INDIAN LAKE -- Arthur V. Austin, 66, of Gundel Court, passed away Monday, April 4, 2005, at Glens Falls Hospital. He was born March 26, 1939, in Minerva, to the late Howard and Grace (Rounds) Austin. Besides his parents, three brothers, Clarence, George and Gilbert, and an infant sister, have also predeceased him. Survivors include his three sisters, Agnes Edinger and Frances Hutchins of Indian Lake, and Doris Bushman of Texas; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. "Chris" Benton, 46, of Cheyenne, Wyo., died Monday, March 28, 2005, in Cheyenne. He was born Dec. 16, 1958, in Glens Falls, and had lived in Cheyenne, Wyo. for the past 11 years. Mr. Benton served in the U.S. Navy. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Foster Parents Program, and he performed with the Cheyenne Little Theatre. Mr. Benton is survived by his wife, Laurie Benton of Cheyenne, Wyo.; eight sons: Nicholas Benton and Alexander Benton, both of Florida, Jacob Ausban and Kirk Ausban, both of California, and Christopher Benton II, Cory Benton, David Ausban and Kraig Ausban, all of Cheyenne, Wyo.; five daughters: Brittany Benton and Kelly Ausban, both of Cheyenne, Racheal Benton of Florida, and Katie Ausban and Wendy Wigger, both of California; two foster children, Richard Johnson and Samantha Heines; his father, Clifford Benton of Vermont; two brothers, Jonathan Benton of Georgia and Jerome Benton of Texas; and three sisters, Sara Andra and Daphne Drewes, both of California, and Jackie Pead of Utah. He was preceded in death by his mother, Cynthia O. Benton. Birdsall, Catherine Welsh QUEENSBURY -- Catherine Welsh Birdsall of Queensbury, passed away Tuesday, April 5, 2005. Born Sept. 12, 1904, in Albany, she was the daughter of George Welsh Jr. and Alice (Gick) Welsh. She was educated in Albany schools and Smith College, Northampton, Mass. Katie, as she was affectionately called by those who knew her, and her late husband, Stephen T. Birdsall were longtime residents of Glens Falls and active members of the community. Mrs. Birdsall was a member of the Glens Falls Hospital Guild from 1933 to the present, a trustee and past president of the Glens Falls Home for Women. She also served on the Board of Trustees of the Hyde Collection, and was a founding member of Hyde Collection Council, serving as a docent until she was well into her 90s. She was also active in the Lake George Garden Club and the Glens Falls Country Club. Katie was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Glens Falls. As a member of the Historic Society of Early American Design, she did many trays and country tin pieces, either free hand or stenciled, which are cherished by her family. Mrs. Birdsall is survived by two sons, Weston F. Cowles of Rensselaer and George W. Cowles of Somers, N.Y.; a daughter, Kate B. Duffy of Barre, Vt.; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister, Mrs. Alice W. Ashby of Brookview, N.Y.; one niece and two nephews. A memorial service will be scheduled and announced at a later date. Bruce, Sister Jane MARYKNOLL Sisters Center, Maryknoll, N.Y. -- Sister Jane Bruce, M.M., 78, died peacefully Saturday, April 2, 2005, at Maryknoll Sisters Center, Maryknoll, after a brief illness. Born Jan. 16, 1927, she was the daughter of the late Arthur and Elsie Yarter Bruce of Hudson Falls. She attended St. Mary's School of Hudson Falls, and in 1944, she graduated as Valedictorian of her class at Hudson Falls High School. After high school, she joined the Maryknoll Sisters near Ossining, a Catholic missionary order, with the hope and desire to contribute in some way to making the world a more just and peaceful place. She always felt that "all together we can make a difference, as can everyone of good will." She attended Manhattanville College in New York City and the Catholic University in Washington, D.C., where she obtained her Master's degree in Social Work in 1952. After serving five years in Chicago Catholic Charities, she ministered in Hawaii Catholic Charities in Honolulu for 30 years. Upon retirement, she returned to the Maryknoll Center in New York, where she continued to assist the personnel and Social Service departments of the Maryknoll Nursing Home. In 2004, she commemorated 60 years of mission ministry. She is survived by her brother and sisters: John and Dolores Bruce of Rochester, Joan Winchell of Honolulu, Hawaii and Rolando and Ann de