FORT EDWARD -- Elizabeth M. Brady, 96, a resident of Fort Hudson Nursing Home, formerly of Feeder Dame Road, South Glens Falls and Pilot Knob, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2005, following a short illness, surrounded by her loving family. Born on July 22, 1908, in Hudson Falls, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Minnie (Elms) LaBelle. Elizabeth graduated from St. Mary's Academy in Glens Falls. She retired in 1960 from Embassy Shirt Co. as a supervisor. Elizabeth was an avid bowler and also enjoyed hunting, fishing and her camp on Pilot Knob. She was predeceased by her husband, James T. Brady; two brothers, Lawrence LaBelle and Leo LaBelle; two sisters, Adeline Lawson and Gladys Tracy; and several nephews and nieces. Survivors include five nephews: Edward Tracy and his wife, Susan, of South Glens Falls, David LaBelle and his wife, Kathy, of Glens Falls, Harold Lawson of Corinth, Kent Lawson of Corinth, and Alan Lawson of Clifton Park; a niece, Helen Hoague of West Palm, Fla.; and several great and great-great-nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her extended family of the nursing staff and aides at Delaware and Hudson Wing, Fort Hudson Nursing Home; her roommate, friend and poker playing partner, Clara Connors; and many other close friends. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 30, at Singleton-Healy Funeral Home, 407 Bay Road, Queensbury. There will be no calling hours. Burial will take place in the spring at St. Alphonsus Cemetery. Published in the Post-Star on 1/28/2005. Cranston, Betty J. LAKE LUZERNE -- Betty J. Cranston, age 85, of Lake Avenue, died Wednesday morning, Jan. 26, 2005, at her home. Born on Jan. 10, 1920, in Schenectady, she was the daughter of George and Elizabeth (Belding) Fishburn. Upon graduating from high school in Schenectady and Practical Nursing School in Albany, she was employed at several area hospitals, nursing homes and private duty nursing positions. She served as manager of "Health Haven," a rest home on Lake Luzerne run by Dr. Bloom in 1954. On April 11, 1955, she married George H. Cranston at St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Lake Luzerne, after which she became a real estate broker, working with her husband. Mr. Cranston died on Sept. 23, 1969. Following his death, Betty returned to nursing and was employed at the Wilton Developmental Center for several years and at Albany County Nursing Home. Betty was a pioneer in the struggle to secure rights for people with disabilities. Her desire to be released from a nursing home and be cared for at home was brought to Gov. Pataki and culminated in a bill which calls for a policy making council to ensure that people with disabilities can choose to live at home or in community settings rather than institutions. Betty was an active member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church, where she served as treasurer for several years and Altar Guild director. She enjoyed quilting, cross word puzzles, gardening, flowers and her poodle "Mokey." She also enjoyed traveling with her lifelong friend, Carol Rider. One of their favorite destinations was the coast of Maine. Betty was predeceased by an infant son and a step-son, George R. Cranston. Survivors include one son, David W. Cranston of Lake Luzerne; a stepdaughter, Jacqueline Ireland and her husband, George, of Niceville, Fla.; one brother, the Rev. Barclay B. Fishburn and his wife, Ruth, of Kissimmee, Fla. and Lake Luzerne; five stepgrandchildren: Michael Cranston, Michelle LaMora, Bruce Ireland, Thimothy Ireland and George Ireland; and several stepgreat-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins. Walter SARATOGA SPRINGS -- The Rev. Walter de Velder, 97, died Saturday, Jan. 22, 2005, in Saratoga Springs. He was a lifelong missionary of the Reformed Church in America in China, the Philippines, Hong Kong and Taiwan. Walter was born on May 17, 1907, in Boyden, Iowa to Franklin and Aartje de Velder. He received his B.A. from Hope College, Holland, Michigan in 1929. After a three year mission assignment to Xiamen, China, he entered New Brunswick Theological Seminary, graduating in 1935. He won a