Benjamin (1811-1884) was born Aug., 6, 1811 in Danish West Indies then under temporary British occupation in the Napolonic Wars, now U. S. owned Virgin Islands. Prominent in the Cabinet of the Confederate States of America (1861- 1865). A confident of President Jefferson Davis, he was the only Jewish member of the Cabinet. He served as Attorney General, Secretary of War, Secretary of State, CSA. At the end of the war when General Robert E. Lee (4 star) surrendered to Lieutenant General Ulysses Grant, April 9, 1865, Judah made his way to Key West, Fl., where he took a ship to England renewing his British citizenship. He was a leader of the English bar. He died in Paris, France where his wife and child had lived a number of years. Buried in Paris in an undistinguished grave. In 1938 the Daughters of the Confederacy eracted a plaque recognizing his service to Mankind. He wrote "A Treatise on the Law of sale of Personal Property." Known as "Benjamin on Sales." which is still a legal classic. His career is one of the most remarkable examples in modern history of successful struggle against adversity. John B.
