Published in Newsday on 7/3/2005. Craner, M. Lawrence CRANER-M. Lawrence, Jr., 79, with gratitude for God's grace toward himself and his family, he passed away peacefully and with characteristic dignity on Thursday, June 2, 2005, in his den, at his home in The Villages, Fla., surrounded by the prayers and presence of his loving family. Larry was born in New York City on November 8, 1925, to Elizabeth Fischer and M. Lawrence Craner, Sr. He attended schools in N.Y.C., and served his country with distinction in the Navy during World War II. As Marketing and Displays Director for the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Larry organized large-scale exhibits of the space industry. Under his direction, the 1961 "Space Flight Report to the Nation" was the first exhibit to give the general public the opportunity to view space technology previously open only to industry insiders. Held at the New York Coliseum it drew over 24,000 visitors. As an added bonus, Larry arranged to have the Redstone Rocket erected next to Columbus' statue in Columbus Circle. It became LIFE Magazine's picture of the week. Larry played major roles in other key meetings and exhibits. Aeronautica '73 was the first ever US/Soviet Union cooperative technical meeting. Held in Moscow and with the public again invited, it allowed thousands of Soviet citizens to get a first hand look at emerging space technology. The Global Technology 2000 Exposition presented imaginative, future-technology concepts over several years, and linked US, European, and Japanese firms with shared technology - a concept of Larry's that pre-dates the development of a world economy model by a decade. The Urban Technology Conference presented innovative ways to use space technology in urban renewal - an exhibit personally backed by the New York City Mayor John Lindsay. Larry remained active in business after his retirement from AIAA, and founded his own company, Worldwide Expositions, with offices in Florida and Washington, D.C. Larry's creativity and charisma extended to his avocations as a singer, big band music historian, painter, surprisingly good golfer, and first-rate story and joke teller. Larry was the epitome of New York City sophistication and style, while aways being the "good guy" and life-of-the party. He is survived by his loving brothers, Robert Rogers and Richard Pendelton Craner; his devoted wife and best friend, JoAnn; his adoring and deeply loving four children, Paul, Robin, Michael, and Jessica; their spouses, Gael, Jurgen, Cathie, and Satbir; his six grandchildren, Joey, Samantha, Mike, Kevin, Sarah, and Crisi; and his great-grandson, Weslie. The family and friends he leaves behind will cherish his memory, even as they continue to seek his counsel in their thoughts and prayers. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Lake & Sumter, 601 Casa Bella, The Villages, FL 32162. Published in Newsday on 7/3/2005. Czarnecki, John J.