fellowship to study at the University of Utrecht, Netherlands. He was fluent in the Dutch language and eventually in Chinese. Upon his return he was ordained and commissioned at First Reformed Church, New Brunswick, N.J. In 1936, his mission assignment was to Xiamen, China. In 1940, Walter's first wife, Margaret Otte, daughter of R.C.A. missionaries, died giving birth to a son, Philip. Later Walter married Harriet Boot, missionary nurse, also a daughter of China missionaries. Together they had four children. Their lives were often filled with danger. In 1944, they became refugees and were flown over the Himalayas into India by the 14th Air Force of Chennault's Flying Tigers. At the end of World War II, in 1945, Walter, was asked to re-open the English Reformed Church in Amsterdam, Netherlands, which had been used by the German navy during the war years. Eventually returning to China they were once again forced to leave when the Communist took power in 1949. After four years in Cebu, Philippines, Walter and family moved to Hong Kong to work with the Church of Christ in China, Hong Kong Council. He helped refugees through Church World Service, taught at Chung Chi College, served as treasurer for many missions and was a chaplain to the U.S. Navy, who used Hong Kong for R & R. In 1972, Walter and Harriet retired but soon volunteered to help in Taiwan. In 1981, they made a trip back to Xiamen, China, where they had reunions with Christian friends not seen for 30 years. Since 1986, Walter lived at Embury Apartments in Saratoga Springs. He was a member of the Golden Kiwanis, volunteered at Wesley Health Care and was a member of the Old Saratoga Reformed Church, Schuylerville, and the R.C.A. Classis of Schenectady. Walter loved music and travel. He participated in the Hong Kong Oratorio Society for 17 years and made numerous trips around the world. Walter's love for God translated into a great love for people. He was a loving missionary and friend, assisting countless numbers of people throughout his life. His wife of 59 years, Harriet, and his son, Philip, preceded him in death. Survivors include one daughter and three sons and their families: Margaret and Edward Hougen of Boston, Mass. (children, Sarah and Edward); Dirck and Marielle de Velder of Paris, France (children, Marc, Sabrina and Alan); John de Velder of New Brunswick, N.J. (children, Rebecca and David); and David and Joyce de Velder of Schuylerville (children, Nathaniel and Mikael); great-grandchildren include: Vladimir, Maximillian, Fiona, Thomas, Tabitha, Theodore and Tristan. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 19, at the Old Saratoga Reformed Church, Schuylerville. Burial will be at Prospect Hill Cemetery, Schuylerville. Feingold, Dr. Joseph PHOENIX, Ariz. -- Dr. Joseph Feingold, 92, raised in Brooklyn, and a longtime resident of Fort Edward, died Saturday, Jan. 22, 2005, in Phoenix, Ariz. In his later years Dr. Feingold lived in Grosse Ile, Mich. amongst family. Dr. Feingold was a first generation American, born in Fleischman, N.Y. on Dec. 12, 1912. Though not religious, he was fiercely proud of his Jewish heritage, often telling stories of the immigrant experience of his parents, Charles Feingold and the former Bessie Feinstein. He attended the University of Michigan, graduating Phi Beta Kappa in 1933. In 1937, he received his medical degree from the University of Michigan's Medical School. During World War II, Dr. Feingold served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps in the European Theater and attained the rank of Major. In August 2004, he was very proud and pleased to visit the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C. In 1940, Dr. Feingold and his wife, the former Ruth Bartlett, settled in Fort Edward. He was the quintessential small town physician, carrying a black bag and making house calls. For his 90th birthday celebration, he was thrilled to receive hundreds of well wishes from former colleagues, patients and their families. Dr. Feingold was a voracious reader, a lover of history, and a strong patient advocate. He was predeceased by his wife Ruth. Dr. Feingold is survived by four daughters: Estelle (George) Bletsas of Grosse