He served in both the U.S. Navy during WWII, and the U.S. Army in Korea. He was volunteer chairman for many years of the Nassau/Suffolk County Emergency Medical Services Committee, organizing ambulance services, introducing cardiac monitoring of patients and training its AMT's and EMT's. Survivors include six children with his first wife Harriet Heffernan Calvelli, who predeceased him in 1981: Helen, Patricia, Gina, John, Mary Ross and Cara; his second wife Jacqueline Burke Calvelli and her two children; Janet Burke and Eileen Mirchel; sister Mary Prendergast, brother Richard Calvelli, 12 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild and many nieces and nephews.
