"Mac" HARTFORD -- Malcolm J. "Mac" Atkinson, 85, of Hartford, passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 17, 2005, at the Samuel Stratton VA Medical Center in Albany, after a short illness. Born on April 13, 1920, in Pawlet, Vt., he was the son of the late Ernest R. and Edith (Bradway) Atkinson. Mac was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in the 36th Division during World War II. He was a prisoner of war for a year and a half. For his meritorious service and injuries received in the line of duty, Mac was awarded The Purple and Two Bronze Stars. His wife of 63 years, Louise Atkinson, passed away in April of 2003. Mac worked for Sandy Hill Iron & Brass in Hudson Falls, for more than 30 years. He was a member of the South Hartford Congregational Church, a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 6196 in Queensbury, a member of the Anolia Chapter Order of the Eastern Star, a lifetime member of the Texas 36th Division Association, a member of the Herschel Lodge No. 508 of the Free and Accepted Masons, the American Society of Dowsers and a charter member of the Hartford Fish & Game Club and Rifle team. According to Mac's family, he loved helping people. He enjoyed living on his mountain and being with his family. Mac also loved hunting and fishing. Besides his parents and wife, he was predeceased by a brother, Ernest Atkinson and a sister, Shirley Atkinson. Survivors include his three daughters, Marlene Moore and her husband, Thomas, of Hartford, Mary Ellen Pike and her husband, William, of Hartford and Anita Butler and her husband, David, of Provincetown, Mass.; his four grandchildren, David Pike and his wife, Olivia, Tonya Wright and her husband, Chris, Julie Pike and Carrie Atchison and her husband, Fred; his four great-grandchildren, Jackson Pepper, Fiona Atchison, Ethan Pike and Cedar Lim; his sister, Laura Sweet of Hudson Falls; many nieces, nephews and cousins; and many very dear friends. Friends may call from noon to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 27, 2005, at Carleton Funeral Home, Inc., 68 Main St. in Hudson Falls. Memorial services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 27, 2005, following the calling hours at the funeral home, with the Rev. Michael Richards, pastor of the Hartford Yoked Parish, officiating. Burial will be in Pine View Cemetery at the convenience of the family. Clothier, Milo "Mike" CORINTH -- Milo "Mike" Clothier, 86, a longtime resident of Corinth, died Wednesday, Aug. 17, 2005, at Glens Falls Hospital with his family at his bedside. Born on March 21, 1919, in Washington, D.C., he was the son of the late Norman and Bessie (Guiles) Clothier. Mr. Clothier was a graduate of Corinth High School and the New York Diesel Institute of Albany. He joined the United States Army in 1942, serving as a corporal during World War II. Mr. Clothier married Janet LaRose on Sept. 26, 1942, in Corinth. The couple resided in Corinth for many years. He was employed at the International Paper Co. in Corinth for 42 years until his retirement in 1979. He was a member of the IP Quarter Century Club and was active in the Pulp and Sulphite Union for 30 years, was the former president of Local No. 4, and helped organize Local No. 6. Mr. Clothier also was a member of the Boy Scouts Troop of Corinth for 15 years, serving as assistant Scoutmaster, and was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Corinth. He was an active member of the Horace D. Washburn American Legion Post 533 of Corinth, serving as commander as well as in other offices. Mr. Clothier enjoyed many vacations in Myrtle Beach with his family, loved to read and play pinochle, and most of all he enjoyed people. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by two sisters, Dulcina and Blanche Clothier; and one brother, Norman Clothier. Survivors besides his wife of 62 years include three children, Nancy Fowler and her husband, Wil, of Queensbury, Dale Clothier and his wife, Tracey of Lake George and Deidre Edwards and her husband, Bob, of Wilton; six grandchildren, Cheryl Demetreus of Malta, Jeffrey Plummer, USN of San Diego, Calif., Sierra, Megan and Tyler Clothier of Lake George, and Rob Edwards of Mt. Vernon, N.Y.; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 20, 2005, at the Densmore Funeral Home, Inc., 7 Sherman Ave., Corinth, with the Rev. George Eberly, pastor of First United Methodist Church of Corinth, officiating. Burial with military honors will be held at Corinth Rural Cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. tonight at the funeral home. Members of the Horace D. Washburn American Legion Post 533 of Corinth will conduct a service at 8 p.m. tonight at the funeral home. Poultney, Vt. -- Francis J. LaPoint, age 81, of Poultney, Vt., passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 17, 2005, at Rutland Regional Hospital. Francis was born in Fort Edward, on Aug. 23, 1923, the son of the late Napoleon and Eileen (Kana) LaPoint. He served his country honorably in the United States Army 1943 to 1945. During World War II, he was awarded the Bronze Star medal. Francis was a member of the Granville VFW Post No. 1653 and a 60-year member of the J. Claire Carmody American Legion Post 39 of Poultney. His interests included watching the Giants' football games, and reading. Francis is survived by his wife of 25 years, Pauline LaPoint of Poultney, Vt.; a stepson, Ron Jones of Barrington, N.H.; a sister, Theresa McMorrow, of Poultney, Vt.; a nephew, John McMorrow of Poultney, Vt.; a niece, Judy Wilson of Burlington, Vt.; a brother, "Junie" LaPoint of Ticonderoga; and