Cappel, Milton CAPPEL-Milton, a long-time resident of Glen Cove, passed away on October 4, 2005 as a result of complications of a brief illness. He was 82. Mr. Cappel moved to Glen Cove from the Bronx in 1947, deciding that this cozy bedroom community would be the perfect place for him and his wife Gloria to settle and start a family that eventually came to include 5 children. An avid horticulturist, Mr. Cappel enjoyed an excellent reputation in the community and beyond. In 1964, Mr. Cappel was chosen as the Grounds Superintendent for The New York Worlds Fair. He was personally responsible for the design, production, and maintenance of many of the memorable landscape displays at The Fair. Active in the community, Mr. Cappel gave his time freely to various causes including B'nai B'rith, the Men's Club of Congregation Tifereth Israel, as well as the High Holiday Choir. He also donated his services to the Glen Cove Police Department, aiding them in his capacity as an experienced Beekeeper. Glen Cove's Finest would call upon him when a distressed resident called them to report a swarm of bees. Mr. Cappel's first wife, Gloria, passed away in 1985. His second wife, Caroline, passed away in 1997. Among his many loving survivors are his long-time companion Frances Fresco of W. Palm Beach, FL.; four children, Jeffrey M. Cappel of West Palm Beach, Fl, Eugene F. Cappel of Stuart, Fl, Maxine Cappel Mayreis DC (Dean), of Glen Cove, and Eva Lynn Jones (James), also of Glen Cove. Hawthorne, Dorothea Jean (Mulhern) HAWTHORNE-Dorothea Jean (nee Mulhern), 87, of Lynbrook, New York and Apopka, Florida, passed away on her birthday, Tuesday, October 4, 2005 at her new home in Cary, North Carolina. She is preceded by her loving husband of 60 years, Walter Harold Hawthorne, and survived by their three daughters: Kathryn Silverstein (Harvey) of Halifax, Nova Scotia; Wendy Greenberg of Great Neck, NY; Barbara Shannon (John) of Cary, NC; and seven grandchildren; Danielle, Adam & Tamara Siverstein, Kevin Greenberg, and Kaitlyn, Christopher and Sarah Shannon. Born on October 4, 1918 in Lynbrook, Dorothea was an exceptional student at Lynbrook High School where she met her future husband, Walter, when she was asked to tutor him in Math. After graduating from secretarial school she worked in New York City and eventually served a the Administrative Assistant to the President of Asiatic Oil (Shell). She married Walter on April 21, 1945 after he returned from active duty in World War II. After the birth of her first child, Dorothea stayed home to raise their three outstanding daughters. Always active in her community, she volunteered in the schools, the East Rockaway Library and her church. Dorothea and Walter moved to Apopka, FL in 1980 where they traveled, played golf (she had a hole-in-one) and enjoyed great friends. The Hawthornes recently moved to Cary to be closer to their family. Dorothea will remembered as a devoted wife, loving mother, adoring grandmother, and faithful friend. She was a strong and beautiful woman.
