BROADALBIN -- Julia M. Bogdan, 68, of Bogden Road, Broadalbin, died Thursday, Aug. 4, 1005, at home following a brief illness with her family by her side. She was born in Amsterdam on Oct. 23, 1936, a daughter of Stanley and Josie Raczynski Roberts. Mrs. Bogdan was a graduate of Saint Stanislaus School and a 1954 graduate of St. Mary's Institute. She later graduated from the Amsterdam School of Commerce. Julie was a lifelong area resident. She was a communicant of St. Joseph's Church in Broadalbin. Julie was a very active member and past president of its Altar Rosary Society. She was a member and past regent of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas Court Broderick No. 1591 and held other offices as well. Julie was a volunteer and served as day chairperson for the local Red Cross Bloodmobiles. She also served as a Fulton County Election Inspector for several years. She was a new member of the Country Chicks Red Hat club in Broadalbin. She was an avid polka dancer and would travel miles to enjoy a polka dance. Julie was a member of the Trailblazers Squaredance Club. Julie's greatest enjoyment were her 10 grandchildren. Survivors include her husband, Edward, whom she married on June 1, 1957; four sons, Timothy and his wife, Debbie, of Galway, Michael and his wife, Lorraine, and Robert and his wife, Beata, all of Broadalbin, and Gary and his wife, Patti, of Hadley; a sister and brother-in-law, Mary Ann and Joseph Bogdan of Frankfort; a sister-in-law, and her husband, Theresa and Alfred Ferguson of Broadalbin; her godfather, William Raczynski of Amsterdam; her grandchildren, Adam and Aaron Bogdan of Galway, Andrew, Opal Jessica, Gregory and Dennis Bogdan of Broadalbin, James and Travis Bogdan of Hadley and twins, Anthony and Peter Bogdan of Broadalbin; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Robert M. Halgas Funeral Home, Inc., 38 West Main St., Broadalbin, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph's Church, 7 North St., with the Rev. Charles Gaffigan and the Rev. Robert Powhida officiating. Burial will be in Saint Stanislaus Cemetery, Amsterdam. Calling hours will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Cairns, Isabel Queensbury -- Isabel Cairns, 94, of Aviation Road and former Waterford resident, died on Friday, Aug. 5, 2005, at the Stanton Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Queensbury. She was born on June 19, 1911, in Easton, N.Y., and was the daughter of the late Albert and Elizabeth Lundy Wolff. She was a graduate of Mechanicville High School, class of 1930, and the Samaritan Hospital School of Nursing. Mrs. Cairns also graduated from the Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia for the Mental and Nervous diseases. She was a registered nurse, having worked at Mary McClelland Hospital in Cambridge, the Albany Medical Center Hospital and she retired from the Montrose Veterans Administration Hospital in Montrose, N.Y. She was a member of the Emmanuel United Church of Mechanicville. She was the mother of M. Ronald (Pat) Cairns of Hague, and Marco Island, Fla., N. Bruce (Rita) Cairns of Melrose, N.Y. and Mrs. Fred (Sandra) Sweet of Corinth; sister of Mrs. Edward (Ruth) Lundberg of Easton, Mrs. Donald (Olive) Southworth of Cambridge, Kenneth Wolff of Valley Falls, N.Y., and Earl (Winifred) Wolff of Easton, and the late Mildred Cisler, Albert and Robert Wolff. Also survived by seven grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Funeral will be held Monday morning at 10 a.m. in the John J. Sanvidge Funeral Home, Inc., 58 Leversee Road, Route 40, Speigletown, N.Y. Interment will be in Memory's Garden, Colonie. Calling hours will be from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday, in the funeral home. Hoy, born June 2, 1912, wife of Charles S. Hoy who passed away June 20, 2002, passed away comfortably, Wednesday evening, Aug. 3, 2005, at her home. She was the mother of Marilyn Hoy-Youngblood and C. Nelson Hoy, who are deeply blessed and will be eternally grateful for the love and care she received the last two years of her life in the home of Debbie and Roger Passino of Hudson Falls. Mother was content, and appreciated being included in their family, and greatly enjoyed the attention of their children and grandchildren. She graduated from Wheelock College, taught kindergarten for 20 years, celebrated 64 years of marriage, and was active at Christ Methodist Church after retiring to Queensbury and Thurman. She and her late husband, Charles, were known as active, independent and interesting people. She will be remembered as always gracious and eternally positive. We will miss her and send our love with her on her journey. A private memorial service will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family. Killian, Ellen Casey GANSEVOORT -- Ellen Casey Killian died Friday, Aug. 5, 2005, at home surrounded by her loving family. She was born on July 21, 1927, the daughter of Evelyn O'Hearn Casey and Daniel Casey. She graduated from Hudson Falls High School and was employed by the New York Telephone Co. in Glens Falls. On Oct. 16, 1948, she married Joseph Killian at St. Mary's Church in Hudson Falls. She then left the telephone company to run the family business and raise her 12 children. She was a loving wife and mother and took great pride in her family's accomplishments. She spent her life putting everyone ahead of herself. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a son, Joseph Killian, and a brother, Joseph Casey. Lloyd, Jani Roberts GRANVILLE -- Jani Roberts Lloyd, 76, died Friday, Aug. 5, 2005, at Indian River Health & Rehabilitation Center. Born Sept. 20, 1928, in New York City, she was raised there and summered in her family home in South Poultney, Vt. She was educated at Castleton College in Vermont and taught in a one-room school in Bennington, Vt. Later she worked for surveyors office in Manhattan. While she was a member of the Welsh Ladies Choir in New York City she met her husband, Cyril, who was a guest soloist. They found that her "roots" went to his home village of Rhostryfan near Caernarvon, North Wales. They married in New York City in 1957. She and Cyril lived in McLean, Va., for many years, retiring to Granville in 1988. She is survived by her husband, Cyril Lloyd of Granville and her son, John, of Washington, D.C. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Penial Presbyterian Church, 4 Quaker St., Granville, with the Rev. Jerry McKinney officiating. Merrill, Grace A. SCHUYLERVILLE -- Grace A. Merrill, 87, of Schuylerville and formerly of Argyle, died Thursday, Aug. 4, 2005, at the Pleasant Valley Infirmary in Argyle. Born on Aug. 22, 1917, in Fort Edward, she was the daughter of James and Abigail (Brooks) Hoskins. Grace was a homemaker, employed at the Argyle IGA and as an executive secretary at Sherwood Medical until her retirement in 1985. She enjoyed her family, bowling, reading and rooting for the New York Yankees. Grace was a member of the Argyle United Presbyterian Church. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Rupert J. Merrill, a son, James R. Merrill; two brothers, Arthur Hoskins and Earl Hoskins; and two sisters, Laura Hodge and Hazel Logan. She is survived by a daughter, Marilyn Grant and her husband, Arnold, of Fort Edward; a son, Frank Merrill and his wife, Bonnie, of Schuylerville; her grandchildren: Carole Foster and her husband, Thomas, of Schuylerville, Andy Grant and his wife, Kathy, of Fort Edward, Scott Merrill of Florida, Kimberly Brennan and her husband, Joel, of Pennsylvania, Christopher Merrill and his wife, Chrissie, of Schuylerville, Seth Merrill of Schuylerville; and several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. WHITEHALL -- David F. Sawyer, 82, formerly of Williams Street, died peacefully at the Genesis Eldercare Nursing Home in Rutland, Vt., on Friday, Aug. 5, 2005. Born on March 21, 1923, in Whitehall, he was the son of the late David O. and Blanche (Wells) Sawyer. Before entering the U.S. Army, David attended Muskegon Community College in Michigan. He was wounded in the Battle of the Bulge and received the Purple Heart. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service as a rural route mail carrier. David held offices in the B.P.O.E. Lodge No. 1491, the Phoenix Lodge, Free & Accepted Masons No. 96, and was a member of the American Legion Post 83 of Whitehall. He played the organ and directed the choir at the First Baptist Church in Whitehall and later became a member of the Whitehall United Methodist Church. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Clifford Sawyer. He is survived by one sister, Blanche Virginia Parry of Memphis, Tenn.; two nieces, Noel Wadell and Mary Claire Sawyer; and two nephews, Lance Sawyer and William S. Parry. A graveside service with full military honors conducted by the American Legion Post No. 83 of Whitehall will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 9, 2005, at Greenmount Cemetery in Whitehall, with the Rev. She had been a resident of Hudson Falls, Rutland, Vt., and Robert Gardens in Queensbury, before moving to Preswick Chase in Saratoga five years ago. She was born April 4, 1910, in South Hartford, N.Y., the daughter of the late William X. and Nettie (Gilchrist) Bradway. Mabel was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Glens Falls, Hudson Falls, and Rutland, Vt. For many years, she was a secretary for both the Vermont Retail Grocery Association and Brown Insurance Agency in Rutland, Vt. Mabel was an avid bridge player with different groups in Hudson Falls, Glens Falls, Saratoga and Rutland. Cooking, gardening and her church were some of her favorite pastimes, but her family and friends were her greatest joy. Besides her parents, her husband, Carl Smith, and her twin sister, Mary Smith, predeceased her. Survivors include her son, Ronald Smith and his wife, Marjorie, of Saratoga; her daughter, Penelope "Penny" Benjamin of Newton, Mass.; two grandchildren, Kelly Lawless of Schenectady and Kevin Smith of Encinitas, Calif:, two great- grandchildren, Amanda and Sean Smith; her nieces, Jean Chiasson of Queensbury, and Monica Smith of Manhattan; and several cousins. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 9, 2005, at Regan & Denny Funeral Home, 53 Quaker Road, Queensbury, with the Rev. Caspar Green, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Glens Falls, officiating. Burial will follow in Pine View Cemetery, Queensbury.
