CORINTH -- Maude M. Howenstein, 99, of Oak Street, died Sunday, June 12, 2005, at Saratoga Hospital following a brief illness. Born on June 18, 1905, in Corinth, she was the daughter of the late Hartwell and Eunice (Steadman) MacDonald. Maude graduated from Corinth High School as valedictorian in 1923. She continued her education at the State University at Oneonta and had a lifetime career as a schoolteacher, mother and grandmother, retiring from Corinth Central Schools in 1969. She married Harold C. "Howie" Howenstein and the couple resided on Oak Street in Corinth for many years. He died before her. Maude was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Corinth and a longtime member of the Bible study group. Always a devout Christian, she was an inspiration to all who knew her. Besides her husband and her parents, one son, Buddy, died before her. Survivors include one son, Bill and his wife, Judy, of Corinth; one daughter, Judy Maciariello and her husband, Joseph, of Claremont, Calif.; her longtime friend and caretaker, Betty Vaughn, of Corinth; six grandsons: Joey Maciariello and Patrick Maciariello, B.J. Howenstein and Jim Howenstein and his wife, Laura, Steve Cousineau and his wife, Sue, and Richard Cousineau and his wife, Janet; three granddaughters: Teri Morrow and her husband, Rick, Greta Siddiqui and her husband, Zarig, and Renee Brown and her husband, Peter; and great-grandchildren: Alexander and Olivia Morrow, Ellen, Jake, and Meg Siddiqui, and Kaitlyn and Cameron Cousineau, and Reese and Sydney Cousineau, and Alexa Brown. A memorial service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 18, at the First Presbyterian Church of Corinth, 203 Palmer Ave., Corinth, with the Rev. John Aldridge, pastor, officiating. Locke, Amaryllis "Anne" SOUTH GLENS FALLS -- Amaryllis "Anne" Locke, 75, of state Route 9, South Glens Falls, died Friday, June 10, 2005, at Glens Falls Hospital. Amaryllis was born Dec. 10, 1929, to Edwin and Bessie (Hagadorn) Neilson, in the dining room of her parents' home on Windy Hill Road, in the town of Easton. She was the youngest of seven children. She was a 1947 graduate of Greenwich Central School. During high school, Anne worked at Davies Florist in Greenwich. Following graduation she was employed at United Board and Carton. She also served as Town Clerk for the town of Northumberland. In 1960, she joined the National Bank of Schuylerville as part-time summer help and was eventually promoted to the position of head teller. When the Glens Falls National Bank and Trust Company purchased the Schuylerville Bank, Anne was promoted to Bank Manager. She worked as Branch Manager in both the Schuylerville and Fort Ann offices. During this time, she met Edward B. Locke and they were married on Sept. 20, 1975. She retired from the bank in 1985. She was also very active in the Mettawee Valley Business and Professional Women's Club, serving as president for two terms, treasurer for the New York State Convention in 1982, and as Financial Chair for BPW District IV. Amaryllis did not let retirement slow her down. Following her retirement, she served as Secretary to the Fort Ann Planning Board; Clerk for the Village of Fort Ann; Treasurer of the United Protestant Women of Fort Ann; Secretary of the Administrative Council of the United Protestant Church of Fort Ann and Chairman of the Pastor-Parish Relations Committee. Anne was a member of the Queen Anne Seniors Club, where she acted as tour director for several years. She was also a member of the Old Saratoga Seniors. She enjoyed reading, doing crossword puzzles; taking her ever-faithful companion, Krissy, for car rides; her Friday night dinners at the Docksider on Glen Lake, where she was honored with her own special table; and traveling to Las Vegas to the Lady Luck Hotel and Casino to play the slots. Anne thoroughly enjoyed life, loved her family and friends and was a truly remarkable role model to many. She was predeceased by her parents; her infant brother Charles; sister, Millie Myers; and by her husband, Edward B. Locke, who died Dec. 13, 1985. Survivors include her son, George Peters, and his wife, Terry, of Schuylerville; daughter, Susan Peters of South Glens Falls, with whom she resided; stepson, David Locke and his wife, Anita, of Chestertown; and stepdaughter, Donna Haight and her husband, Rob, of Marietta, Ga. She is also survived by her brothers, Marshall Neilson of Clifton Park, Donald Neilson of Greenwich; and sisters, Lottie Fasoli of Greenwich and Bertha Goman of Henrietta, Okla. She also leaves grandchildren, Kim Brunelle and her husband, Timothy, of Schuylerville, Shawn Quinn and his wife, Amy, of Schuylerville, Shauna Locke-Holcomb and her husband, Bill, of Fort Ann, and Sam Locke and his wife, Sarah, of Poultney, Vt. She has eight great-grandchildren: Karen, Fred and Carissa Brunelle, Madison, Sydney, Riley and Chase Quinn and Kaylin