Lyon Company, 1909 William Leary, State Superintendent of Elections for the Metropolitan Elections Dsitrict, was born in the city of New York on April 8, 1854. He graduated from Grammar School No. 11 on March 7, 1866, before he was twelve years of age. Not being able to enter the City College until he was fourteen his father took him to the law office of the Hon. Edward Mitchell, on the 23d of January, 1867, forty years to the day on which he took office as Superintendent of Elections. After working over three years in the office of Mitchell & Mitchell, he engaged in the newspaper advertising business. He became Business Manager of "The New York Press" when that paper was purchased by Henry L. Einstein. He was Secretary of the Park Department under the administration of Mayor Strong, and Secretary of the Fire Department under Mayor Low. Mr. Leary have been actively engaged in political affairs in a reputable way in New York city for many years and had an opportunity to note the methods by which illegal voting is accomplished, and therefore is well equipped to detect and punish such voting. He successfully managed a number of political campaigns in New York city and nominated Theodore Roosevelt for his first office, that of Member of Assembly, in October, 1881. He is unmarried and resides with his sisters at No. 67 East Fifty-fourth street, New York. He is by religion a Roman Catholic. He is a member of the Republican and Lotos Clubs and the Educational Alliance, and a Director of the Library Square Realty Company and Amen Corner Corporation.
