Mr. Barton had a distinguished career in business and environmental philanthropy. He graduated from the Haverford School in 1935 and from the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School in 1939. Mr. Barton was a captain in the U. S. Army during World War II. Following the war, Mr. Barton and his wife moved from Philadelphia to North Creek, N.Y. There he served the Barton Mines Corporation as president, chairman and director until 1984. During his tenure with the Barton Mines, the company's garnet abrasives business became the largest in the world and the company itself became the oldest mining company in the United States under continuous family ownership. He moved back to Philadelphia in 1965. His conservation and environmental interests were many but centered on the protection of salt marshes along Buzzards Bay in Massachusetts, of lakes in New York's Adirondack mountains, and of streams throughout the Delaware Valley. Among the many accomplishments and associations that gave him the most pleasure, Mr. Barton was founding trustee of Adirondack Community College and an active member of The Military Order of Foreign Wars, The Wilderness Club, and Friends of the Wissahickon. He was a private pilot and an avid participant in tennis, skiing, and canoeing. He is survived by his wife, Jane Meigs Barton of Philadelphia, Pa.; a daughter, Sallie Barton Kashiwa of Denver, Colo., a son, Henry Hudson Barton V of Waxhaw, N.C., and seven grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 5 p.m. on Saturday, March 5, 2005, at the Church of St. Martin in the Fields, 8000 St. Martin's Lane, Philadelphia, PA 19118. Published in the Post-Star on 3/1/2005. Cary, Winifred M. QUEENSBURY -- Winifred M. Cary died Sunday, Feb. 27, 2005, at Glens Falls Hospital, after a brief illness. She has resided at The Landing in Queensbury since January of 2001. Winifred was the wife of Lucius G. Cary who died in October of 1997. Born Feb. 2, 1913, in New York City, she was the daughter of the late John and Katherine (Scanlan) Mulligan. She was a graduate of Richfield Springs High School, Cornell University and special studies of NYU School of Medicine. Winifred was employed by Otsego County and Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown, N.Y., as a bacteriologist, retiring in 1966. After retirement, she assisted her husband Lucius in the operation of Hebron Camp and Conference Center in Hebron, N.Y. They moved to Glens Falls in 1977. Winifred and her husband were active volunteers for many community projects and organizations in the Glens Falls area. She was a communicant and active member of the Annunciation Parish in Queensbury. Survivors include nieces, nephews and many close friends. She was predeceased by brothers, Charles and John Mulligan and foster brothers, Charles and Carl Garski. At Winifred's request, her body has been donated, as an anatomical gift, to Albany Medical Center. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 5, 2005, at Our Lady of the Annunciation Church, Queensbury, by the Most Rev. Matthew H. Clark, with her nephew, the Rev. John Mulligan, and the Rev. Joseph Anselment officiating. Jacobie, William MOREAU -- William Jacobie, a resident of the town of Moreau, passed away Sunday, Feb. 27, 2005, at his residence. He was born on Aug. 23, 1922, the son of Raymond and Grace (Mace) Jacobie. Mr. Jacobie was a graduate of South Glens Falls high school and lived all of his life in Moreau. He worked for 35 years at Scott Paper Company in Fort Edward and retired in 1980 as a paper mill foreman. During World War II, he served in the European Theatre in the 410th Infantry Regiment, 103rd Infantry Division, Company 1. He also fought in the Battle of the Bulge and was awarded the Purple Heart. He married Evelyn Farley, of Hudson Falls, on April 20, 1947. Bill was an avid gardener, enjoyed traveling, and loved to spend time with his family. He also enjoyed carpentry and built his first house entirely by hand. He also built his present residence and helped his children with the construction of their homes. He was an active member of the South Glens Falls Baptist Church and attended the Seniors' Group. He was predeceased by an infant daughter, Kathleen F. Jacobie, and an infant granddaughter, Jennifer S. Pliscofsky; his parents, two sisters, Alberta Viele and Bernice Kory; and three brothers, Raymond, Milton and Charles. Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Evelyn Farley Jacobie; his children, Marilyn K. Sheerer and her husband, Michael, of Birdsboro Pa., Kevin W. Jacobie and his wife, Barbara, of Moreau, Laurie S. Russell and her husband, Ken, of Wells, Vt., Phillip Abraham, who lived with them for many years and his wife, Debbie, of Pittsfield, Mass.; grandchildren, Andrea, Eric and Chad Pliscofsky, Melanie, David and Bradley Sheerer, Kathleen and Adam Jacobie; two brothers, Ernest and Melvin Jacobie, both of Moreau. He was eagerly expecting a great-grandchild in April. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at the First Baptist Church of South Glens Falls, 386 Saratoga Road, South Glens Falls. Lincoln, 98, a lifelong resident of the North Country, passed away Sunday, Feb. 27, 2005, at Fort Hudson Nursing Home in Fort Edward. Born Jan. 11, 1907, in Pottersville, she was the daughter of James and Louise (Burdick) Meade. Edith married Ralph Lincoln in 1925 and the couple enjoyed 39 wonderful years together. During their early years together, Edith and Ralph were caretakers at Northwoods Club in Minerva. Edith also co-owned and operated with her brother Archie Meade, the B & M Hardware Store in Chestertown for more than 25 years before retiring. She enjoyed attending and making quilts with the women at the North River Methodist Church. She was an avid outdoorswoman who loved to hunt, fish and water witch. Besides her husband, three brothers, Ashley, Ken and Archie Meade; and one sister, Mina Moffitt, have all predeceased her. Survivors include her nieces and nephews, Edna Belmore of Queensbury, the Rev. Ashley Meade of Granville, Geraldine Britton of Garnet Lake, Betty Sayers of Garnet Lake, Margaret Harrington of Glens Falls, Edwin Meade of Glens Falls, James Meade of Queensbury, Daniel Meade of Glens Falls, Marie Montena of Sodom and Kenneth Meade of North Creek. She also leaves many grandnieces and nephews and cousins. Friends may call on Edith's family from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Alexander Funeral Home, Inc., 4479 state Route 28, North River. Lockrow, Donna Marie Pottstown, Pa. -- Donna Marie Lockrow, 49, formerly of Cambridge and Hoosick Falls, passed on unexpectedly at her home on Friday, Feb. 25, 2005. She was the wife of Gary S. Lockrow. Born Wednesday, Nov. 16, 1955, in Albany, Donna grew up in Hoosick Falls and attended Hoosick Falls Central School. She and Gary were married on March 30, 1974. Donna worked for several years as an assistant manager at Rite Aide Pharmacy, as a waitress at the Wayside Restaurant in Potter's Hill, and at National Hanger Company in North Bennington. Since 1993, she has been a full-time homemaker. Donna and Gary moved to Route 22 in Cambridge in 2002. They joined Jacob's Well Fellowship and were very active in the church. This past fall they moved to Pennsylvania to be near their daughter and grandchildren. She enjoyed doing crafts, cooking, decorating, gardening, reading, collecting dolls, and photography. She loved animals. Donna had a wonderful relationship with the Lord and spent much time, and found much strength and comfort in deepening that relationship. Gary and Donna's son, Gary S. Lockrow Jr., died Sept. 9, 1981. She was also predeceased by her stepfather, Robert J. Blakey Sr. Along with her husband of 30 years, she is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Amanda and Dale LeClare of Pottstown; her mother, Delores Bergeron Blakey of Hoosick Falls; four siblings, Robert Blakey Jr. of Bennington, Charles Blakey, Richard Blakey and Lisa Ogert, all of Hoosick Falls; and two granddaughters that she adored, Isabelle and Juliette. Friends and relatives are invited to call on Tuesday, March 1, 2005, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Jacob's