Trumansburg Advertiser (Tompkins Co., NY), July 5, 1837 pg.2, col.2
"Sudden Death!!  -- It becomes our painful duty to record the sudden and unexpected
death of Mr. John Porter, an aged resident of this town.  He came to this village 
yesterday, for the purpose of joining with his fellow citizens in celebrating the
day [4th of July], and while partaking of dinner at the Union House expired
without a groan! Medical assistance was immediately called; but to no avail.  
He died in a fit of apoplexy."
