Born on Sept. 9, 1931, in Fair Haven, Vt., he was the son of the late William and Emma (Woodward) Dayton. He married Shirley Elaine Ward Moore on Nov. 28, 1959, at the United Methodist Church in Fair Haven, Vt. Bill graduated in 1948 from Fair Haven High School, where he played football, basketball and baseball. He attended Castleton State College. He was an avid reader and enjoyed softball and ice fishing. A lifelong country music fan, he especially loved George Jones, Eddie Arnold and Charlie Pride. He also enjoyed cooking and served as a volunteer cook for the American Legion and United Methodist Church for many years. Bill served in the Marine Corps from February 1951 to February 1954, rising to the rank of corporal and was awarded the USMC Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Service Medal and the Untied Nations Service Medal. A hard worker all his life, he worked in the slate quarry, as a bouncer, as an independent house painter and carpet cleaner, and at Jumbo's IGA in Whitehall. He retired September 1993, after 31 years as a New York State correctional officer. As a correctional officer, he was employed at Mattewan State Hospital, Great Meadow Correctional Facility, and Washington Correctional Facility. Bill was a member of Council 82 New York State Correctional Officers Labor Union, B.P.O.E. Lodge No. 1491 of Whitehall, American Legion Post No. 49 Fair Haven, Vt., and Post No. 83 Whitehall, and was affiliated with the United Methodist Church. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by three brothers, Clarence "Tad" Dayton, Clifford Dayton and Albert "Ab" Dayton. Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Shirley Dayton; his children: Nancy E. Moore and her companion, Clark Skinner, of Whitehall, James Moore and his companion, Paula Ferguson, of Rome, and Timothy Dayton and his wife, Angela Hubler, of Manhattan, Kansas; five grandchildren: Theodore Barkley III, Jodi Moore LaLone, Julie Moore, Neil Dayton and Jack Dayton; three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Eleanor Dayton Bushey and Mary "Betty" Dayton Stevens; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. There will be no calling hours. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 5, at Jillson Funeral Home, Inc., 46 Williams St., Whitehall, with the Rev. C. Published in the Post-Star on 5/4/2005. Dolen, Diane Mary (DePalo) SCOTIA -- Diane Mary (DePalo) Dolen, 57, of Compton Place, passed away peacefully at home, on Saturday, April 30, 2005. Born on Sept. 29, 1947, at Glens Falls Hospital, she was the daughter of Patrick and Constance (Barney) DePalo of Hudson Falls. She was employed as a supervising nurse at Prestwick Chase in Saratoga, until her illness. Diane was a loving, compassionate, and caring person who took great pride in the care of her patients. Her greatest enjoyment was watching her sons sporting events and seeing them achieve their academic goals. She was the loving mother of two sons, Christopher and Michael Dolen, both of Scotia. Beside her parents, other survivors include her five sisters: Susan DePalo of Hudson Falls, Connie Steele of Hudson Falls, Mary Joan Baggot and her husband, Richard, of Ohio, Barbara Comstock and her husband, Keith, of Hudson Falls and Patricia DePalo of California; her nieces and nephew: Amy and Allison Steele, Angela and Rachel Baggot, Kaitlin and Kenneth Comstock; and her many cousins. She is also survived by her devoted dog, Dharma. Her family would like to thank Dr. Susan Weaver and all her caregivers who provided loving care and support at home. Earley, 70, of Peaceful Valley Road, formerly of Wells, passed away on Saturday, April 30, 2005, at his home following a long illness. Born May 2, 1934, he was a son of the late James and Nellie (Savage) Earley. Jim was employed by Barton Mines Corp. of North River as a truck driver for several years before his retirement. He was an avid outdoorsman, who enjoyed hunting, fishing and bird-watching. He was a member of the North Creek American Baptist Church. Jim was predeceased by his close companion, Irma Myers, in March of 2001; his brothers, Chester and George; and sisters, Gladys, Margaret and Alice. Survivors include his son, James P. Earley of Boston, Mass.; two daughters, Jodi B. Coonrod and her husband, Donald, of Schenectady, and Laura Bean and husband, James, of Dover Plains; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three brothers, Howard, Clay and Harold Earley; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Friedricks, Barbara Sylvia (Lebowitz) SEA CLIFF, N.Y -- Barbara Sylvia (Lebowitz) Friedricks, age 77, passed away the afternoon of Monday, May 2, 2005, after a lengthy illness. Born on March 22, 1928, in Glens Falls, Barbara was the youngest child of nine brothers and sisters who survived infancy. She was the daughter of Harry Lebowitz (1879-1953), who emigrated to the United States from Russia, circa 1902, and his second wife, Mary Posenitsky (1883-1959), who also emigrated from Russia. Barbara grew up in the family home on Broad Street, on the "West Side" of Glens Falls, near her father's automotive dealership and salvage yard businesses, all of which were located on the site of the present Hannaford Plaza. After graduating from Glens Falls Senior High School, Barbara moved to New York