J. PARDEE, LOCAL JEWELER FOR OVER FIFTY YEARS, PASSES AWAY Amos J. Pardee, who came to Wayland and opened a jewelry store July 6th, 1871, which he had conducted until poor health caused him to close it about a year ago, died Saturday night at the age of nearly 87 years. Mr. Pardee had been in business longer than any merchant in the village and coming here when the population of the village was about 400, had witnessed many remarkable changes in the growth and development of business interests. In 1871 the village of Dansville, without a railroad, received its mail, express and freight by way of the Erie here, a plank road being maintained between the two villages. At that time wood was used as fuel in the engines of the Erie. Mr. Pardee was a man of kindly disposition and a familiar figure in the village for many years. He is survived only by nieces and nephews, his wife having died some few years ago. The funeral was held at his late home Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, Rev. C. H. Gall officiating and burial was in the local cemetery. Wayland Area Scrapbook 1920-1926, Gunlocke Library, Wayland, Steuben Co., NY
