Lyon Company, 1909 William McCarroll of New York city was born in Belfast, Ireland, on May 26, 1851, and was educated in Russell's Academy and in the Royal Academic Institute of Ireland. In 1869 he left Ireland and came to New York. He there entered the employment of Alexander Studwell & Co., leather dealers. When the American Leather Company was organized in 1902 Mr. McCarroll was elected president of the corporation. When appointed Public Service Commissioner he was also president of the Morocco Manufacturers' National Association, of the New York, Board of Trade and Transportation, and of the Manufacturers' Association. AT the same period he was chairman of the National Committee for the Promotion of Foreign Commerce, a director of the National Manufacturers' Association, vice-president of the Brooklyn Young Men's Christian Association, and a member of the Union League Club.
