Lyon Company, 1909 John Williams, Commissioner of Labor, was born in North Wales in 1865. He was the son of a contractor and he learned his father's business. When twenty-two years of age he came to the United States and found employment in Utica, first as a bookkeeper and then as a journeyman carpenter. In 1897 he was elected an Assemblyman from the First District of Oneida County. Upon the conclusion of his term in 1899 Governor Roosevelt appointed him a State Factor Inspector. When the various divisions of the Department of Labor were consolidated in 1901 Mr. Williams was appointed First Deputy Labor Commissioner under Commissioner McMackin and he continued to hold that position until placed at the head of the Department.
