PLATTSBURGH -- Daniel L. Adams, 53, of Broadway Road, died peacefully Wednesday, March 23, 2005, at his home with his wife and two daughters at his side, after a courageous battle with colon cancer. The love that Dan felt for his family and friends defined his life. He is survived by his wife, the former Susan Parker of Hudson Falls, whom he married on June 12, 1971, at St. Paul's Church; two daughters and son-in-law, Danielle (Adams) and Alex Mehlman of Westwood, Mass., and Becca Adams currently of Ithaca; his granddaughters, who were his primary inspiration to seek out innovative treatments to fight his cancer, Alexa Adams Mehlman and Quinn Rebecca Mehlman; his father, Edward Adams of Plattsburgh; one sister and her husband, Beverly (Adams) and Peter Harrigan of Plattsburgh; two brothers and their wives, Tom and Kathy Adams of Plattsburgh, BJ and Kelly Adams of Beaufort, SC; a brother-in-law, Robert J. Parker of Hudson Falls; several nieces and nephews, Kristin, Jessica and Sean Harrigan, Stacy and Mark Adams, Edward Adams, Michael, Bradley and Jenny Parker; a great-nephew, Daniel Adams; three godsons and one goddaughter; and numerous dear friends in Plattsburgh and around the country. Dan was predeceased by his mother, Ruth M. Adams in December, 2004, and his father and mother-in-law, Robert and Helen Parker of Hudson Falls. Second to Dan's dedication to his family and friends was his dedication to serving his community. He was born in Plattsburgh on June 22, 1951, to Edward and Ruth Adams and assumed many leadership roles in the community. A local business owner of Adams Glass from 1973 to the present, he was a past board member of the Plattsburgh City School District, YMCA, SUNY Plattsburgh College Foundation, Clinton County Airport committee, United Way allocations board, and the PHS Hall of Fame Committee. Dan was the former honorary squadron commander and co-chairman of the Plattsburgh Air Base Liaison Committee and also served as president and secretary/treasurer of IAABO board 43 of the local basketball officials. He was a PHS Hall of Fame Inductee in 2002, recipient of the Small Business of the Year award given by the Clinton County Chamber of Commerce, a member of the Wild Goose Club and a former licensed pilot. In recent years, he enjoyed riding his newly purchased Ford Mustang, snowmobiles, four-wheeler and Harley Davidson motorcycle, as well as spending time in the Adirondacks and reconnecting with friends. Barden, Virginia Washburn BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Virginia Washburn Barden, 88, died peacefully Wednesday evening, March 23, 2005, on the Reminiscence Unit of Beverly Healthcare in Bloomington, Ind. Born June 16, 1916, in Gansevoort, she was the eldest of three daughters of Hiram Ernest and Hazel Marsh Washburn. She was a 1933 graduate of Glens Falls High School and a 1937 graduate of Russell Sage College in Troy, where she majored in French and English. She described her college education as a single most important achievement of her life. Virginia was a high school teacher in Newfield, N.Y. from 1937 to 1942. On May 24, 1941, she became the beloved wife of Paul William Barden, to whom she was married for 61 years. They were the loving parents of their five children. Intent on encouraging and providing college educations for each of her children, Virginia returned to teaching high school French and English at Ripley Central School in Ripley from 1960 until her retirement in 1978. After her retirement, she developed her interest in family genealogy and local history and became an active member and leader in the Chautauqua County Historical Society. She will be remembered for her diligent effort to search, transcribe and preserve historical county records. She also served as a town of Ripley historian. Virginia was also an important member and former president of the Chautauqua County Genealogical Society. A primary source genealogist, she compiled and authored 10 publications and was a contributor to many of the publications of the society. She was a respected and knowledgeable genealogy lecturer in the Western New York area. She was also a longtime member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Ripley. Virginia was innately curious and well read and possessed an intelligent, quick wit, a capacity for succinct and imaginative description, and strong organizational skill. She enjoyed bird watching, collecting and refinishing antiques, and she was an