She was born Jan. 31, 1920, in West Hebron, the daughter of Lewis A. and Alberta J. (McCauley) Matteson. May was a 1936 graduate of Salem Washington Academy and had received a degree in nursing. She was very active in community affairs including the Two to Read program at the Salem Central School, a charter member and secretary of the Hebron Volunteer Fire Co. Auxiliary for many years, a member of the Hebron Ladies Literary League, a member and secretary of the Methodist Ladies Guild, member and secretary of the Hebron Preservation Society, member of the Jolly Dozen, and a member and holder of several offices of the West Hebron United Methodist Church, the Hebron Grange and the Al Bain Fan Club, where she was secretary. May was a local news correspondent for the Washington County Post, Granville Sentinel, the Journal Press and The Post- Star. Her hobbies included crocheting, sewing, reading, quilting and traveling with the fan club. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by one sister, Madeline Traver. Survivors include her husband of 65 years, Willard Bain of West Hebron; three children: Allan W. Bain and his wife, Kathy, of West Hebron, Louise B. Breason and friend, David Rich, of Gansevoort, and Karen J. St. Mary and her husband, Gary, of Greenwich; five grandchildren: John Bain and his wife, Denise, Kelly Bain-Lacoff and her husband, Jeffrey, David Beattie, Robert St. Mary and his wife, Elaine, and Matthew St. Mary; nine great-grandchildren: Marissa, Kegan, Anastasia, Brice, Briant, Calista, Madeline, Jonathan and Isaac; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. A funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 3, at West Hebron United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Debbie Earthrowl, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the spring at Prospect Hill Cemetery in Argyle. "Sally" Blakeman, 75, of Seventh Avenue, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family on Saturday, Jan. 29, 2005, at her home. Born on Oct. 31, 1929, in Glens Falls, she was the daughter of the late Howard and Agnes (Bain) Twiss. She was a graduate of Hudson Falls High School. In October of 1950, she married George Blakeman, in Hudson Falls. Sally was the mother of 10 children. Her life was her family. She had a wonderful sense of humor and was very sensitive toward her children's welfare. Sally enjoyed gardening and tending her roses. She loved going to Atlantic City with her husband. Besides her parents, Sally was predeceased by a son, James David Blakeman, who passed away in April of 1982, a daughter, Gina Blakeman Wardell, who passed away in August of 2002, and her sister, Helen "Babe" Wood. Survivors include her loving husband of 55 years, George Blakeman of Hudson Falls; eight children: Charles Blakeman and his wife, Brenda, of Hudson Falls, Donald Blakeman and his wife, Sharon, of Texas, Catherine Traver of Hudson Falls, Laurie Wadleigh and her husband, Donald, of Hudson Falls, Carol Blakeman of Tennessee, Christine Blakeman of Bedford Hills, N.Y., Leonard Blakeman of Rochester and Brett Blakeman of Hudson Falls; two brothers, Howard Twiss and his wife, Olive, of Queensbury, and Richard Twiss and his wife, Carol, of Fort Ann; 16 grandchildren; several great grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Bourgault, Nina (Harrington) HUDSON FALLS -- Nina (Harrington) Bourgault, 72, beloved wife, mother and grandmother, went into the arms of the Lord, surrounded by her loving family and friends, at the Glens Falls Hospital on Saturday, Jan. 29, 2005. Born on March 30, 1932, in Glens Falls, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Marion (Griffin) Harrington. Nina graduated from Hudson Falls High School. After graduation, she was employed by the Glens Falls Telephone Company and later at the Glens Falls Insurance Company. On March 24, 1951, she married David J. Bourgault at the Hudson Falls First Baptist Church. While raising her children with her husband, Nina worked at the Hudson Falls Free Library. Nina was a very active member of the Hudson Falls First Baptist Church, where she served in all offices. Her strong commitment and dedication to her church and the Lord has been reflected in the many lives she has touched. Her two grandchildren, Luc and Daniel, were the light of her life. Nina enjoyed tending to her beautiful flower gardens, quilting, crafting and making spaghetti sauce with her grandsons and family. She was an excellent seamstress and cook. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her brothers, Daniel Harrington and Charles Fitch Harrington and her sister, Ruth Fletcher. Survivors include her loving husband of 54 years, David J. Bourgault of Hudson Falls; three daughters, Linda Bourgault of Walpole, N.H., and her companion, Dr. James White III, Sandy Cleveland of Ballston Spa and Donna Bourgault and her husband, Al Nielsen, of Queensbury; two grandsons, Luc Bourgault and Daniel Nielsen, both of Queensbury; one sister, Laura Howard of Glens Falls; and several nieces and nephews. QUEENSBURY -- Leo E. Bruce Sr., 66, passed away Saturday, Jan. 29, 2005, at Glens Falls Hospital after a long illness, surrounded by his loving family. Born on June 19, 1938, in Fort Miller, he was the son of the late Edward R. Bruce and Dorothy (Waite) Bruce. Leo was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving some of his time stationed in Japan. He retired in 1997 from Finch, Pruyn and Co., Inc. Leo married JoAnn Lalonde on Jan. 15, 1977. Besides his parents, his brothers, Edward J. Bruce and John W. Bruce, and his sister, Mary H. Beecher, predeceased Leo. Survivors besides his wife include his daughter, Shari Seybolt and her husband, Fred, of South Glens Falls; his sons: Leo Bruce Jr. and his partner, Tim Briggs, of Queensbury, Brian Bruce of Glens Falls, Fred Blanchard and his wife, Theresa, of Fort Ann, and Tracy Blanchard and his wife, Tracy, of Edinburg. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Adam, Craig, Jarrod and Brent Seybolt of South Glens Falls, Fred Blanchard III and Tesha Blanchard of Fort Ann, Anne (Blanchard) Rhodes and her husband, Josh, of Jacksonville, Fla., Erin Blanchard, Todd and John Briggs of Edinburg; a great-grandson, Wesley Rhodes of Jacksonville, Fla; his sisters, Joyce Lapierre of Schuylerville, and Barbara Flewelling and her husband, Larry, of Queensbury; and his special friends, Chuck "O" and Cathy Graham of Fort Ann; and the alumni from Finch, Pruyn. His devoted dog, Sparkie, also survives Leo. Fane, 62, of Queensbury, passed away Friday, Jan. 28, 2005, at Glens Falls Hospital after a long courageous battle with cancer. He was born March 2, 1942, in Schenectady, the son of the late Francis and Helen (O'Neil) Fane. Ed graduated from Norwich University in Montpelier, Vt., in 1965 and Albany Law School in 1968. He had been a practicing attorney for over 30 years and was a founding partner of Fane & Barber law firm. Edward married Susan Peters on Aug. 26, 1967, at St. John The Evangelist Church in Schenectady. His hobbies and interests included model trains, boats, gardening, traveling, Christmas and gift giving. He loved his dogs, Ginger and Barney, his horse, Max, and was a defender of animal rights. He was very proud of his Irish heritage, a great friend to all who knew him, always ready to help without want of recognition. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a sister, Nancy M. Fane. Survivors include his wife of 37 years, Susan P. Fane of Queensbury; three daughters: Michelle A. Fane-Cushing and her husband, Steve, of Burlington, Vt., Colleen M. Diaz and her husband, Dave, of Somerset, N.J., and Kathleen E. Fane of Somerset, N.J. and her partner, Andrew G. Burgess, of Scotland; and a grandson, Colby "Beaker" S. Fane-Cushing of Burlington, Vt.; his close friends, John and Lil Mac Donald, Ed and Janet Arros, Tom and June Burke, Kay Crosse, Doc Hogan; and many other friends and neighbors to numerous to mention. We would like to extend a special Thank You to his support team, "Ed's Locomotives." Thanks for being "all aboard." Manfred "Murf" Johnston, 91, a resident of the Oaks in Fort Edward, died Sunday, Jan. 30, 2005, at Glens Falls Hospital. Born in Fort Edward on Dec. 27, 1913, he was the son of Carl and Eleanor (Munson) Johnston. Murf retired from General Electric Co. of Fort Edward. He later worked at Union Cemetery, Fort Edward and was communicant of St. James Episcopal Church, Fort Edward. He was an avid golfer and belonged to the Tee-Bird Country Club and the Wedgewood Golf Club. Murf was a mason for over 50 