Avila of Queensbury. Survivors also include many cherished nieces and nephews; and many dear friends. A funeral service will be held at the Maryknoll Sisters Center, Maryknoll, on Friday, April 8, at 11 a.m. Burial will be in the private Maryknoll Cemetery. Chadwick, Agnes (Wilcox) GLENS FALLS -- Agnes (Wilcox) Chadwick, 86, of Cronin High Rise, passed away Monday, April 4, 2005, at Glens Falls Hospital, following a courageous battle with cancer. Born June 27, 1918, in Newcomb, she was the daughter of John and Helena (Busch) Wilcox. Mrs. Chadwick graduated from Glens Falls High School, Class of 1938. She married Quentin B. Chadwick in July of 1945, in Glens Falls. Mrs. Chadwick was a communicant of St. Mary's Catholic Church of Glens Falls. She and her husband relocated to Lake Placid, where they resided for over 20 years. Both were avid golfers and were members of the Craig Wood Country Club of Lake Placid. Mrs. Chadwick was also a member of the Telephone Pioneers. Mr. and Mrs. Chadwick were volunteers at the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, where she assisted on the luge. They were very proud to have traveled and toured all 50 states in the U.S.A. and all of the Canadian Provinces. Besides their enjoyment of golf, other sports activities included cross-country skiing and bowling. Mrs. Chadwick was predeceased by her husband, Quentin B. Chadwick; two sisters, Elvern F. Barnes and Marcia H. Sullivan; two brothers, Nicholas and Marshall Wilcox; one niece, Colleen Hogan; and one nephew, Kevin O'Neil. Survivors include one sister, Vera O'Neil of Glens Falls; five nieces: Elaine Kane and her husband, Jim, of Fort Edward, Eloise O'Neil of Tucson, Ariz., Peg Wilcox of Florida, Kay Myers and her husband, Bob, of Granville, and Colleen M. Sullivan of Queensbury; two nephews, Michael Sullivan of Queensbury and John Wilcox of South Glens Falls; and several great-nieces and great-nephews; and many cousins. Burial will be later in the spring at St. Therese Cemetery, Newcomb. No public calling hours are scheduled at Mrs. Chadwick's request. Fish, Ruth LAKE LUZERNE -- Ruth Fish, age 82, of Hyland Drive, died Monday evening, April 4, 2005, at Albany Medical Center. Born on Sept. 23, 1922, in Whitehall, she was the daughter of Roy and Mary Tillotson. She was a graduate of Hudson Falls High School. Ruth married Robert Fish on July 3, 1940. Mr. Fish died in 1992, following 52 loving years of marriage. In 1994, Ruth moved to Lake Luzerne to be closer to her son, John and his family. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Lake Luzerne, where she participated in Bible study, church dinners and as a "Sunshine Lady," making sure members of the church received cards for special occasions. Ruth enjoyed gardening, especially her flower garden. She also enjoyed cross stitching and quilting. She was a member of the "Quilting Cuties." She was predeceased by her parents, her husband, and three sisters, Gladys, Beulah and Dorothy. Survivors include three sons, Robert Fish of Fort Edward, John Fish and his wife, Debbie, of Lake Luzerne, and Richard Fish; one sister, Myrtle Eames of Canandaigua; one brother, Edwin Merriman of Canandaigua; eight grandchildren: Christine, Sherry, Karen, April, Tabitha, Ralph, Nathaniel and Christopher; a very special niece, Judy LaRock of Fort Edward, as well as many other nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews. Haas, Irene (Holdridge) PICKERINGTON, Ohio -- Irene (Holdridge) Haas of Pickerington, Ohio, died Friday, April 1, 2005, at Winchester Place Nursing Home. Born Dec. 1, 1922, in South Cairo, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Charles and Ethel (Perry) Holdridge. She has been a resident of Pickerington, Ohio for five years. She retired as secretary to the International Brotherhood of Teamsters Local Union No. 232 in Fort Edward in December 1987, after 34 years of service. She was formerly a member of Fort Edward Chapter No. 372, O.E.S. and Battle Hill Chapter No. 260. Irene was a past District Deputy Grand Matron of the Warren-Washington District O.E.S., serving in 1977. Her husband, Lester, died on Feb. 25, 1998. Survivors include two daughters, Rhonda Clark and her husband, Ted, of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Cindy Frobel and her husband, Paul, of Pickerington, Ohio; three grandchildren: Meghan, Andrew and Heidi Frobel of Pickerington, Ohio; a