accomplished seamstress, knitter, and quilter. Her interests and accuracy were slowed by the development of Lewy Body Dementia. In its early stages she insisted on diagnosis and information about her illness. Ever the teacher, she displayed poise, grace, humor and dignity throughout her illness. She was preceded in death by her husband in 2002; and her eldest son, Peter Marsh Barden in February 2005. Virginia is survived by her two sisters, Jane Washburn of Gansevoort and Reignette Faulkner of Albany, Ga.. She is also survived by four of her children: Paul Wallace Barden of Tucson, Ariz., Daniel William Barden of Plymouth, Ind., Deborah Barden Curtis of Bloomington, Ind. and Jane Elizabeth Lewis of Warren, Pa., each of their souses; her eight grandsons; her three granddaughters; and her eight great-grandchildren. Private burial services will be at East Ripley Cemetery, Ripley, N.Y. A memorial service, to be announced at a later date, will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Ripley. Published in the Post-Star on 3/26/2005. Cheney, David N. DURKEETOWN -- David N. Cheney, 68, of County Route 46, died Friday, March 25, 2005, at Glens Falls Hospital after a short illness. Born on Sept. 26, 1936, in Barre, Vt., he was the son of William Perry and Ruth (Hubbell) Cheney Sr. Dave graduated from Vermont Technical College in Randolph, Vt., in 1955. He then went to Syracuse and worked for New Idea Farm Machine. In 1956, Dave joined the Army and was a paratrooper with the 82 Airborne in Fayetteville, N.C. He married Esther Fay (Schaffer) on June 3, 1958, in Dillon, S.C., and the couple moved to Long Island, then moved to Syracuse, where Dave worked in electronics. The couple then moved to Adamsville in 1960 and began farming, and then in 1969, moved to Durkeetown and farmed until 1984. From 1984 until present, Dave ran Dave Cheney Trucking/Aqua-Trans and was called the "Water Man" by many. Dave was a member of the Herchel-Argyle Lodge No. 508 Free and Accepted Masons, the Vermont Flying Farmers, the Glens Falls Pilots Association and the Argyle Flying Club. He enjoyed flying, tractor pulling, riding his Harley, meeting his many friends at local diners, working on engines and driving his truck. He was also a proud graduate of the Bondurant School of Racing, Arizona. Besides his parents, he was also predeceased by three brothers, William Perry Cheney Jr., Merritt E. Cheney, and Merton L. Cheney; and his sister, Mary Ann Austin. Survivors besides his wife of 46 years include his children, Capt. David S. Cheney and his wife, Theresa, of Gansevoort, and Fay "Gidget" Cheney of Argyle; his grandchildren: Benjamin, Daniel, Casey and Taliyah Cheney; his brothers and sisters, Arthur F. Cheney and his wife, Florence, of Bath, N.H., Linda M. Schlichting and her husband, Allan, of Moravia, N.Y., Sarah L. Booth of San Antonio, Texas, Harold L. Cheney and his wife, Dorothy, of Berkshire, N.Y., Gertrude E. Fisher of New Jersey, and Ruth Ryan of Madison, Miss., and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Doyle, age 84, of Dayton Drive, died Thursday evening, March 24, 2005, at Glens Falls Hospital. Born on Aug. 5, 1920, in Edwards, she was the daughter of Frank and Grace (Powers) Walrath. She attended Fowler School and graduated from Gouverneur High School in 1938. On Jan. 31, 1939, she married Mindon H. Woodward Jr. She married William O. Doyle Sr. on May 23, 1981. He died on Sept. 25, 1992. Mrs. Doyle lived in the Gouverneur area until 1981 when she moved to Black Lake, and in 1992 moved to live with her daughter in Lake Luzerne. Mrs. Doyle had been employed at St. Lawrence Inn, Hilltop Restaurant, Fullerville Inn, Nina's Hotel, Hermon Hotel, DeKalb Hotel, Riverside Hotel and the Maples of Morley. She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Lake Luzerne, and enjoyed crafts, quilting and cooking. Mrs. Doyle was predeceased by two daughters, Judy Conley and Jean McIntosh; one grandson, Larry John McIntosh; one brother, Glen Walrath; and one stepson, William O. Doyle Jr. Survivors include one daughter, Doreen Clement of Elmira; two sons, Terry Woodward Sr. of Warrensburg and Timothy Woodward Sr. of Jennings, La.; two stepdaughters, Patricia Stowe and her husband, Raymond, of Ogdensburg, and Mary Newby of Black Lake; three sisters: Betty Stevens of Gouverneur, Jane Murdie of Gouverneur, and Leona Hurlbut of Heuvelton; one brother, Keith Walrath Sr. of Massena; 16 grandchildren; nine stepgrandchildren; 33 