Holcomb. She is survived by her aunts, Mamie Bozony of Saratoga Springs and Alice Skeals of Cockeysville, Md. Grandma will be deeply missed by her "granddog," Miss Kriss Kringle, her constant companion for the last 4-1/2 years of her life. She also leaves numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and a large circle of dear friends and adopted family members. The family wishes to thank the staff of 2 South for getting her back home to us after her stay at Glens Falls Hospital in March of this year, especially Janine and Karen, who treated her with such kindness and love. Thanks also to the nursing and professional staff of the CCU for all your efforts and tender care, and the staff of 3 South for making her final days comfortable. Words cannot express the family's gratitude to her niece, Alice DuBois, for being ever willing to take her to doctor's appointments, make hospital visits and home visits and be the family liaison. A celebration of Amaryllis' life will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 15, 2005, at the United Protestant Church, 5 Anne St., Fort Ann, with the Rev. Dewey Armitage officiating. McCabe, Doris Rita (Young) South Glens Falls -- Doris Rita (Young) McCabe, 77, of Wilson Avenue, died Saturday, June 11, 2005, at Glens Falls Hospital after a long illness. Born on Sept. 24, 1927, in Hoosick Falls, she was the daughter of the late Walter Benjamin and Rita (Murphy) Young. Doris graduated from Hoosick Falls High School, Class of 1944. She then went on to receive her Associate Degree from Green Mountain College, graduating in 1947. She worked for the South Glens Falls School District as a tax collector, secretary for H&R Block and retired in 1991 as a Court Clerk with the town of Moreau. Doris was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Glens Falls. She enjoyed traveling with the town of Moreau seniors and was a member of the town of Moreau Board of Elections. She was a member of the town of Moreau Recreation Commission, the Glens Falls Hospital Guild and was past president of the Harrison Avenue PTA. Doris, along with her husband, enjoyed league bowling for many years. She was an avid Red Wings season ticket holder and particularly enjoyed attending her children's and grandchildren's numerous activities. Doris married Eugene K. McCabe on May 6, 1950, in Hoosick Falls. He passed away Sept. 17, 1982. Besides her parents and husband, a brother-in-law, Loren E. McCabe, also predeceased her. Survivors include her children: a son, Raymond W. McCabe and his life partner, Robert Frame, of Sacramento, Calif.; a daughter, Doris J. Lemery and her husband, Charles E. Jr., of Queensbury and their children, Brian J. Lemery and his wife, Sandra, of Queensbury, and Janice K. Lemery; a daughter, Lucinda M. Trombley and her husband, Paul K., of South Glens Falls and their children, Elizabeth B. Trombley and her fianc‚, Travis Wildes, of Blackstone, Mass., and Benjamin E.C. Trombley and his girlfriend, Melissa Foos, of Queen Creek, Ariz.; a son, Richard E. McCabe and his wife, Nancy L., of South Glens Falls and their children, Scott E. McCabe and Kari L. McCabe; a son, Robert W. McCabe of Saratoga Springs and his children, Robert J. McCabe, stationed with the U.S. Air Force in Monterey, Calif. and Sara E. Phillips, Margaret Irene (Coffinger) Saratoga Springs -- Margaret Irene (Coffinger) Phillips, formerly of Saratoga Springs, passed away Saturday, June 11, 2005, at The Landing in Queensbury. Born in Schuylerville, she was the daughter of the late Ernest Abram and Julia Agnes (Sinnott) Coffinger and was a lifelong area resident. A graduate of the Flower and Fifth Avenue Hospitals School of Nursing in New York City on Nov. 28, 1940, she served as a registered nurse during her professional career. She had worked at the Saratoga Hospital maternity unit from 1941 to 1945 and at the New York State Veterans Camp at Mount McGregor in Wilton from 1947 to 1960. She retired from the Middletown State Hospital in 1974, where she worked since 1961. She was a founding member and first vice-president of the Pine Bush Ambulance Squad in Pine Bush, N.Y. A charter den mother of Cub Scout Pack 24 in Wilton, she was a member of Boy Scout Troop 24 Women's Auxiliary. An avid golfer, she was a member of the Leisureville Golf League in Boynton Beach, Fla. Her interests included flower gardening, knitting and oil painting the area surrounding her second home on Great Sagandaga Lake, where the family summered since the early 1950s. She was married on July 22, 1945, to the late Eugene E. Phillips, who passed away on Sept. 15, 1995. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by one sister, Violet Green; and two brothers, Paul and Ernest Coffinger. Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law; Eugene Edward Phillips and his wife, Cynthia, of Wilton, and William Ernest Phillips and his wife, Joyce, of the town of Moreau; two sisters, Julia Ernst of Schuylerville and Ann Miner of Florida; two sisters-in-law, Marian Coffinger of Salem and Mary Murray of Saratoga Springs; four grandchildren, William Phillips of Norfolk, Va., Jeffrey Phillips of Glens Falls, Keith Phillips of Malta and Katie Phillips of Clifton Park; four great-grandchildren, Jack and Matthew of Norfolk and Ethan and Benjamin of Malta; as well as several nieces and nephews. Scott, 56, of School Street, passed away unexpectedly after a short illness at the Fletcher Allen Medical Center in Burlington on Saturday, June 11, 2005. Born on Aug. 7, 1948, in Granville, she was the daughter of Dorothy Scott and the late Joseph B. Scott. Patricia graduated from Whitehall High School in 1966. She attended the College of Saint Rose and received a Bachelor of Arts from North Country Community College. She was recently promoted to the position of senior probation officer for the Washington County Probation Department, where she was a caring and dedicated employee for more than two decades. Her previous employment included working in the family business, Jumbo's IGA in Whitehall and Scott's General Store in Hulett's Landing, where she worked as a cashier and bookkeeper. She was an avid reader, frequented yard sales with her mother in pursuit of antiques and collectibles, and enjoyed the outdoors, especially her flower gardens. Patricia is survived by her loving family, mother, Dorothy Scott of Whitehall; two sons, Scott Bascue and Christopher Bascue and his wife, Brenda, all of Whitehall; and daughter, Kate Wiskoski and her husband, John, of Lake Bomoseen, Vt.; five grandchildren, Cody Scott, Nicholas Butler, Hannah Bascue, Haley Wiskoski and Courtney Wiskoski; two sisters, Helen (Scott) Hoey of Bremerton, Wash., and Anne Scott of New York City; a brother, Robert Scott of Whitehall; as well as several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and countless friends. Born in Albany, he was a U.S. Army Korean War veteran. Jay was the head snowmaker for Gore Mountain, gourmet cook and master craftsman furniture maker. He worked as service manager for Cummins Diesel, Empire White and Glen Ford Companies. He was the husband of Joan Reilly Van Epps; father of Jaye Lansburg (Mark) of Voorheesville, Bruce Van Epps (Shelly) of Colonie, Geoffrey Van Epps (Michele) of Guilderland and Christopher Van Epps (Barbara) of Guilderland; grandfather of Charles, Gabrielle, Bruce, Evan, Amber, Megan, Blake, Dylan and William; son of the late Mildred Montgomery Van Epps; brother of Dorothy Greene of Albany and the late Joan McGahay; several nieces and nephews also survive. Wilcox, 86, of Argyle, died Sunday, June 12, 2005, at Pleasant Valley Nursing Home, Argyle. Born on Dec. 16, 1918, in South Glens Falls, she was the daughter of the late George and Jennifer Vaughn. Beverely was a longtime resident of Pleasant Valley. She enjoyed socializing and made many friends through the years at the nursing home and was affectionately known as the Pleasant Valley "Party Animal." She loved people and enjoyed arts, crafts and camping. Besides her parents, Beverly was also predeceased by her husband, Joseph Wilcox, in 1969, and several brothers and sisters. Survivors include her children: George Bennett of Texas, Patricia Terry and her longtime companion, Frank Jones of Queensbury, Robin Wilcox and his wife, Linda, of Chestertown, Christine Huff and her husband, Tim, of Gansevoort; 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Winans, 79, a longtime resident of Chelsea Square, passed away Saturday, June 11, 2005, at her home, surrounded by her family, following a second battle with cancer. Born on April 7, 1926, in Hartford, she was the daughter of the late Ernest and Ethel (McClellan) Montgomery. Mrs. Winans was the Salutatorian of the Class of 1943 at Hartford Central School. On Jan. 5, 1949, she married Ludwig J. Winans. She will be best remembered as working at the Margaret Murphy School in Hudson Falls, where she was the secretary to her dear friend, the late William Goodrich. Mrs. Winans enjoyed reading and genealogy. She and her husband enjoyed wintering in Sebring, Fla., and she especially enjoyed time spent with her family. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by three sisters, Lillian Moorman Trombley, Mildred I. Montgomery and Virginia A. Mercure. She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Ludwig "Joe" Winans of Hudson Falls; one son, Daniel E. Winans of Yuma, Ariz. and his children, Ashley A. Winans of Maryland, and Collette J. Engle and her husband, Mike, of Michigan; one daughter, Claire Winans Keech and her husband, Curtis, of Hudson Falls and children, Sarah J. Doty and Emily A. Doty, both of Hudson Falls; two great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins. At Ida's request, there are no calling hours. Services and burial are private.