many nieces and nephews. Published in the Post-Star on 8/19/2005. Larsen Sr., Richard A. WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- Richard A. Larsen Sr., age 73, of West Palm Beach, Fla., passed away at his home on Wednesday, Aug. 10, 2005. Richard was a veteran of the Korean War serving in the U.S. Army. Richard had been in the area since 1993, coming from Warrensburg, N.Y. Richard is survived by his three sons, Richard (Lorraine) Larsen Jr. of Jupiter Farms, Edward (Sherry) Larsen of Newburgh, N.Y., and Curtis (Karen) Larsen of Clinton Corners, N.Y.; a brother, Robert Larsen, of California; six grandchildren, Jessica, Kristina, Jana, Curtis Jr., Richard III and Kathreen. A memorial service will take place for Richard on Saturday, Aug. 20, 2005, at 11 a.m., at the Tillman Funeral Home, 2170 South Military Trail, West Palm Beach, Fla.. Loiselle, Eric Peter OLMSTEDVILLE -- Deputy Sheriff Eric Peter Loiselle, 31, of Olmstedville was killed in the line of duty early Wednesday morning, Aug. 17, 2005, at mile post 107 on the Adirondack Northway. Eric was born Aug. 10, 1974, in Glens Falls, the son of Anne Sylvester Allen. Eric was a 1992 graduate of Minerva Central School and had earned 16 credit hours at Adirondack Community College. Eric served in the U.S. Air Force from 1992 to 1996, in the Persian Gulf War. Eric joined the Essex County Sheriffs Department as a deputy in June of 2001. Prior to that, Eric was a truck driver for several companies, including American Van Lines and Smiths Transport. Eric enjoyed snowmobiling, camping, and NASCAR, but he loved his job and his family. He adored his wife and his 3-year-old son. Eric is survived by his wife, Natalie Royer Loiselle; and his son, Derrick Wyatt Loiselle of Olmstedville; his mother, Anne Allen; his grandmother, Helen Sylvester of Olmstedville; his sister, Nicole, and her husband, Chet Prouty, of Johnsburg; and his nephews, Nathan and Chester Prouty of Johnsburg. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at noon Saturday, Aug. 20, 2005, at Saint Joseph's Catholic Church in Olmstedville. Interment, with honors, will follow in the Federal Flats Cemetery, Olmstedville. NEWELL JR. 35-YEAR VETERAN MILLIS POLICE DEPARTMENT MILLIS, Mass. -- Frank S. Newell Jr., 64, of Franklin, Mass., where he has been a resident since 1970, died Tuesday evening, Aug. 16, 2005, at his home due to complications from type 1 juvenile diabetes. Born Dec. 15, 1940, in Framingham, Mass., he was the son of the late Frank J. Newell Sr. and Ruth (Keough) Newell. He was educated in the Millis, Mass., public schools, where he was a three-sport all-star, as well as excelling scholastically, graduating with the Class of 1958. After high school, he worked for a time with the former Millis Transportation Company, and when he came of age, enrolled at the Police Academy, and began his career with the Millis Police Department, which spanned more than 35 years. A member of the Franklin Lodge of Elks, Franklin, Mass., he was an avid sports fan, most especially the Patriots, and loved animals. He leaves his former wife, Janet Harrington; a daughter, Amy Brock, and son-in-law, Kyle Brock, of Lake George; two sisters, Helen McDermott of Denmark, Maine, and Marion Chugani of Cumberland, R.I.; and three grandchildren, Sarah, Rachael and Connor Brock, all of Lake George; as well as many nephews and nieces. Nystad, Emanuel AVENTURA, Fla. -- Emanuel Nystad, age 82, of Aventura, Fla., a former Glens Falls resident, died Wednesday, Aug. 17, 2005. He was born July 11, 1923, in Winschoton, Holland, to the late Israel and Sara Nystad. Mr. Nystad was a U.S. World War II veteran and a recipient of the Purple Heart. Manny was a watchmaker and jeweler in Glens Falls. He was very active in the community. He was a former president of the Glens Falls Chamber of Commerce and a 40-year member of the Rotary, among other organizations. After retirement, he relocated to Florida where he was active at the Aventura Turnberry Jewish Center. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn "Havie" (Pollack) Cohen-Nystad; three daughters, Aarone Lea (Dr. Richard) Corwin, Frandee (Nathan) Singer and Claudia Jean (David) Kimball; and several grandchildren. Funeral services will be Friday, Aug. 19, 2005, at 11 a.m. at the Fred C. Dames Funeral Home, 3200 Black Road, Joliet, IL 60435. Vander Laan, Garret Albany -- Garret Vander Laan, 92, passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 17, 2005, at Julie Blair Nursing Home in Albany. Born on May 25, 1913, in Clifton, N.J., he was the son of Dirk and Katherine (Kuit) Vander Laan. Garret was a veteran of World War II having served with the U.S. Army. He received the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, the Good Conduct Medal and World War II Victory Medal. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Adrianna Vander Laan on March 1, 1999, and four brothers, Richard, Jacob, John and Martin Vander Laan. Survivors include his daughter, Jean Mulder and her husband, Del, of Queensbury; his grandchildren, Jillian Mulder of Queensbury, Jenna Mulder of Queensbury, Garret Mulder and his wife, Rebecca, of Danbury, Conn., and Dr. Jessica Mulder and her fianc‚, Gregory Longo, of Dix Hills, N.Y.; a great-grandson, Aidan Mulder of Danbury, Conn.; sisters, Marie Van Gulick of Denver, Colo., and Henrietta Windt of Hawthorne, N.J.; and many nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be conducted at 12 p.m., on Monday, Aug. 22, 2005, at Gerald B. H. Solomon National Cemetery in Schuylerville with burial following the service. There will be no calling hours.
