Born Sept. 11, 1914, in Granville, he was the son of Edgar and Edith (Howe) Aldous. He was a farmer and enjoyed doing electrical work. Mr. Aldous was predeceased by his wife of 61 years, Mildred (Dekalb) Aldous. He was also predeceased by two sisters, Lena Morehouse and Helen Denton; and one brother, Franklin Aldous. Survivors include two sons and their wives, Edgar and Fuzzy Aldous of Granville, and Roger and Joyce Aldous of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; five daughters and their husbands: Sharon and Don Dekalb of Granville, Donna and Mark Landon and Joanne and Chuck Dutcher, all of Hartford, Dale and Bill Strouse of Milton, Fla., Gail and Jeff Gillis of Argyle; two brothers, Fredrick and Milton Aldous; three sisters: Edith Tatko, Marion Braymer, and Ruth Washburne; 17 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday at Robert M. King Funeral Home, 23 Church St., Granville, with pastor Kenneth Prater of Durkeetown Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be at North Granville Cemetery. No calling hours will be scheduled. Balton, Gregg John GLENS FALLS -- Gregg John Balton, 44, general manager of the Gideon Putnam Hotel in Saratoga Springs, died Monday evening, April 4, 2005, after a long battle with melanoma. Gregg was born on Oct. 21, 1960, in Jersey City, N.J., to August and the late Angela Balton. His distinguished career began at The Sagamore resort, where he rose to become director of sales and marketing. In 1998, he was a graduate of the ARCC Leadership Adirondack. While at the Gideon Putnam he supervised a major restoration, and was on the Board of Directors of Historic Hotels of America. Gregg was an ardent musician, and was the bass player in two bands, The Houseguests and Cold Shot. He was a member of the Lake George Club, and in 1992, he married his wife, the former Sarah Slaughter, on the main dock there. Besides his wife, Gregg leaves two young children, Olivia, 8, and Jack, 5. He is also survived by his brothers, Joe, Jeffrey, and Mark; and many beloved nieces and nephews. His father, August, resides in California. Dr. and Mrs. Michael Slaughter are Sarah's parents. Birdsall, Catherine Welsh QUEENSBURY -- Catherine Welsh Birdsall of Queensbury passed away Tuesday, April 5, 2005. Born Sept. 12, 1904, in Albany, she was the daughter of George Welsh Jr. and Alice (Gick) Welsh. She was educated in Albany schools and Smith College, Northampton, Mass. Katie, as she was affectionately called by those who knew her, and her late husband, Stephen T. Birdsall, were longtime residents of Glens Falls and active members of the community. Mrs. Birdsall was a member of the Glens Falls Hospital Guild from 1933 to the present, a trustee and past president of the Glens Falls Home for Women. She also served on the Board of Trustees of the Hyde Collection, and was a founding member of Hyde Collection Council, serving as a docent until she was well into her 90s. She was also active in the Lake George Garden Club and the Glens Falls Country Club. Katie was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Glens Falls. As a member of the Historic Society of Early American Design, she did many trays and country tin pieces, either free hand or stenciled, which are cherished by her family. Mrs. Birdsall is survived by two sons, Weston F. Cowles of Rensselaer and George W. Cowles of Somers, N.Y.; a daughter, Kate B. Duffy of Barre, Vt.; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister, Mrs. Alice W. Ashby of Brookview, N.Y.; one niece and two nephews. A memorial service will be scheduled and announced at a later date. Boice, Clayton Stewart EAGLE BRIDGE -- Clayton Stewart Boice, 63, of Rice Lane, died Wednesday, April 6, 2005, at South Western Vermont Medical Center after a long illness. He was the husband of Dorothy Hansen Boice. Born on Monday, April 28, 1941, in Shushan, he was the youngest child of the late Dallas Boice and Helen Brown Boice Harrington, now residing in Bennington. He grew up in Shushan before living in Cambridge, and most recently, Eagle Bridge. He and Dorothy were married July 11, 1964. Clayton worked as a cutter in several local textile mills including Reis Mills in Cambridge and K and H Products in North Bennington, from where he retired. He enjoyed painting, gardening, woodworking, spending time with his family, and he loved to sing. Along with his wife, he is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Heath and Natalie Boice-Pardee of Hamilton, N.J.; a granddaughter, Katherine Boice-Pardee; four siblings and their spouses, Helene and Phil Sica of Cambridge, Charles and Lois Boice of Argyle, Lillian Rehn of Shushan, and Marshall and Ruffle Boice of Salem; and many nieces and nephews. Caldwell Sr., 73, of Hillside Avenue, died Wednesday, April 6, 2005, at his home following a long illness, surrounded by his loving family. Born on Jan. 21, 1932, in Lake Luzerne, he was the son of the late James Sr. and Beatrice (Harris) Caldwell. Mr. Caldwell attended school in Lake Luzerne. He joined the United States Army on April 14, 1952, serving as a corporal during the Korean War, and fought on the front lines in Korea. He received the Korean Service Medal with one Bronze Star, the Combat Infantry Badge, and several other awards. Following his discharge, he married Betty J. Hedger on July 3, 1955, in Lake Luzerne. The couple resided in Greenfield for many years, and have lived in South Corinth for the past seven years. Mr. Caldwell was employed at the International Paper Co. in Corinth in the finishing department for 39 years until his retirement in 1994. While at IP, he served in the United Papermakers Union for many years in several offices, including president, vice-president and financial secretary. Mr. Caldwell also worked part time with his father-in-law, Oscar Hedger, as a carpenter and mason. He enjoyed country music and bluegrass, gardening and spending time with all his grandchildren. Besides his parents, two sisters, Addie Walker and Dorothy Hull; and four brothers, James Caldwell Jr., George Caldwell, Donald Caldwell, and Robert Caldwell, all died before him. Survivors besides his wife of 50 years include two sons, Frederick A. Caldwell Jr. and his wife, Joyce, of Greenfield Center, and Glen Caldwell and his companion, Cathy, of Schenectady; three daughters, Kathy Smith and her fiance, Al Pinn, of Corinth, Sue Wood and her husband, Frank, of Corinth, and Wendy Huelette and her husband, Mike, of Ballston Spa; one sister, Marge Palmer of Round Lake; one brother, Roy Caldwell and his wife, Brenda, of Lake Luzerne; 18 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Fox, Caroline Robinson GLENS FALLS -- Caroline Robinson Fox, 88 years old, of Pilot Knob, passed away on Saturday, March 26, 2005, at her winter home in Panama City Beach, Fla. Born on April 5, 1916, in Glens Falls, she was the daughter of the late Albert G. and Gertrude (Bullard) Robinson. She was a graduate of Glens Falls High School and the University of Wisconsin. Delmar was the place they lived before relocating to Lake George. She was a member of the United Methodist Church. Caroline was predeceased in death by her husband, Leighton E. Fox of Glens Falls; one sister, Mary Piper Knauss; and a brother, Albert J. Robinson. Survivors include her twin sister, Eunice R. McLaughlin, and another sister, Phyllis Olso Wheatlake. She is also survived by a daughter, Eunice F. Hamlin of Duncanville, Texas; a son, John E. Fox of Germantown, Tenn.; a son, Philip E. MORRISVILLE, Vt./ MINERVA -- Shirley M. Mason, 80, of Morrisville, Vt./Minerva died peacefully Tuesday, April 5, 2005, at Genesis Eldercare in Morrisville. Born Dec. 9, 1924, in North Cambridge, she was the daughter of Earl H. and Ethel Barker Sweet. She was the valedictorian of the Cambridge High School, Class of 1942, and a member of the basketball team. She was a graduate of Burlington Business College. Shirley worked as a teller at Union Bank and had been employed by the law office of Andrew Halloran in North Creek for a number of years. She was a member of the Home Demonstration Club in Morrisville, was an avid bowler and loved to play bingo. Shirley is survived by her son, Michael (Lorenda) Dunham of Johnson; four grandchildren: Emily, Mitchel, Chelsea, and Abigail Dunham; two stepdaughters, Myrna (John) Martell of Swanton and Deanna (Dale) Gonyea of New York; brothers: Arlan Sweet of Jeffersonville, Ray (Esther) Sweet of Fletcher, Guy (Margaret) Sweet of West Enosburg; and a sister, Arlie (Marvin) Williamson of Jeffersonville. Pertgen, Arthur L. HUDSON FALLS -- Arthur L. Pertgen, 61, of Denis Avenue, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, April 5, 2005, at Glens Falls Hospital. Born on May 6, 1943, in New York City, he was the son of the late Phillip and Dorothy (Lenox-Howe) Pertgen. Art graduated from Ichabod Crane High School in Valatie and also from Hudson Valley Community College in Troy, where he earned an associate of science degree in electrical engineering. He served his country in the National Guard. On Jan. 27, 1968, he married Paulette Kaczmarek at St. George Episcopal Church in Schenectady. Art was currently working at Native Textiles in Glens Falls as the plant engineer. Through his career, he worked at Valcor in Glens Falls, General Electric in Fort Edward, Chase Bag, formerly in Moreau, and Union Camp in Glens Falls. His membership in the Zion Episcopal Church in Hudson Falls was a very important part of his life. He served his church as an usher, vestryman, senior warden, choir member and chalice bearer. Other affiliations included: the Burgoyne Avenue PTA of Hudson Falls Central School; the Hudson Falls Girls Softball League as coach of his daughter's team and league president; the Hudson Falls Little League as a coach; Boy Scout Troop 56 of Hudson Falls as a scoutmaster; the Free and Accepted Order of Masons Hudson Falls Chapter; the town of