WARRENSBURG -- Annette I. Cameron, 95, of Marion Avenue, passed away Monday morning, Feb. 7, 2005, at Glens Falls Hospital following a long illness. Born Sept. 16, 1909, in Johnsburg, she was the daughter of the late Stephen and Elizabeth (Stackhouse) Cross. She lived her entire life in the Warrensburg-Johnsburg area. On July 17, 1937, she married John G. Cameron at the United Methodist Church of Johnsburg, and they shared 42 years together. For many years, she was the head cook at Maxam's Boarding House in Garnet Lake, and also at the former Pillar's Restaurant in Warrensburg. Among many hobbies, Annette enjoyed cultivating raspberries, and she also took pride in her flower and vegetable gardens. Many of her achievements included working with under-privileged children. She and Millie Lawrence were the founders of Warrensburg Head Start, teaching cooking, canning and sewing in her home to many of these students. She also taught cooking and nutrition in many local homes for a while through a Cornell University program. Besides her parents, her husband, John G. Cameron, passed away in 1979; a son, Stephen Cameron, passed away in 1996; two sisters, Geneva and Laura Reynolds; and a brother, Clifford Cross, all predeceased her. Survivors include one daughter, Louisa Cameron of Warrensburg, with whom Annette resided with; one son, Michael Cameron and his wife, Debbie, of Laurel, Md.; one daughter-in-law, Jolene Cameron of Maryland; four grandchildren: Michael R. Cameron and his wife, Elizabeth, Stephen and Benjamin Cameron, and Jennifer Cameron; also many nieces, nephews, and cousins. There are no calling hours scheduled. A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 10, at Maynard D. Baker Funeral Home, 11 Lafayette St., Queensbury, with James Allen Baker, Layman of the Baptist faith, officiating. Interment will take place at Wesleyan Cemetery, Garnet Lake Road, Johnsburg, at a time convenient to the family. Cyr, 62, a longtime resident of North Creek, passed away Sunday, Feb. 6, 2005, at Glens Falls Hospital, following a brief illness. Born April 12, 1942, in Minerva, she was the daughter of Frances Hayes Frisbie of North Creek and the late Roland Cyr. Ellen was a self-employed Home Health Aide, providing care for several people in the Warren County area up until her retirement. She was a loving mother to nine children: Jody, Cassius, Ronda, John, Glennice, Theodore, Ethel, Norman and Tonya. Ms. Cyr is survived by her beloved mother, Francis Frisbie; 29 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren; and her brothers and sisters, Myrt, Ted, Gene, Nola, Jana, Carla, Lynn, Val, and Judy. Deeb, George TROY -- George Deeb, 85, of Fifth Avenue, Lansingburgh, died Monday, Feb. 7, 2005, at the Community Hospice at St. Mary's Hospital. Born in Glens Falls, he was son of the late Michael and Emma George Deeb, and the husband of Etheal Whittier Deeb for 64 years. Educated in Glens Falls, he moved to Troy in 1937. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving from 1942 to 1946. Mr. Deeb was the proprietor of Deeb's Milk Bar in Lansingburgh for 39 years, retiring in 1985. George was well-known for his dedication to numerous civic organizations. He was a member, past president, and longtime secretary of the Rotary Club of Lansingburgh, a past master of Jerusalem Lodge No. 355 Free & Accepted Masons, past High Priest of Phoenix Chapter No. 133, past Illustrious Master of Bloss Council No. 14, past Commander of Apollo Commandry No.15, past president of the old 17th Masonic District, member of the Albany Royal Arch College, a charter member of the Veterans Club of Lansingburgh, a member of the board of directors of the Lansingburgh Boys and Girls Club, and a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Lansingburgh. George was an avid stamp and coin collector. Survivors in addition to his