Well Fellowship, 181 LeGrys Road, Cambridge. A funeral service will be held at the church on Wednesday, March 2, at 10 a.m.. Burial will follow at the West Hoosick Cemetery. Royal, Anna Schuylerville -- Anna Royal, 93, a resident of Haas Road, died Monday, Feb. 28, 2005, at the Saratoga Hospital. Born Oct. 23, 1911, in Dunmore, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Nicholas and Mary Stanko Yackovich. Anna was a former employee of the Sheridan Catheter in Argyle and she enjoyed sewing and was an excellent baker. A resident of Schuylerville for the past 53 years, she was a communicant of Notre Dame-Visitation Church in Schuylerville and a member of the Church St. Anne/Rosary Society. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Michael Royal, who died in 1967. Survivors include her children, Richard Royal of Schuylerville, Donald Royal of Stevens City, Va., and Diane Royal of Schuylerville; her brother, Edward Yackovich of Clifton, N.J.; her sisters, Eleanor Yackovich of Clifton, N.J., and Catherine Allen of Passaic, N.J.; a granddaughter, two great-grandsons, and several nieces and nephews. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 3, 2005, at Notre Dame-Visitation Church, Pearl Street, Schuylerville, with the Rev. Christopher Welch, pastor, officiating. Spofford, Earl "Harold" HUDSON FALLS -- Earl "Harold" Spofford, 79, formerly of Farley Road, passed away Sunday, Feb. 27, 2005, at the Eden Park Health Care Center, in Glens Falls. Harold was born on Sept. 30, 1925, in Kissimmee, Fla. He attended Fort Edward Schools. Harold was injured in the line of duty, serving in the U.S. Army in World War II. His first wife, Julia (Barfoot) Spofford and his second wife, Gwendolyn (Wilson) Spofford, both passed away before him. He was a policeman in Fort Edward for a time and then was employed for Washington County in the maintenance department. Mr. Spofford was formerly a resident of River Street in Hudson Falls. Harold was a past member of the Fort Edward Rescue Squad, Inc., and the Hudson Falls American Legion Post 574. He loved trains, motorcycles, camping and going for rides and trips in his car. Harold was also a pilot, and loved to fly. Besides his wives and parents, he was predeceased by a daughter, Gale Spofford Riley; a son, David McQuain; and a brother, Scott Spofford. His survivors include, four sons, Robbin J. Spofford and his companion, Colleen, of South Glens Falls, Brian M. Spofford of Atlanta, Ga., Charles H. Spofford of Florida; and Earl McQuain and his wife, Diane, of Glens Falls; one daughter, Linda A. Perkins of Fort Edward; 10 grandchildren, Tonyalynn Spofford, Laura Shay Spofford, Jonathan F. Spofford, Elizabeth Marie Spofford, Christopher Riley, Charles T. Spofford, Gale Marie Spofford, Dorie Lyn Spofford, Julie Marie Spofford, Dena C. Trybendis and Shelly Marie Mabb; several great-grandchildren; two nephews; and several cousins. South Glens Falls -- Richard C. Strong of South Glens Falls died on Saturday, Feb. 26, 2005, at his home. Born on Feb. 26, 1934, in Plattsburgh, N.Y., he was the son of the late Carleton Strong and Mertie Wrisley Strong of Willsboro, N.Y. Dick graduated from Willsboro Central School in 1951. He served in the U.S. Army from 1956 to 1958. Dick's favorite pastime was spending time with his grandchildren. He also enjoyed boats and cars. He is survived by his mother, Mertie Strong of Willsboro; his ex-wife, Sandy Costin; his son, Jamie Strong; his daughter, Julie Nicholson and her husband, Clyde, and their son, Dustin and daughter, Rachiel, all of South Glens Falls; his brother, Ronald Strong and his wife, Joan, of Willsboro; his sister, Shirley Phillips of Morrisonville; and several nieces and nephews. His aunts, Velitia Shepard of Willsboro, Ella Murphy of New Jersey and Carol Wrisley of Connecticut also survive him. No calling hours are scheduled. Services will be conducted at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in the spring. Arrangements are under the direction of Regan & Denny Funeral Home, 94 Saratoga Ave., South Glens Falls.