brother, Floyd Holdridge and his wife, Helen, of Catskill; a sister, Hilda Rogers and her husband, Tom, of Cairo, N.Y.; a niece, and two nephews. Porter, 87, of Newcomb, passed away peacefully, Sunday, April 3, 2005, at Moses-Ludington Nursing Home in Ticonderoga, following a long illness. Born on Jan. 14, 1918, in Olmstedville, she was the daughter of the late Henry J. and Margurite (Gallagher) McNally. Following her graduation from high school, Doris married Frank R. Porter of North Creek on April 13, 1942, in Olmstedville. Her husband, Frank, passed away on Oct. 14, 2001. During her earlier years, Doris worked as a cook at various locations in the Adirondacks, including Adirondack Hotel in Long Lake. Doris was a longtime member of St. Therese's Catholic Church of Newcomb, and a member of the Catholic Daughters of America. She enjoyed camping and was well-known for her dinner rolls. She also enjoyed watching birds, and caring for her cats. In addition to her husband of 59 years, Doris was predeceased by her brother, Arthur McNally. Survivors include one son, James F. Porter and his fiancee, Michelle Demers, of Hudson, N.Y; one daughter, Diane LaCourse and her husband, Craig, of Hague; five sisters: Mildred Barnum of Niagara Falls; Jean Lucas and her husband, Steve, of Rome, N.Y.; Helen Reynolds and her husband, T. Ritchie, 68, of 136 Aiken Road, Middle Granville, hearing the Lord calling to him, "Well done, thou good and faithful servant, come home," crossed the river and ascended into heaven into the loving arms of God, to receive his final reward of eternal salvation from Jesus Christ, on Monday, April 4, 2005, surrounded by his loving family and friends. Art was born in Granville, on Jan. 15, 1937, the son of John and Florence (Farrar) Ritchie. On June 10, 1961, Arthur married Sherry Hicks, and they resided in Middle Granville their entire lives. He was a farmer, truck driver, foreman at Ritchie Brothers Slate Co. Inc., and, since 1997, pastor of the Raceville United Methodist Church. Art was a very loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, who loved to spend time with family and friends. Our cherished memories of him include special family events, riding with him in his big rig, singing gospel music with his daughter, special time at the waterfall with his granddaughter, and watching his grandson play sports. Art loved the Lord and singing gospel music, and was a member of the men's quartet "The Solid Rock Singers" for 15 years. He loved visiting hospitals and nursing homes, and ministering to those in need. He loved watching NASCAR racing and playing basketball. His greatest happiness was found in serving the Lord and His people, sharing the Lord with others and leading them to the Savior. He was truly a kind, loving and gentle man, unselfish, nonjudgmental, a great comforter and friend. His strength came from the Lord, his solid rock. Each person who knew him was forever touched by his humbleness, sincerity and love. His strong faith never wavered and peace was his. Scarchilli, Sr. 85, of Hillis Terrace in Poughkeepsie, died Monday, April 4, 2005, at Vassar Brothers Hospital in Poughkeepsie, following a long illness. Raymond was born Dec. 8, 1919, in Poughkeepsie, the son of the late Phyllis and Augusto Scarchilli. He graduated from Poughkeepsie High School in 1937. Ray married A. Julia Spadaro on April 12, 1942. He was a communicant of St. Mary's Church in Wappingers Falls. Ray worked as a supervisor at Sedgwick Machine Works for many years. He was an avid Yankees fan, who had a great passion for baseball and his favorite player, Joe DiMaggio. He coached for the Poughkeepsie Little League and served as its president for one year. Ray greatly enjoyed bowling, and bowled in leagues for several years. He enjoyed the sport of golfing as well. Ray's greatest love was for his family, his wife, his children and their spouses, as well as his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was particularly fond of spending holidays and vacations with his family. Besides his parents, Ray was predeceased by his brothers, Angelo and Victor Scarchilli. Ray is survived by his wife, Julia; his son, Raymond A. Scarchilli Jr. of Poughkeepsie; his daughters, Valerie Leone and her husband, Dan, of Framingham, Mass., Mary Ann Puricelli and her husband, Peter, of Queensbury, Susanne Scarchilli of Poughkeepsie, and Jane Nienstadt and