Lyon Company, 1909 Edward Austin Bond, Civil Engineer, Chairman of Advisory Board of Engineers, was born at Dexter, Mich., April 22, 1849. His first engineering work was for the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad in 1867 to 1870, and afterward the Utica & Black River Railroad from 1870 to 1875. He was Chief Engineer of the latter company until 1886, when he became Chief Engineer and General Superintendent of the Carthage & Adirondack Railroad. in 1889 he formed a copartnership under the firm name of hinds & Bond of Watertown, doing a general engineering and contracting business. In 1898 he was elected State Engineer aml Surveyor of New York and in 1890-92 was re-elected to that office, resigning May 1, 1904, to accept the position of Chairman of the Advisory Board of Engineers in charge of the construction of the thousand-ton Barge Canal. As State Engineer the improvement of public highways by State Aid was inaugurated under him, and the work received his personal attention and was brought to an assured success. He is a prominent Mason; a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers and the Lincoln League and of several clubs.
