For a few days following the operation her family and friends were very hopeful for her recovery but her condition became more serious last Monday and from that time until the end her death had been expected almost hourly. She had been in rather poor health for several years but was able to be about most of the time until shortly before she was taken to the hospital. Mrs. Pike was born in Saratoga county November 29, 1835, a daughter of John D. and Olive Smith Newell. Her parents came to this town when she was a young child and she was educated here and upwards of 55 years ago she married George Pike, a young farmer, and they located on a farm in the town of Antwerp, near Spragueville. His death occurred over 40 years ago and the widow had since lived in this village where she reared and educated her family of four children, bestowing upon them a true mother's love an care through the intervening years, and she was doubly repaid by their love and sympathetic care in after years. Mrs. Pike was almost a lifelong member of the Baptist church and while her health permitted she had given much time and attention to religious work in her church and its various branches. She was beloved by all who knew her, a fact which became very evident during her last illness, and while her death had been expected for a day or two the new of her demise came as a great shock to all. Since she entered the hospital her entire family had been at her bedside almost constantly. She leave to mourn her loss, one son, George E. Pike, a well known farmer of this town, and three daughters, Mrs. B. G. Parker, and the Misses Nina and Carrie Pike, the latter two being teachers in the local schools who have always lived with their mother in their Rock Island street home. She also leaves three sisters, Mrs. Hellen Draper of this village, and Mrs. Idella VanBuren and Mrs. William Phair of Brooklyn, and one brother, Dr. J. T. Newell also of Brooklyn. The body was brought home on the noon train today and the funeral services will be conducted from the late home in Rock Island street at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon by her pastor, Rev. Irving H. Beckworth, and internment will be made in Riverside cemetery. Helena Olive Newell Pike died 1/12/1915