wife Etheal, include; a daughter, Bonnyburke Fausel (Brian) of Troy; a brother, William Deeb (Helene) of Albany, a sister, Sadie Futterer of Jersey City, N.J., two granddaughters, Michelle Harden (Joel) of Albany, and Nicole Hotaling (A.J.) of Waterford; a great- grandson, Brian Francis Hotaling; his father-in-law, Emmons A. Whittier of Houlton, Maine; a nephew, Daniel C. Miller (Judy) of Florida, and several other nieces and nephews. George was predeceased by his siblings: Moses, John, Joseph, Mary, Catherine, Anna and Julia Deeb. Gift Shop Charities Dempsey, Mary Claire SCARBOROUGH, Maine -- Mary Claire Dempsey, formerly a longtime resident of Glens Falls and Queensbury, passed away peacefully after a brief illness in Scarborough, Maine on Monday, Feb. 7, 2005. Mary Claire, affectionately known as Mickey, was born on May 13, 1923, in Philadelphia, Pa., the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Louis Walther. She was a graduate of the Ogontz School and Briarcliff College in Briarcliff Manor, N.Y. In 1950, she married Robert T. Dempsey, formerly of Hudson Falls. They established their residence in Glens Falls, where they raised five children. While always devoted to her family, she also will be remembered for her volunteer and community service over the years. These include the Glens Falls Hospital Guild, the Children's Committee of Warren County for Foster Children and the Hyde Museum. An avid golfer and outdoorswoman, she and her family were longtime members of the Glens Falls Country club and the Lake George Club. She is survived by her five children: Donna Dempsey Calder and her husband, Gordon, of Rye, N.Y, R. Thomas Dempsey and his wife, Mary Jo, of Mequon, Wis., Lorraine Dempsey Talbot and her husband, Peter, of Scarborough, Maine, Steve Dempsey of North Bergen, N.J., and Karen Dempsey Carney and her husband, Chris, of Marblehead., Maine; one sister, Lorraine de Braux of Paris, France; seven grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Dumas, 28, passed away Sunday, Feb. 6, 2005, at Fletcher Allen Medical Center, in Burlington, Vt., due to injuries sustained in an accident. She was born Dec. 27, 1976, in Bay Shore, N.Y., the daughter of Theodore and the late Linda (Jakubik) Kolffvanoosterwyk. Kirsten was an avid hiker and loved the Adirondacks. Her greatest joy was her children. Her mother, Linda Ann Kolffvanoosterwyk, her maternal grandparents, Joseph and Mildred Jakubik, her paternal grandparents, Lambert and Mildred Kolffvanoosterwyk, allpredeceased her. She is survived by her husband, David Dumas, a daughter, Elizabeth Kolffvanoosterwyk; and a son, Joseph Dumas, all of Gansevoort. She is also survived by her father, Theodore, and stepmother, Ellen Kolffvanoosterwyk of Altona, N.Y., her sister, Karen Poupore and husband, Paul, of Mooers Forks; a brother T.J. Elder, James K. QUEENSBURY -- James K. Elder, 87, of Corinth Road., passed away at Fort Hudson Nursing Home, Monday, Feb. 7, 2005. James K. Elder was born Dec. 1, 1917, in Port Henry, N.Y., son of James and Katherine (Sennott) Elder. A major achievement of Jim's life was serving with the 509th Group of the Army Air Corps during World War II. He enlisted Feb. 10, 1942, and served as Flight Engineer of "The Big Stink", a B-29 that accompanied the Enola Gay on the mission over Hiroshima, Japan. He attained the rank of Master Seargent. His name and photograph appear in the Smithsonian Institution regarding the historic flight. He is a certified American hero. Jim's career spanned 32 years with Niagara Mohawk as Chief Maintenance Operator, and he retired in 1980. He performed work with the Boy Scouts and drove for Glens Falls Senior Citizens. He was a very involved and supportive father and grandfather - he taught by example. He and Marion traveled throughout the United States and enjoyed many sights after retiring. Jim will be remembered for many things including his manners and sense of humor through these last years with Alzheimer's disease. He always had his trademark smile. He was predeceased by his parents, one son stillborn in 1960, and another son, Kenneth A. Elder, in 1994, and by his sisters Cordelia and Evelyn, and by his brothers Robert, Roy, Matthew, and John. Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Marion Haselton Elder, his son David A. Elder and his wife, Teresa of St. Petersburg, Fla., his daughter, Bonnie Elder Francett and her husband, John C. Francett of Queensbury, and four grandsons; James M. Elder and his wife, Kim of Queensbury, Sergeant Shane Elder and his wife, Kendra of Fort Sam Houston, Tx., Neil Elder Francett and his fiancee, Teah Cerino, of Queensbury, Harrison W. Francett of Queensbury, two great grandsons, David J. Elder of Queensbury and Bryce Elder of Texas. One sister Jane Cutler, Brother Paul S. Elder and his wife, Lou of South Glens Falls, his cousin Malcolm Elder and his wife, Zella of Fort Edward and many nieces and nephews. His best friends included Marv and Ruth Hall of Glens Falls and Leonard and Mary Godfrey of West Acton, Mass. His family thanks his night sitters, Dody Thetford and Nancy Harrington, the staff at 3 Central and 3 South at Glens Falls Hospital, and the staff of Fort Hudson, where Jim was a resident for the past month. His family especially thanks Dr. Richard Leach for whom Jim always had a smile right to the end. Hanchett, Joyce Vera QUEENSBURY -- Joyce Vera Hanchett, 80, of Zenas Drive, Queensbury, died Monday, Feb. 7, 2005, at Glens Falls Hospital, after a long illness. Born on Feb. 18, 1924, in Glens Falls, she was the daughter of the late Ernest and Vera (Thomas) Mason. Joyce and her husband, Allyn, were married in Hudson Falls on Oct. 29, 1942. The couple were able to share a wonderful marriage. She loved crafts and was a great seamstress and quilter, was an excellent cook and baker, and enjoyed spending her free time reading. Besides her parents, Joyce was predeceased by her two sisters-in-law, Phyllis (Baker) Hanchett and Glen (Hanchett) Comisky. Survivors include her husband of 62 years, Allyn F. Hanchett; five children: Gary Hanchett and his wife, Sue, of Fairbanks, Alaska, Keith Hanchett and his wife, Karen, of Lake George, Craig Hanchett and his wife, Denise, of Stony Creek, and Mark Hanchett and his wife, Paula, of South Glens Falls, and Melody Hanchett and her companion, C.A. Published in the Post-Star on 2/9/2005. Hoffman, David F. BOLTON LANDING -- David F. Hoffman, 71, of Lake Shore Drive, died unexpectedly, Thursday, Feb. 3, 2005, while vacationing in Florida. Born on Oct. 18, 1933, in Gowanda, N.Y., he was the son of the late Harold and Esther (Bloomer) Hoffman. David met and married Helen R. "Bobbie" Knowles on Sept. 4, 1954, in Denver, Colo., while attending hotel and restaurant management school at Denver University. Upon graduation in 1955, with a BSBA, David joined the Hilton Hotel Corp. in New York City. After training in Manhattan, the Hoffmans moved to Hartford, Conn., where David worked as personnel manager and went on to become a hotel general manager. He traveled for the corporation, working in Atlanta, Ga., Pittsburgh, Pa., and Tarrytown, N.Y. In 1963, David transferred to Hilton International, Inc., as general manager in Puerto Rico and thereafter to Trinidad, West Indies. In 1968, he was appointed Director-Manpower Development for Hilton International based in New York City, and in 1970, he was elected vice president. In 1983, David was promoted to a senior vice president for Hilton International. When Hilton International was purchased by Ladbrooke Co. in 1987, David moved to the new home office in London, England. Upon retirement in 1991, the Hoffmans returned to the USA to reside in Bolton Landing. David was a volunteer