A native of Green Bay, Wis., Crikelair attended St. Norbert's College in Neenah and graduated from the University of Wisconsin, Madison Medical School in 1944. He was active in the military during World War II, serving a lieutenant in the Medical Corps of the U.S. Navy and with the Marine Corps. His military career also included service during the Korean conflict. He completed surgery residences in Detroit and New York. His association with Columbia's College of Physicians and Surgeons spanned nearly three decades. His work with scouting earned him the prestigious Silver Beaver Award in 1971. He also received the Laurence G. Meads Award form the Young Men's Christian Association for outstanding service to youth.
