She would have been 101 years old on Sept. 12. Hattie, the daughter of Frances and Jacob Newmark, emigrated from Russia in 1904. Throughout her life, she was a constant inspiration to her family as well as to all who knew her. She was predeceased by her first husband, Louis Solomon; her second husband, Walter Cohen; two brothers, Max Newmark and Moses Newmark; and three sisters, Fannie and Esther Newmark and Minnie Zalkin; and her dearly beloved daughter, Gloria Bittman. She is survived by her daughter Sylvia Kudan (Norman); her son-in-law, Melvin Bittman; two granddaughters, Ronnie Shelley and Laurie Nelson (Jonathan); and two grandsons, Joe Bittman and Peter Kudan (Nancy). She is also survived by six great-grandchildren: Andrea Tomberg (Jeffrey), Meredith Peacock (Aaron), Brian Shelley, Ali Shelley, Jerry Kudan, and Alan Judan; and several nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her beloved friend Gladys Verdejo. Services will be held at Temple Beth-El, 3 Marion Ave., Glens Falls, at 11:30 a.m. Friday. Interment will be at Temple Cemetery in South Glens Falls. Shiva will be observed Saturday, Sunday and Monday, June, 4, 5 and 6, at 7:30 p.m. at the home of Sylvia and Norman Kudan, 81 Fort Amherst Road, Glens Falls. Collins, 74, of Delaware Avenue, passed away on Sunday, May 29, 2005, at his home, following a long illness. Born on July 12, 1930, in the town of Kingsbury, he was the son of the late Allen and Myrtle (Kane) Collins. He married Dawn Dashnaw on April 24, 1965, in St. Paul's Church in Hudson Falls. Dawn passed away on Oct. 28, 2002, after 37 years of marriage. As a very young man, Vernon worked as a farmer in this area. He later worked at Bronk Coal and Lumber Co. in the town of Fort Edward. In 1992, he retired from Pallets, Inc. of Fort Edward, where he worked 27 years. For a time, he was a Glens Falls resident and got great pleasure from his dog, Tiny, and his favorite television shows. In addition to his parents and his wife, two brothers, Donald Collins and Earl Collins, both passed away before him. Survivors include two brothers, Homer Collins and his wife, Lela, of Argyle, and Winfred Collins and his wife, Leona, of Hudson Falls; three sisters: Shirley Tucker of Argyle, Jean McGregor Kelleher and her husband, David, of Glens Falls, and Telesa Collins of Florida; a sister-in-law, Jane Collins; several nieces, nephews and cousins; his caregivers, Rick Stone of Canajoharie, Brenda Martin and Mary Bennett, both of Hudson Falls; and his special friend, Ellie Bennett of Hudson Falls. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today, June 1, at Carleton Funeral Home, 68 Main St. in Hudson Falls. Funeral services will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Thursday at the funeral home. Hogan, M.D., 74, of Notre Dame Street Extension, died unexpectedly on Memorial Day, Monday, May 30, 2005, at Glens Falls Hospital. Born on Jan. 5, 1931, on the Hogan family farm in Hudson Falls, he was the son of the late John J. and Catherine (Cruickshank) Hogan. He was a 1948 graduate of Hudson Falls High School and a 1953 graduate of Niagara University. In 1957, he obtained his medical degree from the Marquette University School of Medicine. He then interned at Mercy Hospital in Buffalo from 1957 to 1958. He was a resident in Internal Medicine at the Veteran's Administration Hospital in Albany, from 1958 to 1961. Doc served with the United States Navy at Great Lakes Naval Base in Illinois from 1961 to 1963. He then completed a fellowship in Cardiology at The Albany Medical School from 1963 to 1964. He opened his practice in 1964. Doc was well-known for serving many generations of families in the Hudson Falls area and continued his practice until the day he died. On June 5, 1957, just three days after he graduated from medical school, he married Elizabeth Werner in Vesta, Minn. Doc Hogan considered himself a farm boy first and medicine was a beloved hobby. If anyone ever wondered what Doc Hogan's philosophy was, it is summed up in this statement he made to family and friends many times: "We say that man is the highest of all beings. Caring for him has given me a lifetime of the greatest pleasure." Throughout his life he enjoyed woodworking, sports including hunting and horses and had a great love of books and gadgets. He loved his wife, Betty, and took great joy in his children and grandchildren. In addition to serving the medical needs of the community, Doc was active in his church, St. Mary's/St. Paul's in Hudson Falls, where he was a longtime trustee. He was a member of the Hudson Falls/Kingsbury Chamber of Commerce where he received the "Flowers To The Living Award," a member of the American