(Forde) WINCHESTER, Mass. -- Ellen L. (Forde) Barden of Winchester, Mass., passed away Monday, Jan. 17, 2005, as the result of a car accident. Ellen was born April 26, 1951, in San Francisco. She graduated from Lesley College in 1984 with a B.A. degree in business. Ellen was a member of the Parent Teachers Association, a volunteer and board director for youth baseball, an active volunteer and member of the Hope Christian Church, missionary for the organization of Hope for the Children of Hati, and active in the Wrestling Boosters Club. She enjoyed reading, knitting and crossword puzzles. Helen is the beloved wife of Claude Barden; loving mother of Colin and Evan, all of Winchester, Mass.; dear daughter of Jeanne L. Forde of California and the late Edward A. Forde. She is also survived by her brothers: Edward Forde of Nebraska, Kelly Forde of Hong Kong, Jeffrey Forde of California, Andrew Forde of California, and Peter Forde of New York; and many cousins, nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 27, at the Hope Christian Church, 58 Mount Vernon St., Winchester, Mass. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Visiting hours will be held at the church today, Jan. 27, from 4 to 8 p.m. Interment will be private. Arrangements are under the direction of Lane Funeral Home, 760 Main St., Winchester, Mass. Burnham, James D. WHITEHALL -- James D. Burnham, 56, of Whitehall, died unexpectedly Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2005, at Glens Falls Hospital of a massive heart attack. He was born on June 6, 1948, in Corinth, the son of the late Kenneth A. and Eula Mae (Cornelius) Burnham. Mr. Burnham attended and graduated from Queensbury High School. He was employed by General Electric Co. in Fort Edward for more than 35 years. Mr. Burnham and his wife, D. Jean MacLeod, were united in marriage on Jan. 9, 1988, and recently celebrated their 17th wedding anniversary. He was a member and past master of Mount Hope-Phoenix Lodge No. 96, Free and Accepted Masons of the State of New York in Fort Ann, a member and past high priest of Warrensburg Chapter No. 42, Royal Arch Masons of the State of New York in Warrensburg, and a member of Saratoga Court No. 55, Order of the Amaranth of the State of New York. Mr. Burnham enjoyed fishing and hunting, but most of all spending time with his family and especially his grandchildren. Survivors include his wife, D. Jean MacLeod of Whitehall; one stepson, Alexander Hyatt and his wife, Ginger, of Whitehall; two stepdaughters, Heather Turner and her husband, Michael, of Warrensburg, and Janelle Palmer and her husband, Joseph, of Whitehall; four grandchildren: Jacob and Jesse Hyatt of Whitehall, and Elizabeth and Brandon Turner of Warrensburg; one brother, Walter R. Burnham of Lake Luzerne; and his two daughters, Tara Burnham of Lake Luzerne and Mary Lou Allen of the town of Day. He is also survived by his stepmother and four stepbrothers. A memorial service will be conducted on Saturday, Jan. 29, at 2 p.m. at Michael G. Angiolillo Funeral Home, 210 Broadway, Whitehall, with the Rev. C. Don Wheeler, pastor of the United Methodist Church of Whitehall, officiating, followed by a Masonic funeral service. Burial will be in the spring at Mount Herman Cemetery, Queensbury. Published in the Post-Star on 1/27/2005. Cranston, Betty J. LAKE LUZERNE -- Betty J. Cranston, age 85, of Lake Avenue, died Wednesday morning, Jan. 26, 2005, at her home. Born on Jan. 10, 1920, in Schenectady, she was the daughter of George and Elizabeth (Belding) Fishburn. Upon graduating from high school in Schenectady and Practical Nursing School in Albany, she was employed at several area hospitals, nursing homes and private duty nursing positions. She served as manager of "Health Haven," a rest home on Lake Luzerne run by Dr. Bloom in 1954. On April 11, 1955, she married George H. Cranston at St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Lake Luzerne, after which she became a real estate broker, working with her husband. Mr. Cranston died on Sept. 23, 1969. Following his death, Betty returned to nursing and was employed at the Wilton Developmental Center for several years and at Albany County Nursing Home. Betty was a pioneer in the struggle to secure rights for people with disabilities. Her desire to be released from a nursing home and be cared for at home was brought to Gov. Pataki and culminated in a bill which calls for a policy making council to ensure that people with disabilities can choose to live at home or in community settings rather than institutions. Betty was an active member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church, where she served as treasurer for several years and Altar Guild director. She enjoyed quilting, cross word puzzles, gardening, flowers and her poodle "Mokey." She also enjoyed traveling with her lifelong friend, Carol