Fort Edward Planning Board and CEASE. Art enjoyed motorcycling, boating on Lake George and camping with his wife, Paulette. He also spent many hours hunting, pistol shooting and relaxing by the fireplace and around his new backyard fish pond. Survivors include his wife of 37 years, Paulette Y. Born on Aug. 20, 1930, in Glens Falls, she was the daughter of Timothy J. and Helen (McGarr) Mulcahy. Mrs. Peters graduated from Glens Falls High School in 1948. She married Albert Lawrence Peters on June 12, 1949. Mrs. Peters was a longtime employee of South Glens Falls Schools, retiring after 26 years of service. She was an avid dog lover, devoted to her family and friends. She will be remembered for her sense of humor, wisdom and as she would say, "having the nine lives of a cat." During her long illness, she enjoyed the support and loving kindness of her children and friends. Mrs. Peters was predeceased by her beloved husband, Albert L. Peters; and her son, David M. Peters. Porter, 87, of Newcomb, passed away peacefully, Sunday, April 3, 2005, at Moses-Ludington Nursing Home in Ticonderoga, following a long illness. Born on Jan. 14, 1918, in Olmstedville, she was the daughter of the late Henry J. and Margurite (Gallagher) McNally. Following her graduation from high school, Doris married Frank R. Porter of North Creek on April 13, 1942, in Olmstedville. Her husband, Frank, passed away on Oct. 14, 2001. During her earlier years, Doris worked as a cook at various locations in the Adirondacks, including Adirondack Hotel in Long Lake. Doris was a longtime member of St. Therese's Catholic Church of Newcomb, and a member of the Catholic Daughters of America. She enjoyed camping and was well-known for her dinner rolls. She also enjoyed watching birds, and caring for her cats. In addition to her husband of 59 years, Doris was predeceased by her brother, Arthur McNally. Survivors include one son, James F. Ritchie, 68, of 136 Aiken Road, Middle Granville, hearing the Lord calling to him, "Well done, thou good and faithful servant, come home," crossed the river and ascended into heaven into the loving arms of God, to receive his final reward of eternal salvation from Jesus Christ, on Monday, April 4, 2005, surrounded by his loving family and friends. Art was born in Granville, on Jan. 15, 1937, the son of John and Florence (Farrar) Ritchie. On June 10, 1961, Arthur married Sherry Hicks, and they resided in Middle Granville their entire lives. He was a farmer, truck driver, foreman at Ritchie Brothers Slate Co. Inc., and, since 1997, pastor of the Raceville United Methodist Church. Art was a very loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, who loved to spend time with family and friends. Our cherished memories of him include special family events, riding with him in his big rig, singing gospel music with his daughter, special time at the waterfall with his granddaughter, and watching his grandson play sports. Art loved the Lord and singing gospel music, and was a member of the men's quartet "The Solid Rock Singers" for 15 years. He loved visiting hospitals and nursing homes, and ministering to those in need. He loved watching NASCAR racing and playing basketball. His greatest happiness was found in serving the Lord and His people, sharing the Lord with others and leading them to the Savior. He was truly a kind, loving and gentle man, unselfish, nonjudgmental, a great comforter and friend. His strength came from the Lord, his solid rock. Each person who knew him was forever touched by his humbleness, sincerity and love. His strong faith never wavered and peace was his. Born on July 5, 1921, in Whitehall, he was the son of the late Frederick and Elizabeth (Doty) Whalen. He retired from the Delaware & Hudson Railroad as a trainman. He was a member of the United Transportation Union. He was also a Third Degree member of the Knights of Columbus, Council No. 276 of Whitehall. Mr. Whalen was an avid sports fan and enjoyed playing golf, watching sports on television and taking short trips in his car. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by two brothers, Raymond Whalen and Peter Whalen; two infant brothers, Robert Whalen and Terry Whalen; two sisters, Dorothy Whalen and Gladys Lortie; and two grandsons, Garrett Whalen and Cameron Whalen. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Carol J. (Toulman) Whalen of Whitehall, whom he wed on June 12, 1944, at Our Lady of Angels Church; two sons, John F. Whalen of Alpharetta, Ga., and Jeffrey D. Whalen and his wife, Patricia, of Whitehall; four grandchildren: Brian Whalen and his wife, Lisa, of Alpharetta, Ga., Heather Whalen of Seattle, Wash., Brooke Mowatt and her husband, Justin, of Whitehall, and Emma Whalen of Whitehall; a brother, Michael Whalen of Argyle; and several nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday at Our Lady of Hope Roman Catholic Church, Skene Street, Whitehall, with the Rev. Francis Dunbar officiating.
