 9:30 a.m. in the Harmon Home for Funerals, West Brighton. Private interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, the Bronx. DAVID ALLEN, 57 Freelance musician, songwriter played bass guitar Friday, September 30, 2005 David S. Allen III of Tompkinsville, a restoration artist and musician, died Wednesday in St. Vincent's Hospital, West Brighton, following a short illness. He was 57. Born in St. Vincent's Hospital, Mr. Allen was raised in 2002 Oakwood and graduated from St. Peter's Boys High School, New Brighton. He lived in Elizabeth, N.J., for several years, before returning to Staten Island about five years ago, moving to Tompkinsville. From 1969 to 1972, Mr. Allen served as an able-bodied seaman in the U.S. Navy. He was stationed aboard the USS McCloy, which was docked in Norfolk, Va. Mr. Allen was a free-lance musician, songwriter and restoration painter. He played rhythm and blues and country music on the bass guitar -- and also played with the group, The Saddle Tramps. Surviving are his son, Steven; his daughter, Samantha Allen; his mother, Vera Armstrong; two brothers, Michael and Jack, and a sister, Ronnee Balogh. The funeral service will be Monday at 10:30 a.m. in the Harmon Home for Funerals, West Brighton. The arrangements include cremation.
