Rose was born in Harlem, NY and grew up in the area often referred to as "Strivers Row." She was born on June 6, 1922 to the parents of Wilson and Rita Kenney. She was a long time resident of Sag Harbor, NY until moving to Hampton, VA in 2003. Rose was the eldest of four siblings. While living in Sag Harbor, NY, Rose belonged to Christ Episcopal Church. She was a highly regarded member of the East Enders, Sag Harbor Hills Improvement Association and the local AARP. While living in Hampton, VA, she became a communicant of St. Cyprian's Episcopal Church in Hampton, VA. She also participated in many activities at the James River Convalescent Center. She leaves to cherish her memory: daughter Beverley Taylor-Diggs and husband Lawrence, her son, Woody Dorsey and his wife Teresa; her five grandchildren and their spouses; Shaw and Angela Taylor, Michelle and John Young, Eric and Cherice Taylor, Bryan Dorsey and Kimberley Artis; six great-grandchildren; Christian and Cory Royal, Aaron, Johnathan, Christopher and Nicholas Taylor. VARAS-John B., Sr., 69, formerly of Massapequa Park, Long Island, passed away March 29, 2005, in Orlando, FL after a valiant battle with cancer. He was a Lieutenant with the New York City Police Department and retired in 1989 after 29 years. He was a member of St. Brendan's Catholic Church in Ormond Beach, The loyal order of Moose Lodge #1263 and the fraternal order of Eagles Lodge Aerie # 3800 where he served as an officer. John was an avid bowler, but his passion was the sport of soccer where he was an advocate in the advancement of women in soccer. Playing as a young man, he eventually realized that he could give back to the sport he loved by becoming a coach. He coached various age groups both boys and girls at all levels from beginner to college level. As a coach he quickly realized that there was also a need for officials in the sport, upon which he became a referee and officiated in both amateur and professional games. He eventually retired and became a national level assessor, traveling the country to help others master their refereeing skills. John also took time to mentor anyone who was willing to go the extra mile to become the best. He will be greatly missed, and is survived by his wife Mary, son John, Jr. (Kerri), daughters Mary (Brian) Reece, Margie (Ken) Tegge, Jean (Heather), grandchildren Tyler, John Philip (J.P.), Cheyenne, Shannon and Sierra, brothers Bob (Nancy), Alex, Jr. (Bonita), sisters Aida Rivera and Peggy Gutierrez.
