Wershba, Samuel WERSHBA-Samuel, passed away in Boca Raton, FL, on October 15, 2005, two days short of his 90th birthday. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Elaine, his sister Blanche Stone, of CA, sons, Martin Wershba of Charleston, WV, Emil Bernstein of Newton, MA, Jerold Wershba of Portland, OR, daughter, Susan Zerin of Buffalo Grove, IL, eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by daughter, Linda Clarke; sisters, Anne Wallis and Esther Weinberg, and wife Ruth (1958). An early pioneer in the field of avionics, Sam established the first facility for aircraft radio electronics at LaGuardia and JFK Airports. Sam taught aircraft maintenance to World War II personnel and was instrumental in the establishment of the fledgling Israeli Air Force and El Al. Always cognizant of his own roots, Sam hired and sponsored numerous immigrants who sought the American dream. For many years he serviced Air Force One. His firm was acquired by AAR and he acted as Vice President and Director for the remainder of his career, running various operations in the U.S.A., Europe, and Asia. Sam was a man of drive and determination who firmly believed in the ability of a person to make his own way in our society by virtue of hard work and good moral character. The hardships of the Great Depression reinforced his motivation for education and productivity. Rather than seeking out personal pleasures, he and his wife, Elaine, assured that all five of their children received college and post graduate educations. Sam enjoyed tennis, golf, playing gin rummy and bridge with friends, visits with family, and gardening at his home in Florida. He had a long life and experienced great changes in the way we live and work. In his own words, "Our wealth is measured in happiness. Stay happy. I love all of my family." He will be missed and remembered by many. Donations in Sam's memory may be made to the American Heart Association, 9900 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Street N., St. Petersburg, FL 33716-3801.
