BALCH DIES AT THE AGE OF 83 After a very brief illness, Nathan M. Balch, for many years a resident of Jackson County, passed away in his apartments in the von Schrader flats about six o’clock Saturday evening. Death was due to the infirmities of old age. Mr. Balch was around town a few days before attacked by his last illness and while he complained of not feeling well, did not think his condition in anywise serious. For many years he had been about town, always jovial and friendly, enjoying the companionship of old friends with whom he could recall the old times and incidents. Deceased was born in Potsdam, New York, December 25, 1835 and when a young man came to Iowa and Jackson county, settling in the vicinity of Baldwin, where he engaged in farming and later was engaged in the livery business. After retiring from the livery business, he and his wife came to Maquoketa, making their home on Arcade Street until the death of Mrs. Balch several years ago. Since that time Mr. Balch had been living alone. He followed the business of auctioneering for several years after coming to this city and was very successful along this line of work. The remains, accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. B. C. Collins, old friends of the deceased, were taken on Monday morning to his old home at Potsdam, where funeral services will be held and the remains laid beside those of his wife.
