"Dolly" TICONDEROGA/VIRGINIA -- Odella "Dolly" M. Armstrong, 92, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2005, at Augusta Medical Center in Staunton, Va., after a short illness. Born in Blue Ridge, N.Y., on Feb. 2, 1913, she was the last survivor of the 10 children born to Virginia and Ferdinand Charbonneau. Mrs. Armstrong had resided at Bright View at Baldwin Park since August 2004, after living in her home at 508 Victoria Drive, Staunton, Va. for 34 years. While in the work force, Dolly was an accountant. In her non-working hours she was an avid bridge player and enjoyed gardening and homemaking. She was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Church in Staunton, Va. for many years, and was active in several of their organizations. Other community work she did was with the Salvation Army and Kings' Daughters. Survivors include her husband, Dr. James A. Armstrong, retired president of Blue Ridge Community College; and many loving nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends may call Saturday, Feb. 12, from noon to 1:45 p.m. at Wilcox & Regan Funeral Home, 11 Algonkin St., Ticonderoga. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow on Saturday at 2 p.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church of Ticonderoga. The Rev. William G. Muench, pastor, will officiate, assisted by Dolly's nephew, the Rev. Mr. Elliott A. Shaw. The Rite of Committal will take place in the spring at the family plot of St. Mary's Parish Cemetery of Ticonderoga. In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to the missionary work of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, 126 North Augusta St., Staunton, VA 24401. Bogel, Anna Winifred WHITEHALL and ALBANY -- Anna Winifred Bogel, 98, formerly of Thurlow Terrace Apartments in Albany, and Adams Street in Whitehall, died Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2005, at Ann Lee Nursing Home in Colonie, following a brief illness. Published in the Post-Star on 2/10/2005. Gray, Jean Chenier GRANVILLE -- Jean Chenier Gray, 77, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2005, at Glens Falls Hospital. Born March 4, 1927, in Fort Edward, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Inza (O'Dell) Anderson. She was a 1945 graduate of Fort Edward High School. Jean retired from the Continental Insurance Co. in 1994. She was a former member of St. Mary's Church in Glens Falls. Jean enjoyed collecting teapots, knitting, ceramics, decorating, and was a great homemaker. She was predeceased by a brother, John Anderson; and a sister, Dorothy Gates. Survivors include her husband, Charles Gray, whom she married on March 2, 1992; a son, Jeffrey Chenier and his wife, Mary, of Seattle, Wash; two daughters, Mary Beth Downes and her husband, Steven, of Ballston Lake, and Gail Blinckmann and her husband, Glenn, of Colonie; six grandchildren: Kyle Chenier, Anya Noftsier, Tenagne Downes, Joseph Downes, and Melinda and Nicholas Blinckmann; and several nieces and nephews. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Mary's Church in Glens Falls. The Rite of Committal will be at Gerald B.H. Hoffman, David F. BOLTON LANDING -- David F. Hoffman, 71, of Lake Shore Drive, died unexpectedly, Thursday, Feb. 3, 2005, while vacationing in Florida. Born on Oct. 18, 1933, in Gowanda, N.Y., he was the son of the late Harold and Esther (Bloomer) Hoffman. David met and married Helen R. "Bobbie" Knowles on Sept. 4, 1954, in Denver, Colo., while attending hotel and restaurant management school at Denver University. Upon graduation in 1955, with a BSBA, David joined the Hilton Hotel Corp. in New York City. After training in Manhattan, the Hoffmans moved to Hartford, Conn., where David worked as personnel manager and went on to become a hotel general manager. He traveled for the corporation, working in Atlanta, Ga., Pittsburgh, Pa., and Tarrytown, N.Y. In 1963, David transferred to Hilton International, Inc., as general manager in Puerto Rico and thereafter to Trinidad, West Indies. In 1968, he was appointed Director-Manpower Development for Hilton International based in New York City, and in 1970, he was elected vice president. In 1983, David was promoted to a senior vice president for Hilton International. When Hilton International was purchased by Ladbrooke Co. in 1987, David moved to the new home office in London, England. Upon retirement in 1991, the Hoffmans returned to the USA to reside in Bolton Landing. David was a volunteer for High Peaks Hospice. He also was employed at the Hiland Golf Club. His retirement passions became golfing and the comaraderie with his golfing buddies. He was a member of the Sagamore Fitness Center, Bolton Landing, where he went routinely to continue his love of the hospitality industry. David also enjoyed boating on Lake George and wintering in Venice, Fla. Survivors include his wife of 50 years, "Bobbie" Hoffman of Bolton Landing; two children, Cynthia "Cindy" Jean (Hoffman) Mosscrop of Bolton Landing, and Gary Frank Hoffman and his wife, Elizabeth, of Lancaster, Pa.; two granddaughters, Julia Kaye Mosscrop of Bolton Landing and Kathleen Elizabeth Hoffman of Lancaster, Pa.; one sister, Susan Rew of Elkton, Md.; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. David was very proud to be known as Julia's grandpa at her various sporting events and Girl Scout events. Julia is a ninth- grade student at Bolton Central School. At David's request, there will be no public calling hours. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 21, at Caldwell Presbyterian Church, 71 Montcalm St., Lake George, with the Rev. Shirley A. Mosholder, pastor, officiating. A reception will follow at the church. Burial will be private at Bolton Rural Cemetery, Bolton Landing. Pelton Jr., Henry Lee GLENS FALLS -- Henry Lee Pelton Jr., 64, of Bacon Street, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, on Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2005, at Glens Falls Hospital, following a short illness. Born on Aug. 29, 1940, in Battle Creek, Mich., he was the son of the late Henry L. and Mary Rae (Loyer) Pelton Sr. After graduating from high school in Battle Creek, Mich., he served in the U.S. Army and then the Reserves from 1958 until 1978. In 1966, Henry married Barbara Jean Naugle. He worked at Hercules, Inc. in Queensbury, and as a foreman at General Electric Co. in Fort Edward. For a time, he also owned his own construction company in Hudson Falls, before moving to Florida, where he worked for Wells Fargo in West Palm Beach. Henry had very fond memories of working security at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games. He loved spending time with his four grandchildren. A brother, Arthur Loyer; a sister, Loretta Cole; and a dear friend, Arthur Gill; all died before him. Survivors include a son, Henry L. Pelton III and his wife, Judith, of Glens Falls; his four grandchildren: Loressa K. Pelton of Anaheim, Calif., Henry L. Pelton IV, MacKenzie R. Pelton and Benjamin J. Pelton, all of Glens Falls; his four sisters: Marylee Curtis of Fresno, Calif., Maxine Kritch of Eugene, Ore., Carrie Bell Lusk and Gertrude Masternik, both of Springport, Mich.; and several nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews. Friends are welcome to attend memorial calling hours from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday at Carleton Funeral Home, Inc., 136 Warren St. in Glens Falls. WEST RUPERT, Vt. -- Violetta C. Sherman, 104, died Monday, Feb. 7, 2005, at Orchard Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in North Granville, where she had been a resident since Feb. 8, 2002. She was born Nov. 6, 1900, in Hebron, the daughter of Isaac and Florence (Fisher) Wright. Violetta and her husband C. Austin operated a dairy farm in West Rupert for many years. Her hobbies included gardening, sewing, crocheting and spending time with her family. She was a member of the Church of Christ in West Rupert, Vt. Besides her parents, Violetta was predeceased by her husband, C. Austin, who died Dec. 10, 1961; seven sisters: Essie Ely, Effie Beattie, Flora Bentley, Bea Montgomery, Ada Potter, Grace V. Morey and Blanche Wright; and one brother, William Wright. Survivors include three sons, Charles Sherman of West Rupert, Elbert Sherman of Salem and Lewis Sherman of Frederick, Md.; her grandchildren: Adrienne Sherman of Greenwich, Andrew and Matthew Sherman of Frederick, Md., Steven Sherman and his wife, Laura, of Cambridge, Wendy Ward and her husband, Charlie, of West Rupert, Jonathan Sherman of Salem; a stepgranddaughter, Lynn Grant of Arlington, Vt.; great-grandchildren, Emily and Zachary Sherman, Katelynn, Allison and Josh Sherman and Tyler Brown; stepgreat-grandchildren, Travis and Tara Keys; a stepgreat-great- grandchild, Caden Keys; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. A funeral service will be held at the Rupert Cemetery in the spring. There will be no calling hours. Vandenburgh, 83, of Lake George, and formerly of Delmar, died Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2005, at Glens Falls Hospital. Mr. Vandenburgh was born in Albany on Sept. 15, 1921, the son of the late Herman and Agnes (Seitz) Vandenburgh. He honorably served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II, having been stationed in the North Atlantic. A 40-year Delmar resident, he was employed at the Delmar post office for 27 years before his retirement. Mr. Vandenburgh was an Adirondack woodsman and an avid fan of thoroughbred horse racing. He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Jayne (Brizzie) Vandenburgh; two sons, William H. Vandenburgh Jr. of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Herman H. Vandenburgh of Cambridge, Mass.; a daughter, Madge O'Connell of Glens Falls; two grandsons, William K. Vandenburgh of Philadelphia, Pa., and Evan T. O'Connell of Glens Falls; a sister, Dorothy Bradt-Weller of Delmar and a nephew, James Bradt of Freedom, N.H. A memorial service will be held at noon Saturday, Feb. 12, at Applebee Funeral Home, 403 Kenwood Ave., Delmar. Relatives and friends are invited to call at the funeral home after 11 a.m. Saturday. Williams, Mary (Baratto) BENNINGTON, Vt. -- Mary (Baratto) Williams, 87, formerly of Hoosick Falls, died Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2005, at Vermont Veterans Home in Bennington. She had resided there since 1988. She was the wife of the late Jerome Williams. Born on Aug. 10, 1917, in Cambridge, she was the daughter of the late Anthony and Clara (Messina) Baratto. She was educated at schools in Cambridge. In her earlier years, she worked at Mary McClellan Hospital and the Jerome Wright Seed Co., both in Cambridge. Mary enjoyed cooking her spaghetti dinner for her family on Sunday's. Besides her husband, she was predeceased by a sister, Lena Powell; and a brother, Joe Baratto. She is survived by a sister, Anna Bell of Hoosick Falls; a brother, Albert Baratto of Cambridge; and several nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 16, at the Four Chaplains All Faiths Memorial Chapel at the Vermont Veterans Home in Bennington. There will be no calling hours. Burial will be in the spring at St. Patrick's Cemetery in Cambridge. Arrangements are under the direction of Mahar Funeral Home, 43 Main St. in Hoosick Falls.