Heart Association and was placed on the "Wall of Distinction" at Hudson Falls High School. In addition to his parents, other family members who died before him include his brothers, Dalton Hogan, Jack Hogan, Dr. Maxwell "Patrick" Hogan, and Francis "Frank" Hogan; two sisters, Judy Hogan and Christian Agnes McCaffrey; three sisters-in-law, Colleen Hogan, Marie Hogan and Cathy Hogan; and three brothers-in-law, Henry Werner, Dr. Charles Ryan and Joseph McCaffrey. Survivors in addition to his loving wife of 47 years, Elizabeth "Betty" Hogan of Hudson Falls, include his children: Patrick Hogan and his wife, Karen, and their children, Rhianna and Mike of Hudson Falls; Rich Hogan and his wife, Mary, and their children, Jessica and Danielle of Hudson Falls; Cathy Barton and her husband, Dr. Kelly Barton, and their children, Rachael, Samantha, John, Heather, Meghan, Katy and Max of Athens, Pa.; John Hogan and his wife, Lisa, and their children, Noah, Myles and Tessa, of Gansevoort; Dr. Robert Hogan and his wife, Elizabeth, and their children, Jackie, Nolan and Neil, of Glens Falls; Dr. Amy Hogan and her husband, David Moulton, and their children, Christine and Stephen of Hudson Falls; Dan Hogan and his wife, Robyn Cronin, and their children, Mackenzie, Moira and Aidan, of Hudson Falls; Dr. Jennifer Hogan and her husband, Scott Murphy, and their children, Simone, Lux and Duke,of New York City; Bill Hogan and his wife, Cheryl, and their children, Ben, Tom, Dan and Eliza, of Hudson Falls; Joseph Hogan and his wife, Angie, and their children, Dalton and Jack, of Hudson Falls; and Dr. Ann Hogan of New York City; two sisters, Cay Delaney of Tarrytown and Jean Ryan of Sarasota, Fla.; four brothers, James Hogan and his wife, Joan, of Auburn, Roger Hogan and his wife, Margaret, and Leonard Hogan and his wife, Darlene, all of Hudson Falls and Robert Hogan of Queensbury; four sisters-in-law, Jeanne Hogan of Auburn, Catherine Crank and her husband, Joe, of Salem and Virginia Kluth and her husband, Herb, of Prior Lake, Minn., and Ruth Hogan of Hudson Falls; one brother-in-law, Richard Werner and his wife, Barbara, of Marshall, Minn.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Friends may call from 1 p.m. until 8 p.m. Friday at the Hogan family home at 56 County Route 41 (Notre Dame St. Ext.) in Hudson Falls. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Saturday at St. Mary's/St. Paul's Church, on the park, in Hudson Falls. The Rite of Committal will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery in the town of Fort Edward. Following the Rite of Committal, all are welcome to gather with Doc's family at his home on Notre Dame Street Extension. Christensen Ingraham, 102, a longtime resident of Fort Edward and Glens Falls, passed away Monday, May 30, 2005, at Adirondack Tri-County Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in North Creek. Born May 29, 1903, in Rupert, Vt., she was the daughter of Barney and Anna (McKeighan) Mullen. Mary was a former member of New England Congregational Baptist Church, Eastern Star of Gansevoort and the White Star Shrine of Glens Falls. Her husbands, Andrew Christensen and Elmer Ingraham, brothers, Thomas and Otis Mullen, and a sister, Gladys Mullen, have all predeceased her. Survivors include her son, Andrew Christensen and his wife, Pearl, of South Glens Falls; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Jennie Farrar of Rupert, Vt. and Anna Roberts of Granville; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Memorial services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Friday at Adirondack Tri-County Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Ski Bowl Road, North Creek. Friends may gather a half hour prior to the service at the nursing home. Burial will be at Southside Cemetery, South Glens Falls. Nevens, Marguerite "Maggie" GLENS FALLS -- Marguerite "Maggie" Nevens, of Glens Falls, passed away Monday, May 30, 2005, at Glens Falls Hospital following a short illness. Born July 1, 1917, in Bolton Landing, she was the daughter of the late George and Daisey (Scripture) Middleton. Maggie loved sewing, cooking, fishing and doing for others and was the social butterfly at Cronin High Rise, living independently until very recently. She raised more than 50 foster children, never turning anyone away. Maggie owned and operated The Little Restaurant on Miller Hill and worked at the Ideal Nursing Home on Ridge Street in Glens Falls for many years. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Fenwick Nevens, who died on May 3, 1977; a stepdaughter, Patricia Chandler; a brother, Albert Middleton; and a sister, Elizabeth (Libby) Palmer. Survivors include two sons, Milton "Butch" Nevens and his wife, Lillie, of Fort Edward, and William Nevens and his wife, Harriette, of Queensbury; 28 grandchildren; three great- grandchildren; three stepdaughters, Shirley Zaugg of Florida, Ruth Bruno and her husband, Peter J., of Glens Falls, and Jane Dooley and her husband, Raymond, of Booneville; a sister, Dorotha Charlebois and her husband, Gerald, of Glen Lake; and numerous nieces, nephews and many good friends. A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m., on Friday, June 3, at Sullivan-Minahan & Potter Funeral Home, 407 Bay Road, Queensbury. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family. HUDSON FALLS -- Edward A. Reynolds, 88, of Catherine Street, died on Tuesday, May 31, 2005, at Glens Falls Hospital, after a short illness. Born in Richmondville, N.Y., he was the son of the late Ellery and Nellie (Wade) Reynolds. He graduated from Worcester High School, and received a BA from New York State College for Teachers (now SUNY at Albany) and an MS from Cornell University. Ed also did graduate work at Union College and SUNY at Plattsburgh. During World War II, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps, studying at New York University, College of Engineering. Upon graduation, he was commissioned a second lieutenant. Ed served as officer in charge and chief forecaster at several weather stations, including ones in McGuire, N.J. and Lakeland, Fla. Later in the war, Ed was assigned to Iceland, where he was assistant officer in charge of the weather station. After Ed was discharged as a captain, he joined the reserves, where he served for many years, until his retirement as a lieutenant colonel. While serving in Lakeland in 1944, he met and married his wife Beatrice Ford. Ed's first teaching position was in Oriskany, N.Y., from 1938 to 1942. After his service in the Air Force, he came to Hudson Falls in 1946, teaching math and science, until 1956, when Ed was named assistant principal at Hudson Falls Senior High School. He held that position until June 1963, when he became the high school principal, and remained in that position until his retirement in 1976. In addition to his teaching and supervisory duties, Ed was a past president of the Hudson Falls Teachers Association, a past president of the Hudson Falls Kiwanis Club, a member of the New York State Secondary Principal's Association and a member of the New York State Science Teacher's Association. Ed was a very active member of the Hudson Falls United Methodist Church, where he served as a Sunday school teacher, a member of the choir, the Sunday school superintendent, a lay leader and the president of the Board of Trustees. For years, Ed enjoyed gardening, woodworking and attending his grandchildren's activities. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his granddaughter, Lauren Hawkes. Ed is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Beatrice (Ford) Reynolds; their four children: Barbara Keyworth and her husband, John, of Hatfield, Mass., Cynthia Lee and her husband, Richard, of Glens Falls, Janet Mahoney and her husband, Raymond, of Glens Falls, and Nancy Hawkes and her husband, Nathan, of Gorham, Maine; eight grandchildren: Joshua Keyworth, Andrea and Jared Lee, Shane, Kaitlyn and Maureen Mahoney and Kelsi and Adam Hawkes. Friends are welcome to call on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Carleton Funeral Home, Inc., 68 Main St. in Hudson Falls. Winchell Sr., 63, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, May 30, 2005, at Glens Falls Hospital. Born on June 1, 1942, in Kingsbury, he was the son of Earl and Hattie (Dayton) Winchell. Edwin served with the U.S. Army from 1960 until 1963. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, NASCAR racing, truck pulls and was an avid sports fan. Edwin most of all enjoyed spending time with his family. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Sharon Winchell, on Oct. 20, 2000. Survivors include his daughters: Karen Stone of Queensbury, Jennifer Davis and her fiance, Leon Potter, of Queensbury, Becky Joiner and her fiance, Howard Brilya Jr., of Lake George, and Maxine Frasier and her husband, Allen, of Johnsburg; his son, Edwin E. Winchell Jr. and his wife, Tina, of Queensbury; his companion, Charline Clothier of Queensbury; his grandchildren: Leslie Stone, Elicia Stone, Jessica Davis, Timothy Davis, Rose Potter, Steven Joiner, Scott Joiner, Richard Joiner, Trina Frasier, Joseph Frasier, Ashley Winchell and Natasha Winchell; and his sisters, Edna Beljauskis of Vermont and Linda Blackwood of Vermont. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery in the town of Saratoga. There will be no calling hours.