Ile, Mich.; Margaret (Charles) Owens of Grosse Ile, Mich.; Lois (Laurence) Feingold-Taff of Cabin John, Md.; and Barbara (David) Chardavoyne of San Antonio, Texas. He is also survived by seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Kelly, 72, of Miner Road, died Thursday, Jan. 27, 2005, at Saratoga Hospital following a long courageous battle with cancer. Born on Jan. 18, 1933, in Corinth, he was the son of the late John and Nellie Mae (Elger) Kelly. Mr. Kelly attended Corinth High School. He joined the United States Army in 1950, serving as a corporal during the Korean War until his discharge in 1952. He fought in several battles, receiving the Army's sharpshooter award and several other medals. Mr. Kelly was first married to Mary Ann Brennan in 1957. The couple resided in South Corinth for many years. She died Sept. 10, 1999, following 42 years of marriage. He married Sandra L. (Daniels) Stewart on Oct. 25, 2003. Mr. Kelly owned and operated Bern's Auto Body in South Corinth for many years. He loved to restore vintage automobiles, and enjoyed taking his cars to car shows throughout the northeast. Mr. Kelly enjoyed his motorcycles, model airplanes and visiting with his many friends and his family. He also enjoyed drag racing at area race tracks with his daughter, Marcia, and with his friend, Rick Robbins. Besides his wife and his parents, one daughter, Marcia Lynn Kelly, died Nov. 15, 1997; and one brother, Andrew Potter, also died before him. Survivors besides his wife include one sister, Ada Baker of Corinth; one stepdaughter, Donna Harper and her husband, Greg, of Hudson Falls; three stepsons, William Stewart Jr. and his fiancee, Cheryl Clayton, of Lake Luzerne, Tim Stewart and his wife, Stephene, of Marino Valley, Calif., and John Mulligan and his wife, Monique, of Corinth; seven grandchildren: Cody, Karleigh, Jacqueline, Josh, Brandon, Tyler and Bradley; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins; a special nephew, Ray Baker Jr. of South Corinth; and he especially enjoyed his niece, Alicia Baker and his granddaughter, Karleigh Stewart. Leroux, Bonnie QUEENSBURY -- Our beloved mother, Bonnie Leroux, 63, passed away Thursday, Jan. 27, 2005, surrounded by her family, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born on Jan. 11, 1942, in Glens Falls, Bonnie was the daughter of Arthur R. Potvin and Evelyn R Caprood Potvin. Bonnie grew up in Hudson Falls. She moved to South Glens Falls, and it is here that she started a family of her own. She was a wonderful mother. She created a close loving family with her children, her parents, and her siblings at her side. Bonnie made many friends along the way and will be missed more than words can say. It will be like starting our lives over without her. Bonnie was predeceased by her mother, Evelyn Rita Caprood; her father, Arthur Richard Potvin; her sister, Rita Delores Johnson; her daughter, Kimberly Marie Leroux; and a nephew, Arthur Richard Johnson. Survivors include her children: Sean Patrick Lyng, Kelleen Potvin, Kathleen Leroux and Kerry Leroux; her grandchildren: Joshua Caprood, John Caprood, Kaitlin Leroux, Jacob Leroux Dumont; one great-granddaughter, Kimberly Lyng; and a brother, Richard Paul Potvin. Born in Brant Lake, she was the daughter of the late John Royal and Kate (Bolton) Bennett. Mrs. Mahoney was a retired secretary for the town of Chester Board of Appeals. She was formerly employed by Upstate Telephone Co. as a telephone operator, a bookkeeper for the former Chestertown-Horicon Bank in Chestertown, and tax collector for Chestertown Central School. Kaye will be remembered as a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She was predeceased by one sister, Elizabeth Winslow. Survivors include her husband of 47 years, Joseph D. Mahoney, whom she married April 21, 1957; three sons, John J. Mahoney of Palm Springs, Calif., Donald P. Mahoney and his wife, Erika, of Brant Lake, and James M. McCarthy, 78, of Deer Run, and a former resident of Fort Edward, passed away Thursday, Jan. 27, 2005, at her home. Born in Fort Edward on Jan. 9, 1927, she was the daughter of the late Francis and Alice (Gallagher) King. Mary was a graduate of Fort Edward