for High Peaks Hospice. He also was employed at the Hiland Golf Club. His retirement passions became golfing and the comaraderie with his golfing buddies. He was a member of the Sagamore Fitness Center, Bolton Landing, where he went routinely to continue his love of the hospitality industry. David also enjoyed boating on Lake George and wintering in Venice, Fla. Survivors include his wife of 50 years, "Bobbie" Hoffman of Bolton Landing; two children, Cynthia "Cindy" Jean (Hoffman) Mosscrop of Bolton Landing, and Gary Frank Hoffman and his wife, Elizabeth, of Lancaster, Pa.; two granddaughters, Julia Kaye Mosscrop of Bolton Landing and Kathleen Elizabeth Hoffman of Lancaster, Pa.; one sister, Susan Rew of Elkton, Md.; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. David was very proud to be known as Julia's grandpa at her various sporting events and Girl Scout events. Julia is a ninth- grade student at Bolton Central School. King, John "Mike" HERMITAGE, Tenn. and GLENS FALLS -- John "Mike" King, 56, of Hermitage, Tenn., and formerly of Glens Falls, went to be with the Lord, after a brief illness, on Thursday, Feb. 3, 2005, at his home in Hermitage, surrounded by his loving family. Born on Sept. 1, 1948, in Glens Falls, he was the son of the late Ruth King and Nicholas Liapias. Mike served in the U.S. Army where he was awarded the National Defense Medal. He enjoyed drawing, playing the guitar, fishing, working on cars, watching Western movies and being outdoors, especially on picnics at Shelby Park with his children and grandchildren. Survivors include his beloved wife, Lucille Dickinson King of Hermitage, Tenn; his daughter, Florence King and her fiance, Jason New of Nashville, Tenn; his son, Kenneth King of Hermitage, Tenn; five grandchildren: Jason New Jr., Jala New, Jordan New, Jaleana New and Quanisha Whitson, all of Nashville, Tenn; a stepson, Jason Hay of Hudson Falls; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. Marcotte, 78, of North Hudson, died Sunday, Feb. 6, 2005, at her home. Born Dec. 3, 1926, in Westport, she was the daughter of Joseph and Mary (Borden) Budwick. Besides her parents, Doris was predeceased by her husband, Napoleon Marcotte; her brothers: Joseph, Dewey and Donald Budwick. She is survived by her five children: Robert and Jean Marcotte of Hague, Nappy and Judy Marcotte of Moriah, Linda and Frank Anauo of North Hudson, Dory and Glenn Fiore of Blue Ridge, and Mary and Rickie Stockwell of Port Henry; her sister, Eleanor Browne of San Diego, Calif.; her brothers, Kenneth Budwick of Westport and Bob Budwick of Elizabethtown; 14 grandchildren; and 29 great-grandchildren. McGuire, James Martin HAGUE -- James Martin McGuire, 88, of Graphite Mountain Road, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2005, at Moses-Ludington Hospital of Ticonderoga. Born Sept. 6, 1916, in Trenton, N.J., he was the son of the late Hugh and Nellie (Szemis) McGuire. Mr. McGuire lived in Trenton, N.J., for most of his life. He was employed as a supervisor for Continental Baking Co. (Wonder Bread) of Trenton, N.J., for many years before his retirement. He served as captain of the Coast Guard Auxiliary of Trenton, N.J., and was a member of the DeCou Fire Department in Trenton. He was a resident of Hague since 1983 and was a member of the Hague Volunteer Fire Department and the Hague Fish & Game Club. Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Elizabeth E. (Steitz) McGuire; three children: Karen P. Carvale of Trenton, N.J., Timothy J. McGuire of Panora, Iowa, and Wendy Beeman of Ticonderoga; and one brother, Joseph McGuire of Trenton, N.J. He is also survived by seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Place, Vincent Rutherford GLENS FALLS -- Vincent Rutherford Place, 70, died peacefully in his sleep on Monday, Feb. 7, 2005, at his home. Born June 20, 1934, in Hempstead, he was the son of the late Vincent R. and Claudia (Longo) Place. Vincent spent his childhood on Long Island and later moved to Chestertown, where he graduated from Chestertown High School, and served as vice president of his senior class. He was a communicant of St. Mary's Church, Glens Falls. Vincent was a Navy veteran of the Korean War and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal. He worked as manager of the meat department of A & P and Grand Union for 45 years. He served as the union representative for United Food & Commercial Workers Union, Local 1. Vincent enjoyed outdoor life, including hunting big game in the early years and small game later in life. Other hobbies included fishing, gardening, bird watching, cooking, movies, reading, and also breeding hunting dogs. He especially enjoyed time spent with his children and grandchildren. He was a Little League coach and each year coordinated the family reunion. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Mary T. "Mike" GREENFIELD CENTER -- Eugene R. "Mike" Schyberg; 72, of Coy Road, died unexpectedly Monday, Feb. 7, 2005, at his home. Born on Dec. 28, 1932, in Bellmore, Long Island, he was the sone of the late C. William and Fern (Albertson) Schyberg. Mr. Schyberg attended Saratoga High School. He joined the United States Marine Corps on Jan. 31, 1951, serving as a corporal in Korea during the Korean War until his discharge. He received the Korean Service Medal and the U.N. Service Medal. Mr. Schyberg was first married to Joan Rivette for 27 years. He then married Norma (Vidaurri) Alvord on June 28, 1989. The couple resided in the Corinth and Greenfield area for over 10 years. He was first employed at the International Paper Co. in Corinth as a paper machinist for 17 years. He then worked for the United States Postal Service in Corinth as a postal carrier for 28 years until his retirement in 1992. Mr. Schyberg enjoyed bowling and was a member of leagues at Hi-Rock in Saratoga Springs and at the Lake Luzerne Community Center. He was an avid golfer and was a member of the Brookhaven Golf Club in Greenfield. Mr. Schyberg enjoyed visiting his sons, walking his dog "Abby", and being outside in "Mike's Park". Besides his parents, one brother, James S. Schyberg, and one stepson, Alan Alvord, died before him. Survivors besides his wife of 15 years include two sons, Stephen Schyberg and his wife, Teresa of Tempe, Az., and Dr. Jeffrey Schyberg of Savannah, Ga.; three step-sons, Todd Alvord and his wife, Jan of Galway, Michael Alvord and his wife, Carla of Greenfield Center and Darrell Alvord and his wife, Kelley of Middle Grove; nine grandchildren, Erica and Victoria Schyberg of Tempe, Az., Cody, Lucas, Ashley, Christian, Victoria, Dillon and Connor; two brothers, William Schyberg and his wife, Doris of Duluth, Minn., and Donald Schyberg and his wife, Mary Lou of Orlando, Fla.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Services will be conducted at 11 a.m., Friday, Feb. 11, 2005 at the Densmore Funeral Home, Inc., 7 Sherman Ave., Corinth with the Rev. Richard Hoffman, chaplain of Saratoga Hospital, officiating. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m., Thursday at the funeral home. Members of the Horace D. Washburn American Legion Post 533 of Corinth will conduct a service at 8 p.m., Thursday at the funeral home. WEST RUPERT, Vt. -- Violetta C. Sherman, 104, died Monday, Feb. 7, 2005, at Orchard Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in North Granville, where she had been a resident since Feb. 8, 2002. She was born Nov. 6, 1900, in Hebron, the daughter of Isaac and Florence (Fisher) Wright. Violetta and her husband C. Austin operated a dairy farm in West Rupert for many years. Her hobbies included gardening, sewing, crocheting and spending time with her family. She was a member of the Church of