great- grandchildren; 13 stepgreat-grandchildren; one great-great- grandson, Stephen George Savage of Ocean City N.J. (whom she proudly saw off to school on his first day of kindergarten this past September); and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was born Sept. 5, 1948, in Philadelphia, Pa., the son of the late Raymond and Marion (Graham) Eichler. Walt was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps, serving in Vietnam. He worked for Scott Paper Co. for 28 years before becoming a SAP consultant for iTelligence Corporation in Cincinnati. He loved to go boating on Lake George, and enjoyed gardening, fishing and puttering around the house. "He was a man in need of a project." His parents and also his infant daughter predeceased him. Walt is survived by his wife, Robin (Anderson) Eichler of Queensbury; their daughters, Kristin Fawn (Eichler) Raab and her husband, Christopher, of Lancaster, Pa., and Jennie Anderson Eichler of Queensbury; his sister, Sally Eichler Owens and her husband, Carl, of Plymouth, Mich.; his brother, John Eichler and his wife, Carole, of Saline, Mich; his wife's mother, Helen Anderson of Berlin, N.J.; along with her sisters and their families, several nieces and nephews; and his close circle of boating friends. Holman, Robert Edward STEVENSVILLE, Pa. -- Robert Edward Holman, 60, of Stevensville, Pa., and formerly of Ticonderoga, died Saturday, March 19, 2005, at Towanda Memorial Hospital, Towanda, Pa., following a long illness. Born on Oct. 3, 1944, in Ticonderoga, he was the son of Vera (Crossman) Holman of Whitehall, and the late Robert Holman. Robert was an avid bingo and lottery player and enjoyed working on cars. Two infant sons, Leonard Steven Holman and Christopher Holman, three sisters, Barbara Dufault, Rose Hallock and Brenda Holman, and one brother, Lonnie Holman, predeceased him. Survivors besides his mother, include three daughters: Tammy Holman of Ticonderoga, Lisa Holman and Darlene Holman of Port Henry; one son, Robert Holman of Ticonderoga; one brother, Richard Holman and his wife, Debbie, of Whitehall, two sisters, Jackie Flack and her husband, Edward, of Ticonderoga, and Linda Stark of Ticonderoga. He is also survived by several grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be conducted at 7 p.m. on Tuesday at Michael G. Published in the Post-Star from 3/22/2005 - 3/27/2005. Lally, Thelma Perkins SCHENECTADY -- Thelma Perkins Lally, of Ruffner Road, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 22, 2005, at her home. Born on Nov. 16, 1912, in West Burlington, N.Y. (Otsego County), she was the daughter of Grover and Agatha Telfer Perkins. Thelma was a 1930 graduate of Hartwick High School and Cobleskill Agriculture and Technical School. She received her teaching degree from the Oneonta Normal School. She taught at the Patent School in the town of Burlington and the Waterville Central School. Thelma married Kenneth T. Lally on July 11, 1939. Thelma and Ken moved to Schenectady where Thelma taught at a "one-room" schoolhouse in Glenville, and in the Niskayuna School District. She was a dedicated teacher for more than 35 years and was greatly admired and respected by both her colleagues and her students. Thelma and Ken were very active throughout her life, supporting and providing leadership, service and financial support to a great many area educational and health care institutions and community service organizations. A partial list of organizations that have benefited from Thelma and Ken's interest and involvement includes: the Albany Catholic Diocese, Albany Medical Center, Catholic Central High School, College of Saint Rose, Ellis Hospital, Girls, Inc., Junior Museum of Troy, LaSalle School, Mohawk Pathways Girl Scouts, Northeast Parent and Child, Proctor's Theatre, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Samaritan Hospital, Siena College, Schenectady County Community College, St. Clare's Hospital, St. Helen's Parish, Sunnyview Rehabilitation Hospital, Union College and the YMCA. As a tribute to their longtime devotion to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, RPI named its Graduate Business School the Kenneth T. and Thelma P. Lally School of Management and Technology. Thelma and her husband received the "Philanthropists of the Year" award for their support of charities in the Capital Region from the National Society of Fundraising Executives in 1994, and in 1999 they were honored with the Citizen Laureate Award