years. He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his younger nieces and nephews. In his later years he enjoyed riding around town in his golf cart, which he referred to as his "Ferrari." His "Ferrari" made many stops to OTB and Mandys. Besides his parents, Murf was also predeceased by his wife, Marion Johnston, who died in 2002. His brothers, Laurence Johnston and George "Barney" Johnston, and sisters, Sue Myers and Eleanor Hammond, and nephews, Robert Myers and Lourence Johnston, also all predeceased him. Survivors include his two nieces, Ann Myers of Glens Falls and Barbara Gregory of Newcomb; his three nephews: Walt "Butch" Hammond and his wife, Dorothy, of Fort Edward, Thomas Hammond and his wife, Lois, of Queensbury, and Terry Johnston and his wife, Monica, of Fort Edward; 12 grand nieces: Erika Nall, Carol Saville, Gail Johnson, Lois Methlie, Allison Hammond, Sharon Carroll, Deborah Hammond, Jackie Rosati, Maryellen Godfrey, Loura Hurdich, Jacqueline Gorthey and Penny Hatch; nine great-nephews: Kris Johnston, Alex Johnston, Sherm Hammond, Thomas Hammond, Michael Hammond, Scott Johnston, Terry Johnston, Lewis Hatch and Kevin Hatch; 39 great-grandnieces and nephews; three great-great-grandnieces and nephews; and several cousins. Kruger, Agnes Dorothy GREENWICH -- Agnes Dorothy Kruger, 85, a resident of Greenwich, and formerly of Cambridge, died Saturday, Jan. 29, 2005, at Pleasant Valley Health Care Facility in Argyle. Born June 5, 1919, in Paterson, N.J., she was the daughter of Thomas and Adeline (Coons) Fleming. Mrs. Kruger was educated in New Jersey and earned her nursing degree from the New Jersey Nursing Academy in Bergen County. After working for the war effort at the Curtis Wright Engine Assembly Plant during the 1940s, Mrs. Kruger began her nursing career at Bergin Pines County Hospital in New Jersey, and continued her career as an emergency room technician at Mary McClellan Hospital in Cambridge, upon moving there in 1966. She retired from the hospital after 20 years of service. She was a communicant of St. Patrick's Church in Cambridge. Mrs. Kruger enjoyed crocheting, craft work, and vacationing summers in the Northeast kingdom of Vermont. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband of 54 years, Walter W. Kruger Sr., who died in 1999, and a son, Raymond Walter Kruger, who died in 1983. She is survived by a son, Walter Kruger Jr. and his wife, Dawn, of Vermont; two grandchildren, Inger McDonald and her husband, D.J., of Greenwich, and Kristi Deitz and her husband, David, of Idaho; two stepgrandchildren, Brandianne Stipano and Christopher Stipano Jr. of Glens Falls; five great-grandchildren: Adam, Marissa, and Abbie Gillis of Greenwich, and Ryan and Taylor Deitz of Idaho. Shults, Manley ARGYLE -- Manley Shults, 95, formerly of Nellis Road, Fort Plain, and a resident of Argyle since 2000, died Friday, Jan. 28, 2005, at Pleasant Valley Health Care Facility in Argyle. Born Feb. 3, 1910, in Stone Arabia, N.Y., he was the son of Martin Shults and Marie Fonda Shults. He was a graduate of Fort Plain High School, Class of 1926, and also attended Cornell University. Mr. Shults was a self-employed dairy farmer on his family's farm on Nellis Road in Fort Plain, retiring in 1981. He formed and operated several businesses with his father. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Stone Arabia, and was a founding member of the Seal & Serpent Fraternity of Cornell University in Ithaca. Mr. Shults enjoyed reading, was an accomplished pianist and had a tenor voice. He married Virginia Merkley on Sept. 7, 1939, in Cobleskill. She died Feb. 4, 1991. He was also predeceased by two brothers, Charles Shults in 2001 and Leonard Shults in 2004. Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Virginia L. and Alex Torda of Argyle; two sisters, Gertrude Waner of Salem and Margaret Bollen of Fort Plain; two granddaughters, Elaine Lynn Torda and her husband, Robert Thorburn, of Huguenot, N.Y., and Melinda Lee Tougas and her husband, Heath Tougas, of Greenfield Center; one great-granddaughter, Mikayla Lee Tougas of Greenfield Center; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 2, at Trinity Lutheran Church, St. Highway 10, Palatine Bridge, with the Rev. Gail Wolling and pastor James Jaekel officiating.