City. After living in Brooklyn, she and her husband, Howard Friedricks, moved to Sea Cliff, Long Island. Barbara is survived by her husband, Howard Friedricks; their three children, Bonnie Friedricks, Susan Friedricks, and David Friedricks; and two grandchildren, Natalie Friedricks and James Friedricks, all of whom cherish her. Before retiring from a career in business, Barbara worked as the product manager of El Mar Knitwear of California, a women's sportswear design and manufacturing company. Barbara, whose Yiddish name was Chipabayla, was the last of her generation of Lebowitzes. She was predeceased by the following siblings: Sarah Lebowitz Kass, Ceclia Lebowitz Palhowitz, I. Charles "Itchy" Lebowitz, Harold "Labe" Lebowitz, Maurice "Maish" Lebowitz, Philip Lebowitz, Judith "Yetta" Duberstein, and Jack "Yankel" Lebowitz. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, May 5, at 1 p.m., at Sullivan-Minahan & Potter Funeral Home, 407 Bay Road, Queensbury. Published in the Post-Star on 5/4/2005. Gormely Sr., James F. GANSEVOORT -- James F. Gormely Sr. of Gansevoort, passed away peacefully at Glens Falls Hospital on Monday, May 2, 2005. Born on March 9, 1921, in Brewer, Maine, he was the son of Michael and Theresa (Long) Gormely. He graduated in 1939 from Brewer High School, Maine. Jim was a World War II veteran, serving in the Army in the Philippines, acting as an interpreter for Gen. McArthur with the Japanese. He retired in 1995 from Gormely Associates, after a long career in the paper industry. Jim was a member of TAPPI, PIMA, American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. In his early years, Jim was an amateur boxer, winning 26 fights, 24 by knock-out. He went on to win the Golden Gloves of Northeast four times. He enjoyed traveling, fishing, hunting, gardening and having good times with his many friends and family. Jim was devoted to his wife, Jennie, children and grandchildren. Jim was a faithful member of St. Michael the Archangel Church of South Glens Falls, serving as an usher for a number of years. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers, John and Michael. He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Jennie (Ross) Gormely; his son, James F. Gormely Jr. and his wife, Marilyn, of Columbia, Calif.; his daughter, Anne Bearor and her husband, Gerald, of Fort Ann; four grandchildren: Lisa Ellingson, Jill McCain, Michael Gormely and Kurt Gilman; five great- grandchildren; his sisters, Mary Springer of South Glens Falls and Theresa Myers of Florida; and several nieces and nephews. Hart, Mary (Cafaro) GLENS FALLS -- Mary (Cafaro) Hart, 95, of Glens Falls, passed away Monday, May 2, 2005. She was born July 29, 1909, in Fort Edward, the daughter of the late Angelo and Jane (Bruno) Cafaro. Mary worked for Mc Mullen Levens Shirt Factory, and in her later years Warren Industries. In her younger years she enjoyed crocheting, and made many beautiful things for family and friends. She was a caring person; whenever family or friends needed help she was always there for them. Her husband, Herbert Hart Sr., a son, Robert Hart, and four of her brothers, Ralph, Peter, Anthony, and James Cafaro, died before her. Mary is survived by one son, Herbert Hart Jr. and his wife, Sarah, of Hope Maine; one brother, Theodore Cafaro of Queensbury; one sister, Rose Cafaro of Queensbury; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; along with several nieces and nephews, great- nieces and great-nephews and several cousins. Hewitt, 97, formerly of Latham, died Sunday, May 1, 2005, at Westmount Health Facility, Queensbury, after a long illness. The widow of the late Howard E. McClurg and the late Richard W. Hewitt, she was a resident of Latham for 50 years before moving to Queensbury in 1999. She was born in Cuddebackville, N.Y., and was the daughter of the late James and Margaret Case. Mrs. Hewitt worked as a clerk for the New York State Tax & Finance Department in Albany for 10 years before retiring in 1973. She was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church in Latham. Survivors include a daughter, Joann Jones of Queensbury; a stepdaughter, Diane Denison of New Hartford, N.Y.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Bowen Funeral Home, 97 Old Loudon Road, Latham. Hitchcock, 80, of Garnet Lake Road, passed away Tuesday, May 3, 2005, at the Adirondack Tri-County Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in North Creek following a long illness. Born Dean Ellison Oliver, the son of the late George Oliver and Cora (Rice) Oliver (Ursoy) on Feb. 6, 1925, in Ceres, N.Y., Dean was raised by the Rev.'s Lionel and Josephine (Curtis) Hitchcock in Bakers Mills. He graduated from the North Creek High School in 1943, and entered the U.S. Army-Air Force in August of that year. He served in Amarillo, Texas and was honorably discharged in October of 1945. Dean retired from Barton Mines Corp. in 1980, after 30 years of service. At the time of his retirement he served as an electrician for Barton's. As a young man Dean worked for various loggers, including Red Reynolds and Everett Frulla. Dean was also a skilled carpenter and licensed electrician and worked as an independent contractor both during his employment and after retirement. He passed his skills on to his sons and daughters. He