The last Will and Testament and Codicil of Knowlton Howland late of the Town of Halfmoon was recorded on the 16th day of March 1892 at a Surrogate's Court, held in and for the County of Saratoga at the Surrogate's office in the Village of the Mechanicville, on 16 March 1892 before Elias H. Peters, Surrogate. The proceedings identified the following heirs and next of kin: Charles M. Howland, Erwin L. Howland, Oceanna Howland, Harriet L. Wood, Nettie Howland, Seymore C. Howland, John W. Kirby, Mary H. Kirby, Silas S. Howland, Eva R. Howland, and Lewis Howland. Will The last Will and Testament of Knowlton Howland of the Town of Halfmoon, County of Saratoga and State of New York I, Knowlton Howland make this my last Will and Testament. viz. First – I hereby authorize and empower my executor hereinafter appointed to sell at public or private sale my house and lot situated on the west side of Main Street in the Village of Mechanicville Saratoga County, NY. Being the house and lot that I purchased a part interest of the heirs of Louisiana Clements deceased by deed of conveyance dated April 2 1888. And I authorize said executors to sell at public or private sale any other real estate that I may own at my decease and give to each or purchaser or purchasers of same a good and sufficient executors deed of conveyance. Second – I give and bequeath to my son Samuel B. Howland or his heirs my one horse cart, one horse lumber wagon, all my shop and garden tools, one wheel- barrow, one old cherry table, all of my bee hives, my peperage mash stand, my hat-rack that I usually kept in the front hall, my iron chair that I generally kept in the front stoop, my boat or skiff with the oars and fixtures belonging to it, two boxes of spring- water bottles, one hogshead with vinegar and mother, one barrel with vinegar in cellar, two kegs with deeps of wine, one large jug with wine, one demijohn with wine, and one grape or wine mill and press, one manure fork, two hay forks, one harrow or drag, one snow shovel, my bedstead, spring bed, sponge mattress, pillows, sheets, covers, and the whole bed equipage now at my son Samuel B. Howland's house. (note: "peperage" in the above paragraph likely refers to "pepperidge," the barberry or black gum tree) Third – I give and bequeath to my daughter Harriett L. Wood wife of Joseph H. Wood and her heirs my horse, my phaeton wagon, harness, cutter and one desk with the clothes that are therein, one bookcase with the books therein, four chairs card desk book case and chairs being now in her possession – Also all the bedsteads, beds and bedding that I may own at my decease not herein otherwise bequeathed. Fourth – I give and bequeath all the rest, residue and remainder of my personal estate which includes the proceeds of my real estate which I have hereinbefore directed to be sold by my executors hereinafter appointed to my seven children or their heirs, viz. Samuel B. Howland, Mary Kirby wife of John W. Kirby, Lewis Howland, Harriet L. Wood wife of Joseph H. Wood, Silas S. Howland, Seymour C. Howland and Nettie Howland to be divided equally between them. Fifth and lastly – I hereby appoint my son Samuel B. Howland and my son- in-law John W. Kirby executors of this my last Will revoking any former Will by me made. And I authorize and empower my said executors in settlement of my real estate and of any debts due me to compromise such debts and if they think it advantageous to my estate to accept in satisfaction less than the full amount thereof. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 20th day of February 1889. Knowlton Howland L.S. The foregoing instrument was at the date thereof signed, sealed, published and declared by the said Knowlton Howland as and in his last Will and Testament in presence of us who at his request and in his presence and in the presence of each other have susbscribed their names as witnesses Silas H. NY Codicil Whereas I Knowlton Howland did heretofore make my last Will and Testament dated the 20th day of February AD 1889 now I make this Codicil to said Will to be taken as a part thereof – Whereas I did in said Will give and bequeath to my son Silas S. Howland the one seventh part of all the rest, residue and remainder of my personal estate as contained in the fourth clause of the said Will now I revoke said bequest and all that I gave to my son Silas S. in said Will dated February 20th 1889 I now herein give and bequeath to Eva R. Howland wife of said son Silas S. Howland or her heirs. In witness whereof I now hereunto subscribe my name this first day of October 1889. Knowlton Howland L.S.
