Gale, Theresa McClain GALE-Theresa McClain (January 18, 1920 - June 1, 2005), known as the "Mayor of Pennsylvania Avenue" where she resided for nearly 80 years, was born in Asheville, North Carolina. Her Aunt Mary (Mamie) McClain raised Terry in her Mineola home with her foster brother Marvin Mitchell, who along with his family resides in Boston. Louis Gale, her beloved husband of 15 years, passed away in 1986. The only African-American at Mineola High School, she graduated at the top of her class and went on to become a lifelong social activist promoting equity and justice for all. Terry chaired the NAACP Juniors Group, Co-founded the Committee for Youth of Nassau County, was a member of The Americans for Democratic Action, and a 50-year member of the Democratic Committee. In recognition of her work and commitment she was name to the 1997 Town of North Hempstead Women's Honor Roll, and most recently named the 2005 North Hempstead Democratic Committee Person of the Year. Terry leaves behind many dear friends, who in life became her extended family.
