BURLINGTON, Vt. -- Jessie K. Ashley, 80, died on Wednesday, May 18, 2005, at her home with her husband Eugene at her bedside. She died of breast cancer which had metastasized after an interval of several years. She was born in Bolton Landing, on Sept. 7, 1924, to Henry C. and Mabel (Finkle) Knoblauch. The family moved to Glens Falls, where she grew up and attended school. She graduated from Glens Falls High School in 1942. She furthered her education at Maryland College for Women, receiving her B.S. degree in 1947. In the summer of 1946, Jessie renewed acquaintance with Eugene Ashley as he returned from the service during World War II. They were married on Jan. 31, 1948, while he was finishing his college education. The couple moved from married students' temporary housing at MIT to Buffalo, N.Y., for three years before settling in Burlington, Vt., where they have remained since 1953. Except for a short time working at Lever House in Cambridge, Mass., when Gene was still in school, Jessie was a homemaker all her married life. She filled the role of wife and mother to perfection. Her family thrived. Her home became a center for neighborhood activity while her children were growing up. Jessie and Gene traveled to visit family after their boys had grown and left for lives of their own. There were visits to California, Washington, D.C., and other places to see new babies, graduations, and so forth. A memorable trip was made to France to visit Gene's brother's grave in the American Military Cemetery at Epinal. It was an emotional day which Jessie and Gene always remembered. As her health failed, Jessie's life slowed. But the traits which characterized her never diminished: a sparkle in her blue eyes, interest in people, love of family, love of life. She was a member of the Unitarian-Universalist Church of Burlington. She is survived by her husband, Eugene Ashley of Burlington, Vt.; her sons, Peter Ashley, his wife, Susan, and their son, Ethan, of Berkley, Calif.; Christopher Ashley and his wife, Rebecca, of Hermosa Beach, Calif.; Richard Ashley and his wife, Elizabeth, and their daughter, Lauren, of Arlington,Va.; a stepson, Eugene Ashley II and his wife, Jayne, of Lymington, England, their son, Charles, of Bangkok, Thialand, Eugene II"s son, Eugene Ashley III, and his family, of Fremont, Calif., and his daughter, Katherine Gaddis and her family, of Evergreen, Colo.; four great-grandchildren; a former daughter-in-law, Aileen Ashley; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by three brothers, Charles, Henry and George. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, June 26, 2005, at 2 p.m. in the Unitarian-Universalist Church in Burlington, with interment of her cremated remains to follow in the church Memorial Garden. In Jessie's memory, donations may be sent to Hospice of the Champlain Valley, c/o The Visiting Nurse Association, 1110 Prim Road, Colchester, VT 05446 or FAHC, Hematology/Oncology Division, UHC Campus, 1 S.
