Born in Tupper Lake on July 25, 1913, she was the daughter of the late John and Mary (LaRock) Black. Clara loved her home and enjoyed sewing quilts and other items for her family. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, George Gregory, in 1985; a son-in-law, Robert Hine, a grandson, Stephen Hine, and 11 brothers and sisters. Survivors include three daughters: Shirley Hine of Goldsboro, N.C. and her three children, Melanie Arnold and her husband, Wade, and their children, David Wade, Melissa and Robbie Arnold, David Hine, and Kevin Hine and his wife, Melody, and their children, Kristopher, Stepheny and Jacqueline Hine, all of North Carolina; Jan Peterson and her husband, John, of Fort Miller and their children, Greg and Karl Peterson and Bruce Brockway, all of Fort Miller, Jackie Adler of Plymouth, Mass. and her sons, Eric Adler of Conn. and Matthew Adler of Lake Placid; and many nieces and nephews. Friends may call at the family home on Walker Road from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 28. A graveside service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday, Aug. 29, at Long Lake Cemetery, Long Lake, with the Rev. Irwin, Daniel "Digger" HUDSON FALLS -- Daniel "Digger" Irwin, 52, of Kvale Lane, died as a result of a motorcycle accident on Thursday, Aug. 25, 2005. Born in Glens Falls on March 19, 1953, he was the son of the late Samuel and Thelma (LaGoy) Irwin. Digger was a graduate of Hartford Central School, Class of 1972. On March 18, 1972, he married Cindy Burch at the Hartford United Methodist Church. Digger was a trustee and member of the Hudson Falls United Methodist Church, and a member of the Moreau Rifle Team. He was a former member of the Hartford Fish and Game Club, the Hartford Volunteer Fire Co., a former captain of the Argyle Emergency Squad, and a former member of the Hartford Town Council. He was also a former member of the Hartford United Methodist Church and Western Hills United Methodist Church in El Paso, Texas. Digger and Cindy moved from Hartford to El Paso, Texas, in 1995, and Lancaster, Penn., in 2000, before returning to the area because of the grandchildren, in 2001. Digger was very fond of his Amish friends in Pennsylvania. Digger was an avid Harley-Davidson rider and enjoyed hunting. Survivors include his wife, Cindy Irwin, of Hudson Falls; a son, Brian Irwin, home on leave from Iraq, and his wife, Jodie, of Hartford; a daughter, Bonnie Atkinson and her husband, Ernest, of Cutler, Maine; four grandchildren who knew him as "Bubby," Brandon, Erin and Meghan Irwin of Hartford and Isaac Atkinson of Cutler, Maine; seven brothers: Michael Irwin and his wife, Claudia, of Argyle, Ronald Irwin and his wife, Melissa, of Argyle, Samuel Irwin III and his wife, Merry, of Lake George, Russell Irwin and his companion, Lisa Winchell, of Hartford, James Irwin and his wife, Cora, of Hartford, Roger Irwin and his wife, Cathy, of Johnsonville and Terrence Irwin and his wife, Suki, of Gansevoort; four sisters: Joan Combs and her husband, Morgan Keith, of Queensbury, Judith Burch and her husband, Daniel, of Hartford, Jayme Stalker and her husband, Donald, of Hillsdale, and Jennifer Collins and her husband, Michael, of Argyle; and many nieces and nephews. Middleton, 92, a former resident of Clark Road, passed away Friday, Aug. 26, 2005, at Maplewood Manor, Ballston Spa. Born in Waterbury, Conn., on Feb. 17, 1913, she was the daughter of the late William and Mabel (Delkescamp) Schuster. Miriam was a graduate of Brooklyn College. On Oct. 26, 1946, she married Clarence Middleton at the Village Baptist Church in Fort Edward. She was a member of St. Timothy's Episcopal Church in South Glens Falls for many years. Miriam was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Clarence; two sisters, Evelyn Dixon and Doris Montgomery; and two brothers, William Schuster II and Warren Schuster. Survivors include her daughter, Cathleen Martin and her husband, Jeffrey, of Gansevoort; a granddaughter, Leslie Carver and her husband, Timothy, of Oregon City, Ore.; a grandson, Benjamin Martin and his wife, Trina, of Port Dickinson; four great-grandchildren: Tessa Cave, Catherine Carver, Matthew Conners and Anna Marie Martin; and several nieces and nephews. CHAPPAQUA, N.Y. -- Clifford H. Philo of Chappaqua, died peacefully at his home Aug. 20, 2005. He was 87. Mr. Philo was a retiree of the Continental Insurance Co. (now CNA), where he was vice president. He began his career with the Glens Falls Insurance Co. in 1940, serving in various administrative capacities in the investment department. He became vice president in charge of investments in 1967. The following year, the Glens Falls Insurance Co. became part of the Continental Group, and Mr. Philo transferred to New York City, while still continuing his role as vice president in Glens Falls. Among other professional activities, Mr. Philo served as chairman of the investment committees of the New York Property Insurance