"Dag" LAKE LUZERNE -- Ralph J. "Dag" Atwell, 88, of East River Drive, died Friday, Feb. 11, 2005, following a brief illness. Born on May 29, 1916, in Taunton, Mass., he was the son of the late Thomas and Estelle (Fuller) Atwell. Mr. Atwell attended Corinth High School. He joined the United States Army in 1940, serving as a staff sergeant during World War II, in the 89th Infantry Division and commanded a morter crew in the European Theater. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge, and other battles in the crossing of the Rhine. He received several combat medals and awards for valor. While in the Army, he also played basketball and softball. Mr. Atwell married Mary Pageroli on June 6, 1943, in Corinth. The couple resided in Lake Luzerne for more than 50 years. He was first employed for the Gill and Towers Dairy in Corinth and then worked at Bellamy's Dairy in Corinth. He also worked at A & P Grocery Store in Corinth for a few years and for the Corinth Telephone Co. as a telephone operator for several years. Mr. Atwell then worked for the International Paper Co. in Corinth for 40 years until his retirement in 1977. He was a member of the IP Quarter Century Club. He was a member of the S & L Hunting Club in West Stony Creek for many years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, skiing, snowmobiling and spending time with his family. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by two brothers, Lowell "Puggy" Atwell and Frances "Dobber" Atwell, and two sisters, Minnie Herrick and Agnes Chase. Survivors besides his wife of 61 years include one daughter, Laura C. Whitney of Lake Luzerne; two granddaughters, Gwendolyn Gill and her husband, David, of Chichester, N.H., and Elizabeth Whitney of Portland, Maine; one grandson, Nathan Whitney and his wife, Ileana, of Seattle, Wash.; one great-granddaughter, Isobella Gill; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 14, at Densmore Funeral Home, Inc., 7 Sherman Ave., Corinth. Spring burial, with military honors, will be at St. Mary's Cemetery, Corinth. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Members of the Horace D. Washburn American Legion Post 533 of Corinth will conduct a service at 8 p.m. Sunday, at the funeral home. Holden, Richard C. WHITEHALL -- Richard C. Holden, 74, died Thursday, Feb. 10, 2005, at Albany Medical Center in Albany. He was born on Dec. 14, 1930, in Rutland, Vt., the son of Clarence F. and Jennie (Scofield) Holden. He was a graduate of Rochester High School, and served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict. Richard was employed as a local builder/general contractor for many years, and also was employed by General Electric for 12 years. He was an avid hunter, hiker and outdoorsman as well as an avid skier and one of the original members of the Killington Ski Patrol. Richard was predeceased by his parents, a brother, Kenneth Holden, and a grandson, Jamie Atwood. He is survived by his wife and best friend of 28 years, Carolyn (Simpson) Holden of Whitehall; two sons, Michael Holden and his wife, Maggie, of Castleton, Vt.; Kelly Holden and his wife, Carmen, of Bristol, Conn.; one daughter, Shelly Hathaway of New Britain, Conn.; one stepson, Gordon Merrill and his wife, Erin, of Rochester, Vt.; one stepdaughter, Carmen Deininger and her husband, Bill, of East Stroudsburg, Pa.; two sisters, Millie Sherwin and her husband, Al, of Rutland, Vt., and Judy Holden, of Rutland, Vt.; a sister-in-law, Becky Holden of Covina, Calif.; 13 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. There will be no calling hours. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 19, at the Federated Church of Rochester, with pastor, the Rev. Bill Daniels officiating. Ziehm, Hanna Phoebe BUSKIRK -- Hanna Phoebe Ziehm, 96, formerly of Morris Road, died peacefully at Hoosick Falls Health Center on Thursday, Feb. 10, 2005. She was the widow of George Henry Ziehm. Born Friday, Dec. 11, 1908, in Maine, Minn., she was the daughter of Joshua L. and Zoda Chase Linne. She attended the Northfield School for Girls. Before her marriage, Phoebe worked for New York Telephone Co. She brought up her family in Albany and moved to Buskirk in 1966, when she and George bought the dairy farm that her son and grandsons still run. She lived on the farm until she moved to the Danforth Adult Care Center less than two years ago. She was at the Health Center for less than a week. Phoebe loved encouraging and supporting young people in using the library and in reading projects. She was a volunteer at the Westmere School Library in Westmere (town of Guilderland) for many years and at the Cambridge School Library for 10 years. She was also a "Grandmother Volunteer" at the Bellevue Day School in Greenwich for 13 years. She was an accomplished knitter and made latch hook rugs. Phoebe was a member of The First Unitarian Church of Albany and an active participant of the Buskirk Reformed Church. Her siblings, Milton, Albert, Charles and Wendell Linne, all died before her. Survivors include two children and their spouses, Franklin C. and Terry Ziehm of Buskirk, and Eleanor F. and Peter White of Latham; six grandchildren; and a great-grandson. A memorial celebration of Phoebe's life will be held on Sunday, Feb. 13, at 1 p.m. at South Cambridge United Methodist (due to the unfortunate closing of the Buskirk Reformed Church). The church is located on county Route 59A. The Rev. Richard Gratz will conduct the service. Her ashes will be buried with her husband at Memory's Gardens, Colonie. Remembering Phoebe's love of libraries, the family requests memorial donations be made to the Cambridge Library, 21 West Main St., Cambridge, NY 12816.
