WAR PENSION APPLICATION S# - 32507; BLWT # - 9054-160-55, Pension approved State of New York ) (SS:) AS: on the 19th day of June 1833 Steuben County ) personnally appeared in open court before the court of Common Pleas of Said County of Steuben now sitting John Saxon a resident of the town of Wheeler in the said County of Steuben and State of New York aged seventy one years who being first duly sworn according to the law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the act of Congress (posted)_____(?) June 7, 1832 That he entered the service of the United States under the following named officers and Served as herein Stated That this deponent enlisted in the State troops of the State of New York on the first day of May 1781 at the hand of Captain Josuha Hyatt at a place called Scrub Oak plains in the County of Westchester and state aforesaid and about Seven miles East of Hudson's river. That this deponent was enlisted as aforesaid by Captain Richard Sackett and the next day after he so enlisted he joined the company into, which he enlisted at Bedford in said County of Westchester, which last mentioned place was the (provisions) _____(?) for the said Company That this deponent enlisted as aforesaid for the term of Eight months as a private in said Company and joined said Company at Bedford as aforesaid on the last day aforesaid under the command of Captain Richard Sackett first Lieutenant William Mosher and Second Lieutenant Tucker That this deponent does not recollect the Christian name of the said Tucker That this deponent remained at Bedford aforesaid under the command of the last mentioned officers two weeks waiting for said company to file up That at the expiration of two weeks from the time this deponent arrived at Bedford the said company received their compliment of men) _____(?) and That he this deponent together with Said Company under the command of the last mentioned officers in Company with another Company of State troops under the command of a Captain Williams, marched to a place called Middle (Pattern) ____(?) on what was then called the lines between the Americans and the british in said country of Westchester and about three miles from Bedford That this deponent and the company to which he belonged under the last mentioned officers remained on the lines as it was then called to guard the (same) _____(?) marching through the following places during the period of eight months in which this deponent served in Said Company ____(?), Quaker, (Ridge) ____(?) Round Hill, Harrison's purchase, White Plains, East Chester, Rye, Saw Pitts, Pine Bridge, Tarrytown, Sing Sing, and Dobbs Ferry on the Worth (or North) River and Bedford That all the places above mentioned were in the County of Westchester aforesaid and That the deponent and his company under the aforesaid officers or some of them marched backward and forward through the said last mentioned places during the aforementioned Eight months for which this deponent enlisted as aforesaid That on the first of July 1781 this deponent together with the Company to which he belonged under the aforesaid officers were joined at Bedford aforesaid by the French Army under the command of the Count de Rochambeau and on the next day about Six o'clock in the afternoon this deponent and His Company under the command of the first named officers marched with the French army from Bedford And after marching during the whole night arrived the next morning at a place called Morrisena between York Island and the colonies in the County of Westchester aforesaid That this deponent and the Company to which he belonged immediately after and on the same morning they arrived at the last mentioned place joined a regiment of American Soldiers under the command of Col. Scammell That Morrisena had been (evacuated) _____(?) by the Brittish upon the approach of the Americans and the French and the day before their arrival That the aforesaid Regiment and Company together with this deponent under Col. Scammell and the aforesaid officers marched past fort Independence, crossed Williams bridge across a river called Brussels River where they stopped a few hours to watch the movements of the Enemy and marched from thence and on the Same day joined the American Army under the command of General Washington on the post road leading along the Hudson River from the City of New York to Albany. That the regiment to which this deponent belonged was accompanied in their march from Morrisena aforesaid to (their) ___(?) Junction with the American Army under General Washington about four miles from Kings bridge near the city of New York where this deponent remained together with the whole army two days That this deponent together with the company and regiment to which he belonged marched together with some French troops to a place called Dobbs ferry on the Hudson River three miles below Tarrytown where they encamped and remained for some time That in a few days after Such encampment this deponent was Sent out together with twelve others on a Scouting party under a Captain (Torey) ___(?) and marched through a place near Hudson's River called Phillips Woods That this deponent and his party were attacked by the British in the might and while they were on their return to Dobbs Ferry and two of their number a Sargent and a Corporal were killed That this deponent and the residue of the Scouts returned to Dobbs Ferry where they encamped with the Regiment under Col. Scammuel and the French Troops crossed the Hudson River and marched with the American and French Army to the South That on the same day this deponent and the company to which he belonged under the first named officers marched from Dobbs Ferry to Pines Bridge where they remained about ten days when this deponent and his company were put under the Command of Col. Sheldon and remained under his command about ten days, Where this deponent and his company under the first mentioned officers marched from Pine's Bridge backward and forward along the lines watching the movement of the enemy until the first day of November, When this deponent and thirty men under the command of Captain Richard Sackett and First Lieutenant William Mosher aforesaid, were on a scout about three miles East of White Plains when they were attacked by forty-five british light horsemen, That previous to the attack upon the deponent and his companions, the British had taken Captain Sackett prisoner while he was breakfasting at a house nearby That this deponent and his companions were commanded in the attack by their First Lieutenant William Mosher That the British light horsemen after two charges were forced to retire with the top (loss) ___(?) of one man and two horses killed and several wounded That on the part of the Americans there were none that were killed and but (one wounded) ___(?) wounded That after the last mentioned attack this deponent and his company under the command of the first and 2nd lieutenants aforesaid remained at White Plain and its neighborhood watching the British activities until the first day of January 1782 When this deponent was duly discharged at a place called Summerstown plain in the County of Westchester aforesaid That this deponent was discharged by Lieutenant Mosher who after Captain Richard Sackett was taken prisoner as (aforesaid) of ____(?) have command of the company That this deponent was during the aforesaid term of Eight months employed and engaged in actual services during the whole time That this deponent was not (during) ____(?) any part of the aforesaid turn of eight months engaged in any Civil pursuit And that this deponent further says that he was born in the City and State of New York on the Seventeenth day of November 1761 That he has since the Revolution resided in the following places and for the following time periods to wit: For six months immediately after the close of the war this deponent resided with an Uncle in the City of New York That he then moved to Amawalk in the Said county of Westchester where he lived with a man named Joseph Osburn one year That this deponent then married and moved into the County of Dutchess and the town of (Frederick) ____(?) now county of Putnam and town of Kent in the State aforesaid where he resided until the 9th day of October 1825 When he moved to the town of Wheeler and the County of Steuben and the State aforesaid Where he has (ever) ____(?) since resided and still resides That this deponent resided at the time he entered the Service at Amawalk in the County of Westchester and State aforesaid This deponent did not at the time he was discharged as aforesaid receive a written discharge That this deponent has no record of his age That there was a record of his age kept in his father's family and in his prayer book, which record was carried away by his oldest sister who has since moved to England But whether said record's in existence or not this deponent's unable to state And this deponent further states that Daniel F. Drew of the town of Puttensey (?) and the County of Steuben aforesaid And Shubel Wixson of the town of Wheeler aforesaid and David B. Coviel a clergyman of the town of (Urbana) ____(?) County of Steuben and the State of New York aforesaid live neighbors to this neighbor and can testify to this deponents character for truth and veracity and their belief of his being a Soldier of the Revolution That he hereby (relinquishes) ___(?) ____(?) other claim for a pension ____(?) And declares that his name is not on the pension roll of any agency in any state. (signed) John Saxon
