RUTLAND, Vt. -- Marion F. Driscoll, 95, recently of the Sunset Home in Rutland, Vermont, died Monday, Aug. 29, 2005. A complete obituary will be published in a future edition of The Post Star. Holcomb, Anna Mae WHITEHALL -- Anna Mae Holcomb, 83, formerly of Hatch Hill Road, "went home" Tuesday, Aug. 29, 2005, at the Fort Hudson Nursing Home in Fort Edward after a courageous battle with Alzheimer's. Born on March 27, 1922, in Middletown Springs, Vt., she was the daughter of the late Lucius and Eva (Stoddard) Hurlburt. In 1941, she married Benjamin E. Holcomb, who passed away in 1997. Besides her parents and husband, she was predeceased by four brothers, Lucius Hurlburt, George Hurlburt, Charles Hurlburt, and Henry Hurlburt Jr.; one sister, Alice Brown; and a son-in-law, George Gebo. Mrs. Holcomb is survived by her three daughters, Shirley VanGuilder and her husband, Raymond, Ruth Stevens and her husband, John, and Mary Gebo; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; with her special great-granddaughter, Ashley Millet, who was her "buddy" for three years; three sisters, Eva Holcomb, Jesse Davis, and June Davis; brother-in-law, Bernard Brown; and several nieces and nephews. The family asks that flowers be omitted and remembrances be in the form of a donation in Anna Mae's name to the Fort Hudson Nursing Home, c/o Alzheimer's Unit, 318 Upper Broadway, Fort Edward, NY 12828. Family and friends may call at Jillson Funeral Home, Inc., 46 Williams St., Whitehall, on Thursday, Sept. 1, 2005, from 6 to 9 p.m. A funeral service will be conducted on Friday, Sept. 2, at 1 p.m. at the funeral home with The Rev. Esther Lee, pastor of the North Granville Methodist Church, officiating. Interment will follow at the North Granville Cemetery. Novak, Sylvester M. Lake Lauderdale -- Sylvester M. Novak, 80, of Lauderdale Farm, died Monday, Aug. 29, 2005, at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center, Bennington, Vt., after a long illness. He was the husband of Blanche (Kelczewski) Ostrowski-Novak. Born Dec. 19, 1924, in Saratoga Springs, he was the son of John and Rose (Konrad) Novak. The family moved to Brooklyn but the children continued to summer at the Galsac Farm in Saratoga. Sylvester graduated from Brooklyn Technical High School. He then served in the United States Navy during World War II. Sylvester worked for many years for the New York Telephone Company. At the time of his retirement he was in management in New York City. He and his family lived in Old Tappen, N.J. Love for farming and gardening brought Sylvester to the Cambridge area. In 1984 he and his first wife bought Lake Lauderdale Farm. There he had his own woodworking shop where he refinished furniture and made beautiful wooden pieces. He was an avid golfer. In Old Tappen, he was the fire chief for many years and locally, was a member of the Shushan Volunteer Fire Department where he often acted as Chaplin. A devout Roman Catholic, he was a communicant of St. Patrick's Church in Cambridge and an active member of the St. Patrick's Knights of Columbus Council. He was predeceased by his first wife and mother of his children, Anna (Zozula) Novak, who died in 1989. Survivors include his wife of eight years; seven children and their spouses, John and Gayle Novak of Fairfax, Va., Barbara and James Hopps of Alpharetta, Ga., Nancy Evans of Marietta, Ga., James and Donna Novak of LaGrangeville, N.Y., Sylvester and Amy Novak Jr. of Allentown, Pa., Margaret and Peter Sexton of Simsbury, Conn., and Mary Ellen and William Clement of Kinnelon, N.J.; 22 grandchildren; one great-grandson; two stepchildren and their spouses, Carole and Charles Klotz of Cario, N.Y., and George and Marjorie Ostrowski, of Glen Cove, N.Y.; three step-grandsons; three step-greatgrandchildren; two sisters and their spouses, Rosemary and William Hopps of Saratoga Springs and Helena and John Sakowski of Greenville Center. Friends and relatives are invited to call today, Aug. 31, 2005, at Ackley & Ross Funeral Home, 73 West Main St., Cambridge, from 1 to 3 and 5 to 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Father Liam Condon at St. Patrick's Church, 17 South Park St., Cambridge, on Thursday, Sept. 1, 2005, at 8 a.m. Burial will be at St. John's Cemetery, Middle Village, Queens, at 2 p.m. Father Joseph Kozlowski of St. Hyacinth Church, Glen Head, N.Y., will officiate. Smith Sr., August W. MANCHESTER CENTER. Vt. -- August W. Smith Sr., 80, died Monday, Aug. 29, 2005, at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center. Born March 31, 1925, in Middle Granville, he was the son of Walter and Jessie (Parks) Smith. Mr. Smith was a plumber employed by Jack Stannard Plumbing. He was an Army veteran of World War II. Survivors include two sons, August Smith, Jr. and his wife, Debbie, of Danby and Mark Smith and his companion, Phyliss Mercure, of Granville; two daughters, Kathy Dirga and her husband, Andy, of Granville and Susie Devino and her husband, Fred, of Glens Falls; two stepsons, Clayton Hayes of Sandgate, Vt. and Clinton Hayes of Ohio; 13 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, at Robert M. King Funeral Home, 23 Church St., Granville, with the Rev. James Peterson officiaiting. No calling hours will be scheduled.