Rider. One of their favorite destinations was the coast of Maine. Betty was predeceased by an infant son and a step-son, George R. Cranston. Survivors include one son, David W. Cranston of Lake Luzerne; a stepdaughter, Jacqueline Ireland and her husband, George, of Niceville, Fla.; one brother, the Rev. Barclay B. Fishburn and his wife, Ruth, of Kissimmee, Fla. and Lake Luzerne; five stepgrandchildren: Michael Cranston, Michelle LaMora, Bruce Ireland, Thimothy Ireland and George Ireland; and several stepgreat-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins. Koss, 81, formerly of Brightwood Street, died Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2005, at the Indian River Nursing Home, Granville. Born on Sept. 1, 1923, in Fort Edward, she was the daughter of the late Andrew and Mary (Mischick) Koss. Mary worked at Clarks Glove Factory, McMullens Shirt Factory, and later helped clean houses for many people in the area. Mary was a communicant at St. Joseph's Church, Fort Edward. She enjoyed writing letters, sewing, collecting postcards with different points of interest in the area, and taking long walks around Fort Edward. Mary loved spending time with her family, especially on the holidays. Besides her parents, Mary was also predeceased by her brother and sister-in-law, John and Irene (Bailey) Koss. Survivors include two nieces, Susan Shaw and her husband, Clarence, of South Glens Falls, and JoAnne Trombley of Fort Edward; one grandniece, Dianne Petteys and her husband, Bert, of Wilton; two grandnephews, Steven Shaw and his wife, Elizabeth, of Mahopac, N.Y., and Ryan Shaw and his wife, Shannon, of Saratoga Springs. Rice, Charles Lucien FORT EDWARD -- Charles Lucien Rice, 82, of Route 196, went into the loving arms of the Lord on Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2005, at Glens Falls Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. Born on Dec. 3, 1922, in Fort Edward, he was the son of the late Lucien and Harriet (Lansing) Rice. On July 21, 1946, he married Grace Mae Burns in Fort Edward. In his lifetime, Charlie served four years in the Army Glider Unit. He was also a medic. Charlie was a World War II veteran, who went overseas at the end of the Battle of the Bulge. Upon his return from service, he worked 55 years for Local 773 as a plumber and steamfitter. Charlie retired at the age of 62. His hobbies included working on cars and watching stock car races. He was the owner of a stock car No. CM4. Charlie also loved playing cards, camping, fishing and driving his John Deere tractors. He was an avid yardman and took great pride in his lawn. Charlie loved his tractors, the outdoors and creating a beautiful pond for his wife. He will be greatly missed and will create a void in the many lives he's touched. Besides his parents, Charlie is predeceased by his two brothers, Harry and Eugene Rice, his sister, Mae Winslow, two brothers-in-law, William and James Burns, his very special son-in-law, Beecher Fuller II, his stepgranddaughter, Tracey Cook, and his ever-helpful nephew, Ernie Winslow. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 1/2 years, Grace Mae Burns Rice; his five adoring daughters: Anna Mae Tifft and her husband, Martin, of Fort Edward, Harriet Strong and her husband, Thomas Strong Sr., of Fort Edward, Bettilou Barrett and her husband, Donny, of Fort Edward, Gloria Cook and her husband, Bill, of South Glens Falls, and Shirley Rice-Casagrande and her husband, Bob, of Fort Edward; his loving grandchildren: Kelly Grant and her husband, John Tracey Dashnaw, Gracie Wilson and her husband, LeRoy, Chuck Strong, Tom Strong Jr., Susan Strong, Beecher Fuller and his wife, Wendy; his stepgrandchildren: Brenda Barrett, Kim Jump and her husband, Frank, Donald Barrett and his wife, Amy, Diedra Cook and her companion, Earl Lilton, Lisa Cook and Joelle Cook; his great-grandchildren, who knew him best as "Poppo", Ashley and Katie-Lyn Grant, Sierra, Thomas III and Geneva Strong, Little "B", Brandon and Brianna Fuller and several stepgreat-grandchildren. Shima, Andrew QUEENSBURY -- Andrew Shima, 85, formerly of John Street, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2005, at Stanton Nursing Centre, Queensbury. Born March 23, 1919, in New York City, he was the son of the late Gladys Airhart. He was employed for many years by American Handling Equipment, working his way to vice president. Andrew also lived in New Jersey for several years, moving to Queensbury after his wife's passing, to enjoy the remainder of his years with his daughter, Gladys. Through Andrew's job he traveled the world. He loved visiting Greece, Japan, Italy, France and many other places. His favorite place was Hawaii. He enjoyed cooking and learned to master fine cuisine. His family enjoyed all the holiday meals he would lavishly prepare. Shima also loved dining out and believed meals were