Reid was no stranger to longtime residents and young people of the Bay Shore-Brentwood area. Wherever he traveled and with whomever he met, Steve would strike up a conversation, making many wonder if everyone were his friend. A man of many talents, friends and neighbors often stopped by for visits hoping to get one of his home cooked meals. Steve also loved traveling and was often the sole driver for long trips and many miles. Because of his love of fishing, many young people have enjoyed his company and teaching skills. He just enjoyed life and people. Steven Alfred Reid was born in 1929, along with his twin sister Irene. They were the second set of twins to a family of seven siblings. Steven and his twin sister were moved to Bay Shore early in life and were reared by their godparents, Steven and Grace Cuffie. Graduated from Bay Shore High School, Steve worked at Pilgrim Psychiatric Center for more than twentyfive years before his retirement in 1985. Always active, he continued to keep himself busy by working for the Brentwood School District and We Transport Company, where he continued to spread his cheer and hard work ethic to others. After his retirement from all of his jobs, he volunteered his services at OUR PLACE, a recreational facility for the developmentally disabled. Steve had advised his family that he wanted them to remember the good times and especially the family gatherings when he should leave them. Besides his devoted wife and companion, Mary Reid, also a community activist, he is survived by a son, Karl Holmes of Bay Shore, and two daughters: Stefanie Stevens of Georgia, and Stacey Powell of Brightwaters, their spouses and children; his twin sister, Irene Darrell of Virginia; brother, Ronald Reid of Uniondale; mother-in-law, Mamie Holmes of Bay Shore; and many other relatives and friends. Having become very attached to the clients of OUR PLACE, where he was affectionately known as GRANDPA REID, Steven Reid wanted to make sure that these services were available for many years to come. Therefore, the family respectfully requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to OUR PLACE, the SOCIAL CLUB, 1450 Potters Blvd., Bay Shore, NY 11706. The wake and Funeral services will be held Tuesday, June 21, 2005, at the First Baptist Church of Bay Shore, 175 Second Avenue, Bay Shore, NY 11706. Wake will be 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM.