her husband, Paul, of Washingtonville. Searles, 69, was called to the Lord, peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Monday, April 4, 2005, at Glens Falls Hospital. Born June 22, 1935, in Cleveland, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Reginald T. and Muriel E. (Jones) Lucas. Muriel was a graduate of Crown Point Central School, Class of 1953, and attended Adirondack Community College, and received a diploma as a teachers aid. She was employed as a teachers aid at North Warren Central School for 17 years, retiring in 1990. Muriel was an active member of Chestertown Community United Methodist Church, a former member of the bowling league, Ladies Twilight Golf League and a member of the Easter Star. She enjoyed camping, traveling to visit the many Light Houses along the east coast. She especially enjoyed spending time with her family and grandchildren. She will be remembered as a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She is survived by her husband of 49 years, James B. Searles of Chestertown. They were married on Aug. 14, 1955, in the Port Henry United Methodist Church. She is also survived by two sons, William Searles of Chestertown and Thomas Searles and his wife Cheryl, of Rincon, Ga.; three daughters, Willa Searles of Chestertown, Robin Searles and her partner, Jill Iocolano, of Auburn, and Pamela Crossman and her husband, Jack, of Chestertown; nine grandchildren: Mark Rodford, John Crossman, Chelsey Crossman, Michael Searles, Anthony Searles, Billy Barrett, Melissa Barrett, Joshua Searles, and Rebekah Searles; one brother, William T. Sullivan, Mary "Anna" SOUTH GLENS FALLS -- Mary "Anna" Sullivan, 81, passed away on Tuesday, April 5, 2005, at Glens Falls Hospital following a short illness. Born on Nov. 27, 1923, in Luzerne, she was the daughter of Augustus and Mary Elizabeth (McGroty) Whible Sr. Mary was a graduate of St. Mary's Academy and a 25-year employee at the Joy Store in South Glens Falls. She was a member of the Historical Society of South Glens Falls, the Garden Club, the American Legion Auxiliary Post 553 and a member for 35 years of the Eagles Post No. 2486. Mary was a lifetime member of St. Michael the Archangel Church in South Glens Falls, where she was a member of the Rosary Alter Society. She enjoyed baking for everyone, would do anything for anyone and enjoyed doing crafts, especially making May baskets. Family was always Mary's number one priority. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, John J. Sullivan I, a grandson, Jeffrey Sullivan; and twin infant grandsons. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m., on Friday, April 8, at St. Michael the Archangel Church, 80 Saratoga Ave., South Glens Falls. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery in South Glens Falls. Family and friends are invited and may call from 4 to 7 p.m., on Thursday, April 7, at Regan & Denny Funeral Home, 94 Saratoga Ave., South Glens Falls. Published in the Post-Star on 4/6/2005. Supe, Alice M. HUDSON FALLS -- Alice M. Supe, 92, died peacefully on Monday, March 21, 2005, at Pleasant Valley Infirmary in Argyle. Born Alice Arnold Irwin on Jan. 23, 1913, at Curwensville, Pa., she was the daughter of Jesse and Maria Irwin, and was subsequently adopted by John and Sadie B. Mahaffey. She was a professional singer in her early life, having her own radio show in Clearfield, Pa. Later in her life she was an executive secretary, and a medical secretary. Alice sung in the choir at St. Mary's/St. Paul's Church in Hudson Falls. She was a member of the Third Order of Saint Francis. Besides her natural and adoptive parents, she was predeceased by her former husband, David Supe; and by her brothers and sisters, Lucilla Irwin Way, Lulu Lenora Irwin Bloom, Daniel C. Irwin, Thomas C. Irwin, Violet Irwin Carnes, Jack M. Irwin, and Robert Ralph Irwin. She was a descendant of Robert and Hannah Way. Survivors include her son, Alfred Supe and his wife, Judith, and their sons, Michael Supe and his wife, Charlotte, Stephen Supe and his wife, Amy, Robert Supe and his wife, Andrea, Matthew Supe, and Andrew Supe, as well as four great-grandchildren, Heather, Melissa, Ansley, and Jacob; and several great-great-grandchildren. She donated her body to medical research at Albany Medical College. A memorial service will be held later at the convenience of the family. Published in the Post-Star on 4/6/2005.
