Born on July 17, 1929, in New York City, he was the son of Adolf and Freida (Beck) Bachem. Mr. Bachem grew up in the Bronx and moved to New Jersey where he lived for many years. He was a World War II Army veteran. Mr. Bachem owned and operated several companies as a European food importer. He and his wife, Helga, moved to Queensbury in 1994, because they loved the area. In recent years, Mr. Bachem spent his time running the Homeowner's Association at Westwood. He was also a highly involved member and treasurer of the Lake George Rotary. He always enjoyed the company of his friends and felt that life should be fun. He was fortunate enough to spend many years with his family and friends in the Lake George area, which he loved very much. Survivors include his wife, Lotte Helga (Job) Bachem of Queensbury; two sons, Peter Bachem and his wife, Jacqueline and their two boys, Kyle and Dylan, of Queensbury, and Fred Bachem and his wife, Muisje, of Towanda, Pa., and their children, Jocelyn and Elliott; a granddaughter, Corey; and three great-grandchildren, Dempsey, Grady, and Evelyn. Logo Published in the Post-Star on 5/24/2005. Gilchrest, Esther Brady Shushan -- Esther Brady Gilchrest, 86, died peacefully at her home surrounded by her loving family on Monday, May 23, 2005. She was born April 18, 1919, in Shushan, daughter of the late William and Grace (Conety) Brady. Esther was educated in a one-room school, the Steel Brook District School, and from there she continued her education by commuting daily on the train from Shushan to Salem attending Washington Academy, where she graduated in 1937. During World War II, Esther lived and worked at Mary McClellan Hospital, where she met many lifelong friends. She married Gerald Gilchrest on May 25, 1946. Gerald died Jan. 2, 1994. Esther was a member of the Washington County Republican Committee, a charter member of the Battenkill Home Bureau, a greeter and member of the Shushan Covered Bridge Museum and a longtime member and regular attendee of the Shushan United Methodist Church. She enjoyed doing crafts, gardening and caring and maintaining her home. In her later years, she took pleasure sitting on her front porch. Besides her parents and husband, Esther was predeceased by her stepfather, William Smith and five stepbrothers, William, Roy, Ernest, Charles, and Whitney Smith. Survivors include her children, Judith Wundrock and her husband, Joseph, of Bristol, N.H.; Harold "Butch" Gilchrest and his wife, Denise, and Nancy Kramer, all of Shushan; her grandchildren, Karen Wundrock of Portsmouth, N.H., Jessica Allen and her husband, Travis, of Chelsea, Vt., Ian Gilchrest of Shushan, and her great-grandchild, Simon Allen of Chelsea, Vt. She is also survived by her in-laws, Charles "Pook" and Betty Gilchrist, George and Barbara Gilchrest and Richard Gilchrest, all of Shushan, Mary Lou Gilchrest of Delmar and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 26, at the Shushan United Methodist Church with the Rev. Raoul Waters, pastor, officiating. Interment will be in the Woodlands Cemetery in Cambridge. Friends may call at her life-long home at 217 Juniper Swamp Road, Shushan, from 5 till 8 p.m. on Wednesday. Hall, Dorotha Jane QUEENSBURY -- Dorotha Jane Hall, 80, of Rockhurst, died Sunday, May 22, 2005, at Westmount Health Facility, Queensbury, following a long illness. Born Aug. 16, 1924, in Schenectady, she was the daughter of George W. Sylvester and Edith (Combs) Sylvester. Mrs. Hall was raised in Schenectady and graduated from Mount Pleasant High School. She was a popular local seamstress and also had been employed in area restaurants throughout the years, the last being the Queensbury Country Club. Mrs. Hall was a member of Caldwell Presbyterian Church of Lake George and a member of the church choir. She also had been a captain of the North Queensbury Rescue Squad where she had taught courses in CPR and EMT. Mrs. Hall and her husband, Bill, were avid Red Wings fans and were both EMTs at the games. She was predeceased by her first husband, Alfred Robert Stein, who died in 1969, and by four brothers, Winfield, Norman Richard, and Earl and by two sisters, Elsie and Margaret. Survivors include her husband, William DeLong Hall, of Queensbury; two daughters, Marjorie Ann Brown and her husband, Peter, of Lake Hadlock, and Cynthia Jane Smith and her husband, Richard, of Cleverdale; two sisters, a twin, Doris Gillstrom of Malvern, Pa., and Eleanor Jenkins of Malta; two grandchildren, Sally Rebecca Nelson and her husband, Blair, of Florida, N.Y., and Jason Aaron Gottlieb and his wife, Tricia, of Upper Montclair, N.J.; three great-grandchildren, Madison Kate Nelson, Olivia Kate Gottlieb and Evan Thomas Gottlieb; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 26, 2005, at Caldwell Presbyterian Church, 71 Montcalm St., Lake George with the Rev. Shirley A. Mosholder, pastor, officiating. Herman, Mortimer "Mort" FORT EDWARD -- Mortimer "Mort" Herman, 83, of Bascom Drive, passed away at his home on Sunday, May 22, 2005, surrounded by his friends. Born on Dec. 7, 1921, in Manhattan, New York City, he was the son of the late Frank and Frances (Hirshefelt) Herman. Mort loved spending time with his friends and peers. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Mort's greatest enjoyment was watching trains, cars and trucks. He looked forward to attending program services at the Fort Edward Day Habilitation Center. Survivors include his friends and caretakers at Bascom Drive IRA and the Fort Edward Day Habilitation Center. Graveside services will be conducted at 12 noon on Tuesday, May 24, 2005, at Temple Beth-El Cemetery in the town of Moreau, with Rabbi Richard J. Sobel officiating. McCarty, of Ballston Spa, formerly of Glens Falls, passed away Monday, May 23, 2005, at the home of her daughter. She was 96. Born on Feb. 19, 1909, in Amsterdam, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Michael and Helen (Taylor) Shelly. She was a former member of St. Mary's Church in Glens Falls, and the Legion of Mary. For many years, she visited residents of area nursing homes and at one time worked as a clerk for Shangraw's Pharmacy in Glens Falls. Jean was always involved with the lives and activities of her children and grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Arthur W. McCarty; nine sisters and brothers and one granddaughter, Kristen LaVoy. Survivors include four children and their spouses, Mary Faith and James Drake of Malta, Maureen and Thomas Buckley of Ballston Spa, F. Robert and Jennie McCarty of Augusta, Ga., and David W. and Connie McCarty of Florida, N.Y.; six grand- children, and seven great-grandchildren. Queensbury -- Charles A. Pifer, 80, of Mountain View Lane, Queensbury, passed away Monday morning, May 23, 2005, at Glens Falls Hospital following a long illness. Born Jan. 5, 1925, in Denver, Colo., he was son of the late Fred and Ina (Hatcher) Pifer. He lived most of his life in Miami, Fla., working as a dispatcher for the Miami Police and Fire Departments as well as a manager of the city of Miami Federal Credit Union. He retired from the Girl Scout Council of tropical Florida as Property Manager in 1987. Local employers were Adirondack Pools, and Hometown Apothecary. Some of his many interests were playing golf, playing pool, crossword puzzles and cooking. He married Martha Jo Holleman on July 14, 1945, in Tavernier, Fla. Martha died Oct. 20, 1980. He married Marie Kastner on April 8, 1983, in Miami, Fla. Besides his parents previously mentioned, Charles was predeceased by one sister, Ila Roderick; and three brothers, George, Jack, and Frank Pifer, and his pet cat, Fluffy. Survivors include his wife of 22 years, Marie Kastner-Pifer of Queensbury; one son, Charles Pifer II of Miami Beach, Fla., and one daughter, Linda Deane of Dania, Fla.; three grandchildren; Paul Wooden and his wife, Mindy, of Texas, Janet Gonzales and her husband, Alex, of Miami, and Cindy Elizabeth Wooden-Pryer and her husband, Daniel, of Vermont; seven great-grandchildren, Jacob, Sailor, and Halli Wooden of Texas, Nicholas and Ariel Gonzales of Miami, Caleb Lucier, of Vermont and Joshua Lucier, now serving with the U.S. Marines in Iraq and his wife, Morgan, of Vermont; two great-great-grandsons, Gabriel Lucier, and a boy born May 22, 2005, not yet named; one brother, Harvey Pifer and his wife, Thelma, of Battleground, Wash.; one sister-in-law, Lorena Pifer of Liberal, Kan.; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. North Creek -- Geraldine E. Smith, 89, a longtime resident of North Creek, went to be with her Savior on Monday, May 23, 2005, at the Adirondack Tri-County Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in North Creek. Born Oct. 23, 1915, in Brooklyn, she was the daughter of Martin and Edith (Maides) Blazy. Geraldine was a longtime beautician in North Creek before retiring in 1970. She was a member of the North Creek Baptist Church and a past member of the American Legion Auxiliary. Geraldine enjoyed reading, caring for her grandchildren and spending time with her family. She was predeceased by her husband, Robert J. Smith Jr., who passed away on March 26, 1961. Her brother, Nicholas Blazy, also died before her. Survivors include her children, Robert J. Smith Jr. and his wife, Marilyn, of North Creek, William N. Smith and his wife, Marcia, of Gloversville, Margaret E. Lanphear and her husband, Larry of Minerva, Suzanne E. Phelps and her husband, Douglas, of Springfield, Mass., Thomas G. Smith and his wife, Vickie, of North Creek; sister, Irma PreGenzer of Weirsdale, Fla.; brother, Martin J. Blazy and his wife, Doris, of Oklahoma City, Okla; 14 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. A memorial service to celebrate Geraldine's life will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, June 4, 2005, at the North Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Trudy Pettibone, pastor, officiating. Joan had been a resident of Las Vegas, Nev., for six years. She and her family had been residents of New York, New Jersey, Virginia and Florida in her 56 years of marriage. Joan is survived by her husband, Al; son, Bradley; daughter-in-law, Susan; a sister, Ann Cartwright of New Jersey; four grandchildren, Bradley, Christopher, Samantha and Paul, as well as many cousins, nephews and nieces. Services were held at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, May 19, in Las Vegas. A tribute to Joan followed at the home of her son, Brad.
