(Molly) VESPA-Mary G. (Molly) of Bayside, NY on May 26, 2005. A retired registered nurse, who for three decades was a supervisor at Manhasset Medical Center on Miracle Mile, died of Alzheimer's Disease in Ossining, NY. She was 87, and also suffered from lung cancer. Mrs. Vespa began working at Manhasset, now part of the North Shore Long Island Jewish Health System, in 1950. It was a private 130-bed general hospital with original French paintings on the walls and glamorous patients such as singer Perry Como, who then lived in nearby Sands Point. Once in the early 1960s, Mrs. Vespa herself was in her hospital recovering from a thyroid operation. Her fellow nurses joined her in her private room at 5 PM for "cocktails and cigarettes" for all the non-patients. When her doctor knocked on her door while making rounds, her friends opened the windows and hid the bar accessories. "Have you been smoking in here?" the dumbfounded man asked, as he watched the nurses flee the room like nimble white mice. The daughter of Thomas Gordon, a handsome coal miner and onetime mayor of Hughstown, PA, Mrs. Vespa was born there in 1917 and raised in neighboring Pittston. In 1935, she won a scholarship to study nursing at Mercy Hospital in Wilkes-Barre, from which she graduated three years later. "Remember, the patients come first," her mother, Margaret McNulty Gordon, told her daughter before she left to work at New York Hospital in Manhattan. "I remember seeing cars driving in the sky," Mrs. Vespa said of her first impression of the city. In the 1940s, she married Paul Vespa, a former Syracuse University football player and a teacher. In 1950, they settled in Little Neck, 12 years later moving to nearby Bayside. When Mrs. Vespa retired in 1981, a quartet of young nurses wrote: "Even though we 'kids' teased the hell out of you and probably gave you gray hairs, we both loved and respected you. You're some lady!" Her husband died in 2003, and her eldest daughter, Ann Pasquini, preceded him in 1989. Survivors include: a son, Richard, of Mount Kisko, NY, a daughter, Mary Cole of Manhattan, NY, two sisters-Kitty Harding of Scranton, PA, and Joan White of Lebanon, PA and three grandchildren, Christopher Pasquini, Michelle Vespa and Matthew Vespa as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
