A few days previously he suffered a stroke of paralysis and gradually sank into the last sleep. The funeral was held at 1:30 P.M., Wednesday, March 6th at the M.E. church in Granada, conducted by Rev. Ferris, and burial made in the Granada cemetery. Mr. Garrison was a native of New York, where he was born Jan. 7, 1831. In 1857 he came west to Marquette county, Wisconsin, remaining there until 1860, when for a short time he was a resident of Faribault county, Minn. He then returned to Buffalo, N.Y., where he was married in 1862 to Miss Ellen Russell. In 1863 he again returned to Minnesota and the following years took up land in Pleasant Prairie township and has ever since been a resident of this county. Mr. Garrison enlisted in the Union army in 1864 in a regiment of Minnesota volunteers and served with credit until the close of the war between the states. On May 21, 1893, the buildings on his farm were destroyed by a cyclone, which is but a single instance of the hardships endured by the pioneers of this county who paved the way for its present prosperity. Mr. Garrison was one of the very earliest of the permanent settlers and witnessed the transformation of the prairie wilderness into a rich agricultural community. He was a carpenter by trade and during his active years erected many of the buildings in the east part of the county. Mr. Garrison was the father of five sons, Clinton, Clarence, George, Fred and Frank and two daughters, Mrs. Ed. Schleininger of Granada, and Mrs. Emma Dunn of Sauk Center, Minn. All were present at the funeral except George, who resides in Beltrami county. Mr. Garrison's first wife departed this life in January, 1909. In October, 1910, he married Mrs. James Bennett who survives him. Mr. Garrison was a man of the highest integrity and a citizen whose efforts were always directed toward the upbuilding of the community. As a soldier, a pioneer an honest man he is held in reverent memory by the entire community.