to be enjoyed with many courses to be savored. He was a man with a lot of heart and spirit. His loving wife, Christine Bailey Shima, predeceased him. His son-in-law, whom he truly enjoyed, Louie Montalvo, and one brother, Bill Shima, also predeceased him. Survivors include his daughter, Gladys Montalvo of Queensbury; two sons, Andrew Shima and his wife, Eleanor, of Florida, and Richard Shima and his wife, Carol, of Abu Dhabi; a daughter-in-law, Janice Shima of New Jersey. His grandchildren were special to him, they include: Debbie and Jeff Gonyea of Rensselaer, Phyllis Carpenter of Pennsylvania, Steven, Paul and Kristi Shima of New Jersey, Andrew and Tara Shima of Florida, Christine Shima of New Jersey, Theresa Shima DeMauro of New Jersey, and Allie, Richard, and Justin Shima of Abu Dhabi. He was very proud of his great-grandchildren: Michael and Alyssa Gonyea, Bryan and Robert Carpenter, Jonathon Trotter, Justin and Sydney Shima. He enjoyed three years with his caregiver, Tina Bapp, and her family of Queensbury. Funeral services will be conducted at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 29, at Sullivan-Minahan & Potter Funeral Home, 407 Bay Road, Queensbury. Smith, 87, of 32 Ridge Ave., passed away Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2005, at Glens Falls Hospital following a short illness. Born March 11, 1917, in Philadelphia, Pa., he was the son of the late Stephen and Catherine (Lane) Smith. John was raised in Atlantic City and Absecon, N.J. He moved to the north-country with the CCC and met his wife to be. He married Louise N. Hewitt on March 20, 1936, in Warrensburg. John was a truck driver by trade and delivered pulp wood for many years. He also drove tracker trailer following his lumber days. Truck hauling was his life and he also enjoyed reading. Besides his wife, Louise, who passed away on Jan. 8, 2001, after 65 years of marriage, his brothers, Stephen and Joseph also died before him. Survivors include his four children: John Smith Jr. of Warrensburg, Robert Smith and his wife, Lanette, of Athol, Constance Stanczyk and her husband, Richard, of West Winfield, and Alan Smith and his wife, Dianna, of Charleston, S.C.; nine grandsons; five granddaughters; and several great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins. Herman Arthur Underwood, 83, of Chateau Cornwall, Ontario, formerly of Canton, died Thursday, Jan. 13, 2005, at Cornwall Community Hospital. Born Dec. 13, 1921, in Kingsbury, he was the son of Arthur and Mabel Farley Underwood. The Rev. Underwood pastored several churches over the span of 60 years throughout New York, eastern Ontario and Quebec, including the First Baptist Church in Canton. Survivors include his wife of 57 years, the former Elizabeth K. Reisert of Canton; three sons and their wives: William A. Underwood and Joanne, of Minoa, N.Y., David C. Underwood and Beth, of Chittenango, N.Y., and Jonathan Underwood and Nancy, of Cornwall, Ontario; three daughters and their husbands: Katharine E. and Russell Tojdowski of Manchester, N.Y., Jean M. and Daryl Williams of Bogart, Ga., and Ruth A. and James Mills of Slatersville, R.I.; three sisters: Jean Harrold, Lena Coons and Kay Nicholson, all of Queensbury; 17 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 17, at Fellowship Baptist Church in Cornwall, with the Rev. David Irwin officiating. Spring burial will be at Woodlawn Cemetery in Cornwall. "Whitey" White, 76, of Riverside Drive, died Monday, Jan. 24, 2005, at Stratton V.A. Medical Center in Albany, after an extended illness. Born Sept. 4, 1928, in Easton, he was the son of the late Walter and Vivian Booker White. Mr. White grew up and was educated in Stillwater, where he lived most of his life. He was an equipment repairman for the General Electric Co. in Schenectady, before retirement. Previously, he was a carpenter for Ralph Walsh Constructions of Stillwater for a number of years. Mr. White served with the U.S. Army from 1953-1955. A sportsman, he enjoyed fishing and hunting, his camp near Piseco Lake, and in later years, enjoyed golf. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife of 26 years, Marilyn McArthur White, who died in 2000; along with his brother, Faxon White; and a sister, Alice Britt. Survivors include his stepchildren: Candy Hack, Cindy Jenkins, and Tammy LeClaire, all of Fort Ann, and Paul Rustin of Queensbury. He is also survived by his nieces and nephews: Robert White and Dorothy Paige, both of Greenwich, David and Michael Britt, both of Stillwater and Amy Hefner of Saratoga; along with grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and grand nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday at DeVito-Salvadore Funeral Home, 39 South Main St., Mechanicville. Burial with military honors will be held at Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday starting at noon.