from the University at Albany Foundation. Thelma was recognized for her passion for education and teaching excellence by the College of Saint Rose, which conferred upon her the honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters in 1999. In recognition of Thelma's support of the college and funding provided by she and Ken, Saint Rose named its new signature building the Thelma P. Lally School of Education in 2003. Thelma also served as an officer, director and trustee of numerous other educational and community organizations. Mrs. Lally is survived by her devoted husband of more than 65 years, Kenneth T. Lally; her sister, Diana Marlette; a sister-in-law, Mary Lally; her brothers-in-law and their wives, John and Dorothy Lally, and Robert and Colleen Lally; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sister, Hilda Tamas, a sister-in-law, Helen Fischer; and three brothers-in-law, Joseph Tamas, Howard Marlette and Howard Lally. Mrs. Lally's family is very grateful to the nurses who have provided such loving care to Thelma for the past several years. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 29, at St. John the Evangelist Church on Union Street in Schenectady. PLYMOUTH, Mass. -- Catherine E. Walsh, 70, formerly of Newton, Mass. and Saratoga Springs, passed away Thursday, March 24, 2005 at Life Care Center in Plymouth, Mass. Born Feb. 8, 1935, in Saratoga Springs, she was the daughter of the late Francis and Emma (Phetteplace) Walsh. She was educated at St. Peters Academy in Saratoga and received her BS from Curry College in Nursing and attended U Mass in Boston. Catherine was a registered nurse, working at Harvard University for more than 16 years as a nurse research assistant. She was the beloved sister of William Walsh and his wife, Jane, of Corinth, and John Walsh of California; cousin of Mary Williams of New York and Dan Carhart of Vermont; aunt of Michael Walsh of New York, Catherine Lozier of New York and William Walsh of New York. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 30, at St. Peters Church in Plymouth, Mass. There are no calling hours. Cremation will be at Duxbury Crematory. Westcott, Mabel L. EAST POULTNEY, Vt. -- Mabel L. Wescott, age 98, passed away Friday, March 25, 2005, at her residence in East Poultney, Vt. with her family by her side. Mabel was born on April 7, 1906, in Wells, Vt., the daughter of the late Charles and Bertha (Juckett) Lake. She boarded at the the Troy Conference Academy for two years and graduated in 1923. Mabel was a graduate of Castleton State Teachers College and earned a masters degree in education and a certificate of Advance Graduate Study from the University of Hartford, Conn. Mabel married Phil Wescott in the East Poultney Baptist Church Parsonage on July 22, 1928. Mr. and Mrs. Wescott resided in East Poultney for many years. Mabel was employed as elementary school teacher in Connecticut, Poultney, and surrounding towns. She was a very active member for many years of the United Baptist Church of East Poultney. Mabel was a leader of the Deep Rocks Boys 4-H Club. She also worked as a volunteer at the Poultney Young at Heart Club, where she was a bingo caller, exercise leader, and Meals-on-Wheels delivery person. Mabel was a lifetime member and past president of the Rutland County Retired Teachers Association. She was also a member of the Vermont State Retired Teachers Association. Mabel was a past member of the Poultney Valley Grange and a member of the Tunix Grange in Bloomfield, Conn. Mabel was a member of the Poultney and the Middletown Springs Historical Society. She was a past president of the Society of Stukely Westcott, Descendants of America. Mabel is survived by one son, Charles Willard Wescott of Rutland; four daughters: Wilma W. Avery of New Jersey, Pauline Dennis Schumann of Sheffield, Mass., Phyliss A Reed of Wells, Vt., and Velma J. Reed of East Poultney; 16 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; 16 great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, H. Phillips Wescott in 1959; two brothers, Robert Lake and William Lake; two grandsons, Phillip James Reed and Keith Allen Reed. Relatives and friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at Roberts-Aubin Funeral Home in Poultney. A funeral service will take place at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the United Baptist Church of Poultney. The interm pastor, Glen C. Bachelder and the Rev. Stephen R. Payne will co-officiate.
