He died August 12, 2005 after courageously battling a life-long bout with Muscular Dystrophy. He is survived by his father, Howard Bernard, and step-mother, Renate Bernard. His brother, James Bernard, and his wife, Susan Lacy. His sister, Joan Schrom, and her husband, Joseph. Nephews Michael Kolta, Joseph Schrom. Nieces Heidi Kolta, Anna Bernard, Sara Bernard and Jacqueline Schrom, and many cousins. Partner of many years Janet. He is predeceased by his mother, Madeline Bernard, his sister and brother-in-law Kathleen and Magdi Kolta. Tom had a determination and strength of will that impressed all who knew him. It was this power that allowed him to come through many health crises and overcome countless obstacles over many years. His intelligence and character were an inspiration. Thomas has achieved many academic honors including valedictorian at St. Agnes Cathedral School, graduation from Chaminade High School, a Bachelors Degree at Hofstra University and a Masters Degree at Adelphi University. He constantly encouraged others who were handicapped and he will be missed by all who knew him and loved him.