Christ in West Rupert, Vt. Besides her parents, Violetta was predeceased by her husband, C. Austin, who died Dec. 10, 1961; seven sisters: Essie Ely, Effie Beattie, Flora Bentley, Bea Montgomery, Ada Potter, Grace V. Morey and Blanche Wright; and one brother, William Wright. Survivors include three sons, Charles Sherman of West Rupert, Elbert Sherman of Salem and Lewis Sherman of Frederick, Md.; her grandchildren: Adrienne Sherman of Greenwich, Andrew and Matthew Sherman of Frederick, Md., Steven Sherman and his wife, Laura, of Cambridge, Wendy Ward and her husband, Charlie, of West Rupert, Jonathan Sherman of Salem; a stepgranddaughter, Lynn Grant of Arlington, Vt.; great-grandchildren, Emily and Zachary Sherman, Katelynn, Allison and Josh Sherman and Tyler Brown; stepgreat-grandchildren, Travis and Tara Keys; a stepgreat-great- grandchild, Caden Keys; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. A funeral service will be held at the Rupert Cemetery in the spring. There will be no calling hours. Swift, Jane Kelly GLENS FALLS -- Jane Kelly Swift, 83 , passed away unexpectedly Saturday, Feb. 5, 2005, at Winter Park Hospital, Winter Park, Fla. She was surrounded by many loved ones. Jane was born in Staten Island, N.Y., on April 30, 1921. She was the daughter of the late Augusta (LeClair) and Joseph P. Kelly. Jane was raised in Glens Falls. She graduated from St. Mary's Academy in 1939. She then attended and graduated from Albany Business College in 1941. Jane was a Civil Defense volunteer during World War II. She trained others to observe and identify aircraft flying in Northern New York State during the conflict. Jane married John L. Swift on June 5, 1943, in Greenville, S.C. She and her husband raised four children. Since her husband was in the Air Force, Jane lived in many locations; Pampa, Texas, Munich, Germany, Mobile, Ala., Orlando, Fla. and Limestone, Maine. Even though she loved to experience the different locations, in her heart her home was always in the Adirondacks. Jane and the children moved back to Glens Falls in 1966, when John was sent to Vietnam. Soon after, John retired from the Air Force and the family remained in Glens Falls. Jane was an avid reader and incredibly knowledgeable about many subjects. She had keen interest in history and current politics. Jane had an unending curiosity about the history of her Irish heritage, the family's genealogy, and the Adirondacks. She had a great laugh, a beautiful smile, and the brightest blue eyes on earth, a wonderful sense of humor and an ability to tell the most entertaining and colorful stories of her experiences. Her life's passion however, truly was her family and friends. She had great faith in God and in that, she was always an inspiration to others. Besides her parents, her brothers Howard LaClair, Roger Kelly and Martin Kelly predeceased Jane. Jane is survived by her loving husband of 61 years, John Swift of Glens Falls, and her devoted children; her daughter Leslie and her husband, Clayton Dethlefsen of St. Petersburg, Fla., son David and wife, Cathy Swift of Queensbury, son Dan and wife, Kathie of Plattsburgh, and daughter Lynn and her husband, Ed Malaret of Nashua, N.H. Jane's grandchildren include Mark and his wife, Beth Dethlefsen of Manasass, Va., Robin (Dethlefsen) and her husband, Reed Hammond of St. Petersburg, Fla., Erin Dethlefsen of St. Petersburg, Fla., Ryan, Christen and Mary Swift of Queensbury, Kaden and Mike Swift of Plattsburgh, and Gabriel Malaret of Nashua, N.H. Jane's great grandchildren include Valerie Howard Dethelefsen and Shaen Holmes Dethlefsen and many nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Mary's Church, 62 Warren St. on Friday, Feb. 11, at 9:30 a.m., with the Rev. James Mackey, pastor, officiating. Internment will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery, South Glens Falls.