High School, Class of 1945. On April 13, 1953, she married John McCarthy at St. Joseph's Church, Fort Edward. She was a communicant of St. Joseph's Church, a charter member of Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Court Morrissey, a member of the Fort Edward Branch of the Glens Falls Hospital Guild and a member of the Red Hat Society, "Red Hot Teezeers" chapter. Mary loved to spend her free time golfing with her husband and friends. She was a member of the Tee-Bird Country Club and the first woman president of the Tee-Bird Board of Directors. She was also a member of the Tee-Bird Women's Golf Association and served on many committees. She enjoyed bowling, playing cards, and going out to lunch with the girls. Mary had a wonderful sense of humor and was always laughing. Her family and friends will miss her. Her greatest joy was spending time with her children and grandchildren. Besides her parents, her brother, John King, and her sister, Jayne King LaSarso, predeceased her. Prevost, Elizabeth Estelle Ann "Betty" FORT ANN -- Elizabeth "Betty" Estelle Ann (Horton, Cooper) Prevost, 72, of Fort Ann died Wednesday January 26, 2005, at the Glens Falls Hospital. Born Feb. 8, 1932, in Ossining, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Leroy M. and Elizabeth E. (Taxter) Horton. Mrs. Prevost attended the Immaculate Heart of Mary School and graduated from Ossining High School. She moved to Fort Ann in 1957. Mrs. Prevost was a member of St. Mary's Church in Glens Falls. She had a passion for cooking, gardening and old movies. Besides her parents, her first husband, Clarence R. "Coop" Cooper Jr., her second husband, John M. Prevost, and her two sons, Jeffrey R. Cooper and Clarence R. Cooper III, predeceased her. She was the proud mother of four surviving children who are as followed: Steven A. Cooper of Ohio, Raymond M. Cooper of Massachusetts, Jonathan M. Cooper of New York, and Alida M. Kahn of Florida; her eight grandchildren: Sherry, Kimberly, Justin, Joann, Ashley, Sarah, Kyle, and Kelly; and her two great-grandchildren, Ashlee and Cassandra, also survive her. WARRENSBURG -- John L. Smith, 87, of 32 Ridge Ave., passed away Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2005, at Glens Falls Hospital following a short illness. Born March 11, 1917, in Philadelphia, Pa., he was the son of the late Stephen and Catherine (Lane) Smith. John was raised in Atlantic City and Absecon, N.J. He moved to the north-country with the CCC and met his wife to be. He married Louise N. Hewitt on March 20, 1936, in Warrensburg. John was a truck driver by trade and delivered pulp wood for many years. He also drove tracker trailer following his lumber days. Truck hauling was his life and he also enjoyed reading. Besides his wife, Louise, who passed away on Jan. 8, 2001, after 65 years of marriage, his brothers, Stephen and Joseph also died before him. Survivors include his four children: John Smith Jr. of Warrensburg, Robert Smith and his wife, Lanette, of Athol, Constance Stanczyk and her husband, Richard, of West Winfield, and Alan Smith and his wife, Dianna, of Charleston, S.C.; nine grandsons; five granddaughters; and several great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins. "Betty" St. John, 81, of Woodard Avenue, died Thursday, Jan. 27, 2005, at the home of her daughter, Susan Woodcock in Corinth, following a long battle with cancer. She was surrounded by her loving family and visited by caring friends. Born on April 8, 1923, in Corinth, she was the daughter of the late Floyd and Martha (MacDonald) LaFountain. She married Kenneth St. John on June 9, 1943. The couple resided in Hadley for many years. He died in May of 1984, following 41 years of marriage. Mrs. St. John was employed at Cluett-Peabody Shirt Factory in Corinth for many years. She was a member of the Tri-Town Seniors, and enjoyed traveling and going on trips with them. She also was an avid bingo player, and enjoyed reading, bowling, and scratch off tickets. Known as "Short Stuff," she was a ball of energy with a great sense of humor, and will be greatly missed. Besides her husband and her parents, one infant son, Charles Michael St. John, died before her.