Underwriters Association, and of the Nuclear Energy Liability Insurance Association. He was a member of the Boston Security Analysts Association. He was educated in the Glens Falls school system, graduating from Glens Falls High School in 1936, and at Middlebury College, where he was a member of the Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity. During his years in Glens Falls he was active in both church and community affairs. He was president of the Warren County Tuberculosis and Health Association, chairman of the Warren County March of Dimes, Warren County Chapter of the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis, Young Adult Civic League, and New York State Service Council. He was a member of Christ Church United Methodist in Glens Falls until moving to Chappaqua in 1969, then becoming a member of the United Methodist Church of Pleasantville. The son of Harry and Bertha (Seeley) Philo, Mr. Philo married Dorothy DeGrush on Dec. 8, 1951. She predeceased him on March 19, 1994. He is survived by his daughter, Virginia A. Philo of Rutland, Vt.; a son, John "Matt" Philo and his wife, Silsbee; and his grandchildren, Jillian and William of New York City. A man of deep and sustaining faith, Mr. Philo often stated that life was a gift. He was entirely dedicated to his family all of his life. He loved nature, and as a young man, wrote that "A day in the woods by myself has always brought me nearest to the God whom I knew best." In his younger years, he climbed many of the peaks of the Adirondack Mountains. In his later years, he enjoyed many vacations in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont with his beloved wife, Dorothy. Together, they walked every mile of the carriage trails in Acadia National Park in Maine, as well as in the Rockefeller State Park Preserve in Mount Pleasant, N.Y. Arrangements were handled by Beecher Funeral Home in Pleasantville, N.Y. Services were private. "Sandy" (Russell) TROY -- Sandra L. "Sandy" (Russell) Sheridan, 60, of Linden Avenue, went into the arms of the Lord, surrounded by her loving family, on Thursday, Aug. 25, 2005, at Glens Falls Hospital, after a short illness. Born on July 29, 1945, in Glens Falls, Sandy was the daughter of the late Floyd Russell and the late Laura Pelicone. For several years, she was a binder at Regal Press in Troy, and also at Fort Orange Press in Albany. Sandy liked to crochet and was an avid reader, who especially enjoyed reading Danielle Steele books. Spending time with her grandson, Shaun, was special for her. She was a very loving and kind person with a huge heart who would help anyone. As a single mom, Sandy was devoted to raising her two daughters. Her great sense of humor will be missed by her family and friends. In addition to her parents, a brother, Charles L. Winchell, also passed away before her. Survivors include her two daughters, Donna Sheridan of Troy, and Sheri Stoneking and her husband, Scott, of Ohio; three grandchildren, Shaun Kemble of Troy, and Scott and Stacey Stoneking of Ohio; her sisters, JoAnn Williams and her husband, Gordon, of South Glens Falls, and Betty Mead and her husband, Wilbur, of Hudson Falls; her brothers, Frederick Pelicone and his wife, Sandra, of South Glens Falls, and Roger Winchell and his wife, Betty, of Hudson Falls; her sister-in-law, Barbara Winchell of Granville; several nieces and nephews; many great-nieces and great-nephews; as well as great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews. Family and friends may call from 5 to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 31, at the Cornerstone Full Gospel Church at 1767 Route 196, in the town of Kingsbury. Services will follow the calling hour at 6 p.m. on Wednesday at the church, with the Rev. Vernon Collier, pastor, officiating. Taylor, Beryl Meyers VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- Beryl Meyers Taylor of Virginia Beach, Va., with her children and grandchildren near, passed away Sunday, Aug. 21, 2005, after a courageous battle with cancer. Beryl was born Dec. 4, 1929, in Syracuse, to Lucille Beryl Meyers and William Wyckoff Meyers. She worked a variety of jobs and enjoyed the family antiques business. She also worked in the hotel restaurant business, as well as the travel industry. Beryl loved to travel, collecting antiques, reading books, needlepoint, making her bears and painting. Beryl had a vast knowledge of history and also family genealogy. Survivors include her daughters: Grace Harper Taylor of Virginia Beach, Va., Laura Taylor Phillips of Fort Edward, Griebe Van Ness Taylor of Queensbury and Rebecca LaGrange of Vermont: one son, ZanPieterson Vandeventer Taylor and his wife, Janet Marie, and their two daughters, Abigail Marie Taylor and CarolAnn Marie Taylor, all of Wharton, N.J.; and lastly her beloved dog, Schatze. Arrangements were made by Colonial Crematorium and burial will be at the discretion of the family at St. Joseph's Episcopal Church in Concordville, Pa.
