HARTFORD -- Vernetta M. Chapin passed away on Friday, March 18, 2005, at her home. Vernetta was born on July 26, 1922, in Granville, the daughter of Russell and Leta (Blanchard) Potter. Vernetta was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She loved music and was a gifted musician. She played the accordion. Over the years she played with several local bands. Vernetta was the widow of Floyd Chapin. In addition to her husband, she was also predeceased by two brothers, Vernon R. Potter and Victor J. Potter. Survivors are her sister, Vivian Pauquette and her husband, Bernie, of Whitehall; and two sisters-in-law, Ruth Armstrong of Hartford and Norma Inman of Granville. She is also survived by a very special nephew and neighbor, whom she thought of like a son, Richard Armstrong and his wife, Nancy, of Hartford. Also several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, March 21, 2005, at Robert M. King Funeral Home, 23 Church St., Granville with the Rev. Kristi Culver officiating. Friends may call from 1 to 2 p.m. Monday at the funeral home prior to the the funeral service. Burial will be in the spring at Morningside Cemetery in Hartford. Queensbury -- Gilbert W. Darrah Sr., 78, passed away Thursday, March 17, 2005, at Glens Falls Hospital. Born on July 5, 1926, in Cadyville, N.Y., he was the son of the late Gilbert and Margurite (Dutton) Darrah. Gilbert was a veteran of the United States Marine Corp, serving in World War II and Korean Conflict. He was a life member of the B.P.O.E. 81 Glens Falls, and a member of the VFW in New Paltz. Gilbert loved to bowl, play golf, and go fishing. His parents and his sister, Hazel Decker, predeceased him. Gilbert is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Ida M. (Stark) Darrah of Queensbury; his children, Gilbert Darrah Jr. and his wife, Lynne, of Plattekill, N.Y., Stephen Darrah and his wife, Blen, of Plattekill, N.Y., Christine Schwartz of Ghent, N.Y., Donna Schwenk of Tillson, N.Y., and Dennis Darrah of Crystal River, Fla. His brothers, Kenneth Darrah of Danbury, Conn., Robert Darrah, and Lawerence Darrah, both of Cadyville, N.Y.; and his two sisters, Flora Collins of Plattsburgh, N.Y., and Jean Tamer of Cadyville, N.Y.; along with 15 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren, also survive him. A funeral service will be held today, March 22, at 10:30 a.m. at Regan and Denny Funeral Home, 53 Quaker Road, Queensbury. Burial will follow at Pine View Cemetery, Queensbury. Guiles, 75, of Luzerne Road, went into the arms of the Lord, joining his beloved mother and grandson, on Saturday, March 19, 2005, at Glens Falls Hospital. Born on April 24, 1929, he was the son of the late Harry and Bertha (Lowry) Guiles. Lou was a U.S. Coast Guard Veteran of World War II and received an honorary diploma from Hudson Falls High School. He worked at Tampella Sandy Hill in Hudson Falls for 45 years, retiring in 1992. Lou was a devoted husband, father and grandfather, a hard-working, generous man who always took care of his family and lent a helping hand to others. He built his own house and enjoyed taking care of his yard. In his younger years, he enjoyed picnics and camping trips with his children. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by one grandson, Daniel Shalhoub, in 1995. In addition to his loving wife of 55 years, Marilyn Wood Guiles, he is survived by his daughter, Brenda Shalhoub and her husband, Joseph, of Mayfield; a daughter, Debra Meyers and her husband, Thomas, of Annapolis, Md.; his grandchildren, Heather and Crystal Shalhoub and Lora and Thomas Meyers Jr.; and several nieces and nephews. Merritt, Harrison John ALEXANDRIA, Va. -- Harrison John Merritt, Col., USA (Ret.) entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, March 16, 2005, at Alexandria Hospital, Alexandria, Va. He was preceded in death by his mother, Mildred Cunningham; his father, Harrison Merritt; his stepfather, Loren Cunningham; and his three brothers: Wayne Merritt, William Merritt, and Charles Merritt (Col., USA). Survivors include his wife, Rose (D'Angelo) Merritt; a daughter, Donna M. Garlick and her husband, Richard E. Garlick Jr.; and two grandsons, Richard E. Garlick III and Harrison M. Garlick. During the period of his distinguished military career, Col. Merritt served in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater of Operations during World War II. Subsequent overseas assignments included Germany, Korea, Japan and Burma. He served with the 11th Airborne Division, the 82nd Airborne Division, the 10th Special Forces Group, First Special Forces and the American Embassy in Rangoon, Burma. Col. Merritt was the recipient of the Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Silver Star with Cluster, and the Bronze Star with Cluster. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday, March 21, at St. Mary's Church, 62 Warren St., Glens Falls, with the Rev. James Mackey, pastor, officiating. Bob was born on Sept. 1, 1946, in Whitehall, the son of Robert and Jensie (Maldarella) Parker. Tinker was a member of the Elks Club and the Sons of the American Legion. He was a self-employed roofer and carpenter. He enjoyed playing cards, pool, playing the horses and fishing. In addition to his mother, Tinker is survived by his wife, Evelyn Parker; a son, Larry Andrews and his wife, Laurie, of Bennington, Vt.; three daughters, Jackie Andrews and her fianc‚, Dar Williams, of Queensbury, Leach Michaud and her husband, Tony, of Milford, N.H., and Bobbie Parker of Granville. Tinker is also survived by two brothers, Danny Parker of Whitehall and Terry Parker and his wife, Cherrie, of