loved being with his family. He was an avid bowler, hunter, and fisherman. Over the years he enjoyed many fishing trips to The Fish Ponds, Kibby Pond, and especially to Siamese Ponds. He taught all of his children to fish and hunt and to enjoy the outdoors. In his younger days Dean played baseball in the local men's summer league and enjoyed skiing, swimming, playing cards, and maple sugaring. In the later years he became a sports fan and liked watching them on TV. He also liked scratching lottery tickets. Dean shared genealogy interests with his children and was able to attend family reunions where he met many new found family members. In February of this year, Dean was given a surprise birthday party by his children. His daughter, Joelene and her musician friends played music and he got to hear his granddaughter, Michelle and grandson, Shawn sing and play. He really had a great time and was able to be with his family and visit with old friends. Besides his parents and foster parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Henry Keith Oliver. Survivors include his wife of 34 years, Charlene (Fuller) Hitchcock of Johnsburg; his children, Terry Hitchcock and his wife, Donna, of East Sandwich, Mass., Deana Baker and her companion, Matt Wood, of Wevertown, Joelene Slater and Gig, of Wevertown, Tracy Bateman of Johnsburg, Randy Hitchcock and his wife, Christine, of Wevertown, Eric Hitchcock of Johnsburg; four grandsons, seven granddaughters, six great-grandchildren; three sisters, Reba Oliver of Barneveld, Francina Smith and her husband, Mark, of Gerry, Betty Broadwell and her husband, Hank, of Oswego; his former wife and friend, Muriel La Pointe of Wevertown; and many special nephews, nieces, and cousins. Born on Aug. 26, 1919, in Erie Pa., she was the daughter of the late Daniel and Leona (Durant) Ronan. She married Donald J. Lemery Sr., in 1937, at St. Alphonsus Church in Glens Falls. Evelyn taught ceramics first at her home in Fort Ann and then at her home in Fort Edward. She was a communicant of St. Mary's/St. Paul's Catholic Church in Hudson Falls Evelyn's involvement with her family was most important to her. She also enjoyed camping at Crown Point, doing crafts, especially ceramics and oil painting. In addition to her parents and her husband, she was predeceased by her sister, Marion Pohl; two grandchildren, Denise Pepin and Michael Boquet Jr.; a great grandson, Clarence Kennison Jr.; and a son-in-law, John Varney Sr. Survivors include her children: Patricia Varney of Fort Edward, Donald J. Lemery Jr. and his wife, Nancy, of Micro, N.C., Kathryn Pepin and her husband, Marcel, of Clayton, N.C., and Marion Boquet and her husband, Michael, of Houma, La.; 17 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren: and several nieces and nephews. Born July 21, 1934, in Granville, she was the daughter of Hazel (VanGuilder) and Earl Louis Winchell. Her husband, James P. Marra, and five brothers and sisters, died before her. Survivors include her six children: James P. Marra Jr., Ethel Jane Jones and her husband, Paul, Robin Horton and her special friend, Donald VanGuilder, all of Granville, Timothy Marra and his wife, Sue, of Bridgeport, Conn., Charles Marra Sr. and his wife, Lynn, and Lee Joy Ferguson and her husband, Chuck, all of Granville; eight grandchildren: James P. Born on Nov. 25, 1916, in Truthville, she was the daughter of the late Clifton and Alice (Huntley) Saladin. She attended Whitehall High School, was a member of the First Baptist Church of Whitehall and a former member of the Whitehall Volunteer Fireman's Auxiliary. Laura was predeceased by her husband, Raymond B. Saladin, who passed away in 2000, and a sister, Helen Denno. She is survived by her three children: Phyllis Smith and her husband, Jack, of Ramsey, N.J., Raymond E. Saladin and his wife, Carole, of Fort Edward and Beverly Wanmer and her husband, David, of Scotia; grandchildren: Susan Van Hovel, Todd Smith, David Saladin and his wife, Kim, Jennifer Saladin Perry, Dan Andrews, Kim Andrews, David C. Saum, 73, of Lake Avenue, passed away Monday, May 2, 2005, at his home, surrounded by his family, following a long battle with cancer. Born Oct. 2, 1931, in Boston, Mass., he was the son of the late Harry and Ada (Towner) Saum. Raised in Natick, Mass., Mr Saum was a graduate of Natick High School. He was an avid musician and played accordion for his school. Following graduation, he began his own band called the Skip Saum Trio. Mr. Saum's enjoyment of flying led him to acquire his pilot's license and his own plane. His family vacationed in Lake George village for many years. In 1954, they purchased Shore Meadows Motel on Lake Avenue, which Mr. Saum owned and operated. He married Patricia Menard on May 25, 1968, in Cochituate, Mass. Besides his parents, Mr. Saum was predeceased by his brother, Robert W. Saum, who died in 1991. Survivors include his wife, Patricia Saum of Lake George; one son, Harry F. Saum III of Lake George and his fiancee, Junina Nacua of Queensbury; his sister-in-law, Filamena Saum of Cortez, Fla.; one aunt, Esther Williams of Sherman Oaks, Calif.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 9, at Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, Mohican Street, Lake George, with the Rev. Bernard R. Turner, pastor, officiating.