Granville; six sisters, Jensie Parker and her companion, Frenchie Sheehy, of Granville, June Stark and her husband, Roscoe, of Whitehall, Violet Landon and her husband, James, of Granville, Nikki Pomainville and her companion, Jim Konky, of Salem, Mass., Toni Watson and her husband, Art, of Granville, and Robin Goff and her husband, Donald, of Kingsbury; also eight grandchildren; and several special aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces and cousins. GLENS FALLS -- Thomas J. Record, 54, of Hoyt Avenue, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, March 18, 2005, at his home. Born on Nov. 22, 1950, in Glens Falls, he was the son of Palma (Gitto) Record and the late Thomas A. Record. Tom was a 1970 graduate of Hudson Falls High School. On Sept. 27, 1986, he married Debra Granger at the United Methodist Church of Hudson Falls. Tom was employed at SCA Tissue in South Glens Falls for 25 years. He was a lifelong Yankees fan and an avid collector of baseball memorabilia. Tom was a caring husband and father. Survivors besides his wife of 18 years, Debra (Granger) Record of Glens Falls, include; a daughter, Shannon Record of Glens Falls; two brothers, Michael L. Record of Hudson Falls and Matthew M. Published in the Post-Star on 3/20/2005. Rehm, Alton E. WHITEHALL -- Alton E. Rehm, 71, of County Route 12, passed away on Friday, March 18, 2005, at Glens Falls Hospital. Born on Nov. 5, 1933, in Whitehall, he was the son of the late Harold and Edna (Hyatt) Rehm. Alton proudly served in the United States Air Force as a prop mechanic from 1952 to 1956. He was a former employee of Ciba Geigy in Glens Falls where he worked for many years. Alton enjoyed woodworking and trout fishing. He also enjoyed trips to Maine and the Amish country in Pennsylvania. He was an avid Giant, NASCAR and Yankees fan and also liked visiting Civil War battlefields and watching Revolutionary re-enactments. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, whom he married on June 8, 1956, Mildred (Mickel) Rehm of Whitehall; four sons, Harry Rehm and his wife, Brenda, of Whitehall and their children, Kaylyn and Chloe; Curtis Rehm and his wife, Judy, of Fort Ann and their children, Justin and his wife, Krista, of Fort Ann and Juliana; Alton Rehm and his wife, JoAnn of Whitehall and their children, Seth of Plattsburgh, Eric of Albany and Luke of Whitehall; and Charles Rehm and his wife, Susan, of Grahmansville, N.Y., and their children, Olivia and Katie Jo; one daughter, Donna Burge and her husband, Allan, of Warwick, N.Y., and his former son-in-law, David Donlon of Hadlock Pond; two brothers, Phillip Rehm and his wife, Bette, of Clemons, and Edward Rehm and his wife, Ella, of Clemons; three sisters, Josie Kamuda of Wallingford, Vt., Allie Barber of Clemons, and Edna Rehm of Granville; and many nieces and nephews; and his friends, Gary French and Robert and Stella Mickel. Stetson, 80, of Thirteenth Lake Road, passed away at Adirondack Tri-County Health Care Center, North Creek, on Saturday morning, March 19, 2005, following a long illness. Born Jan. 7, 1925, in Tupper Lake, he was a son of the late William F. and Delva (Tebo) Stetson. He served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II. William was married to Barbara J. Harvey on May 26, 1973. He was an avid outdoorsman and had a passion for hunting and fishing in the Adirondacks, as well as an occasional moose-hunting trip to Newfoundland. Bill also owned and operated Stetson's General Store, a sporting goods outfitter, in North River until 1970, when he closed the store and became an Independent trucker and transporter until his retirement in the early 1980s. William is survived by his wife, Barbara J. Stetson of North River; a daughter, Mary Crim and her husband, Bob, of Palm Bay, Fla.; a son, William Stetson III and wife, Maureen, of Charlotte, N.C.; five grandsons; one granddaughter; one great-granddaughter; one great-grandson; two brothers, Robert and Gordon Stetson, both of Pottersville; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by two sisters, Buelah Kozincki and Joyce Cunningham. At William's request, there will be no calling hours or funeral services. Warner, 71, a resident of Luzerne Road, passed away on Thursday, March 17, 2005, at her home, surrounded by her loving family. Born Sept. 2, 1933, in Glens Falls, she was the daughter of the late Edward and Agnes (Sanders) Bannon. Mary loved being a mother to her children. She always wanted and enjoyed being with them. They took family trail bike rides, with "Mom and Karen eating everyone's dust," loving every minute of it. She played a big part in their lives that carried over to the grandchildren. She insisted on baby-sitting her grandchildren. She recorded herself reading children's books so that they always had Grandma to read to them. Her cherished things in life were her family, but then again, anyone who came to their house to visit was family. Besides Mary's parents, her husband of 54 years, Harold D. Warner Jr., who passed away on Dec. 25, 2000, and her brother, Samuel Bannon, predeceased her. Mary's survivors include her children, Chris Warner of Queensbury, Karen Hamell and her husband, David, of Queensbury, Billy Warner Sr. of Queensbury, Johnny Warner and his girlfriend, Mary Shear, of Queensbury, Arthur L. Warner and his fiancee, Gerry Lynn Johnson, of Queensbury and Scott L. Warner of Queensbury; grandchildren, Jean, Christine, Mark, Todd, Eric, Joshua, Jennifer, Billy Jr., Brittany, Amanda and Zachary; five great-grandchildren; a brother, David Bannon of South Carolina; and a sister, Betsy Bannon of Corinth.
